PRELUDE The Little Shepherd –C. Debussy

INTROIT HallelujahS. Nutting/K. Longaker
Every time I feel this way, this old familiar sinking,
I will lay my troubles down by the water
where the river will never run dry.

Hallelujah, I'm gonna let myself be lifted by and by.
I will lay my troubles down by the water
where the river will never run dry.

It's been said and I do believe: As you ask, so shall you receive.
So take from me these troubles, bring me sweet release
where the river will never run dry.

Hallelujah, I'm gonna let myself be lifted by and by.
I will lay my troubles down by the water
where the river will never run dry.

There is a river in this heart of hearts with a knowingness of my highest good.
I am willing, I will do my part, where the river will never run dry.

CALL TO WORSHIP responsively  Psalms 34:4-6; 27:1; 46:1,11
L: I sought the Lord, who answered me, and delivered me from my fears.
P: This poor soul cried out; God heard me, and saved me from my troubles.
L: The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?
P: The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of what shall I be afraid?
L: The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit.
P: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
L: Let us worship God!
All: The God of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

GATHERING HYMN How Firm a Foundation
How firm a foundation, you saints of the Lord,
is laid for your faith in God’s excellent word!
What more can God say than to you has been said,
to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

“Fear not, I am with you, oh be not dismayed,
for I am your God, and will still give you aid.
I’ll strengthen you, help you, and cause you to stand,
upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.”

“When through the deep waters I call you to go,
the rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
for I will be with you, your troubles to bless,
and sanctify to you the deepest distress.”

“The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to its foes;
that soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no never, no never forsake!”

PRAYER OF THE DAY in unison
God our refuge, speak peace to our hearts. In the storms and troubles of life,
calm our fears, strengthen our faith, that we may know your presence with us.
By your Spirit guide us; by your wisdom teach us; and by your hand protect us,
that we may rejoice in your goodness and serve you always. Amen.

PEACE OF THE CHURCH

RESPONSE When Peace Like a River
When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
when sorrows like sea billows roll,
whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,
“It is well, it is well with my soul.”
It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well with my soul.

Though evil should tempt me, though trials should come,
let this blest assurance control:
that Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
and has shed his own blood for my soul.
It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well with my soul.

Lord, hasten the day when our faith shall be sight,
the clouds be rolled back as a scroll,
the trumpet shall sound and the Lord shall descend;
even so, it is well with my soul.
It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well with my soul.

ANTHEM You Are Mine –D. Haas
I will come to you in the silence, I will lift you from all your fear;
you will hear My voice; I claim you as My choice.
Be still, and know I am near.

I am hope for all who are hopeless, I am eyes for all who long to see.
In the shadows of the night, I will be your light.
Come and rest in Me.

Do not be afraid, I am with you, I have called you each by name.
Come and follow Me, I will bring you home;
I love you and you are mine.

I am strength for all the despairing, healing for the ones who dwell in shame.
All the blind will see, the lame will all run free,
and all will know My name.

Do not be afraid, I am with you, I have called you each by name.
Come and follow Me, I will bring you home;
I love you and you are mine.

I am the Word that leads all to freedom, I am the peace the world cannot give.
I will call your name, embracing all your pain.
Stand up, now, walk, and live.

Do not be afraid, I am with you, I have called you each by name.
Come and follow Me, I will bring you home;
I love you and you are mine.

MESSAGE “From Fear to Trust”

MUSICAL REFLECTION

SENDING HYMN Lord of All Hopefulness
Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,
whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy:
be there at our waking, and give us, we pray,
your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.

Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,
whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe:
be there at our labors, and give us, we pray,
your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.

Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,
your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace:
be there at our homing, and give us, we pray,
your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.

Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,
whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm:
be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray,
your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.

Meet the Rev. Dr. Lynne Kramer
During worship this Sunday we are delighted to introduce to you Rev. Dr. Lynne Kramer. This summer Rev. Kramer will be serving FCC part-time by assisting us in worship, preaching, weddings, and other pastoral needs.

For the past twenty-seven years Lynne has served churches in the Greenwich, CT, area as an Associate Minister, Preacher, and Retreat Facilitator. Most of her ministry has been at Round Hill Community Church and Second Congregational Church in Greenwich.

Lynne is a graduate of Chatham College (B.A.), Yale Divinity School (M.Div.), and Hartford Seminary (D.Min.). For her Doctor of Ministry project and thesis at Hartford Seminary she developed a Divorce Recovery Workshop program. During her time with us at FCC this year we plan to offer that workshop for our church and community with Lynne as the facilitator. Prior to her call to ministry and ordination in 1993, Lynne enjoyed a successful career in publishing, news media, and marketing.

Lynne is a delightful person, a wonderful preacher, and compassionate pastor. We look forward to getting to know her and to sharing the joy of her ministry among us.
Maundy Thursday
Maundy Thursday Communion Service
April 1, 5:30 pm
Mark your calendar! The evening of Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday), we will have a special service in which we’ll celebrate Communion as we remember Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples. During the service we’ll also reflect on the meaning of Jesus’ death on the Cross on "Good Friday.” Please join us for this quiet service as we focus on Jesus’ new commandment to “love one another” and his suffering and death. As we do so, we prepare our hearts for the joy and celebration of Easter.
The Season of Lent
Tomorrow is the Fifth Sunday in Lent.

The season of Lent began this year on Ash Wednesday, February 17. The word “Lent” is from an Old English word lencten meaning “spring.” The word may also be related to the word for “lengthen,” referring to the lengthening of the days during the season of spring.

Lent is traditionally observed for forty days (excluding Sundays) between Ash Wednesday and Easter. The forty days commemorate the forty days Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness before beginning his public ministry.

Lent is a time of reflection, self-examination, prayer, and renewal as we focus on Jesus’ journey to the Cross and what it means for us as followers of Jesus. The Lenten journey ends in the celebration and joy of Easter.
