Call to Worship
Psalm 113

Praise the LORD! Praise, O servants of the LORD; praise the name of the LORD.
Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time on and forevermore.
From the rising of the sun to its setting the name of the LORD is to be praised.
The LORD is high above all nations, and His glory above the heavens.
Who is like the LORD our God, who is seated on high,
who looks far down on the heavens and the earth?
He raises the poor from the dust, and lifts the needy from the ash heap,
to make them sit with princes, with the princes of His people.
He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children.
Praise the LORD!

This is the Word of the Lord.
"Thanks be to God!"

Opening Hymn

Reflection and Prayer

“Without Pentecost the Christ-event - the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus - remains imprisoned in history as something to remember, think about and reflect on. The Spirit of Jesus comes to dwell within us, so that we can become living Christs here and now.”

Henri Nouwen (1932-1996)

Sermon, Part I
Holy Spirit Holes

Reading of the New Testament
Acts 2:1-8 ( NRSV )

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language?"

This is the Word of the Lord.
"Thanks be to God!"

Pastoral Prayer

Almighty God,
Lord of life, hope, and joy,
We come this morning asking You to breathe your Spirit on us.
Enable us to feel the strength and power
of Your breath and the potential that is within us.
Throw open the windows of our lives and let the breeze
of Your Spirit rush in and overcome our stale thinking,
so that we can have new hopes, new dreams, and new possibilities.

Remove the blinders from our eyes that keep us from seeing
those around us who have needs, sorrows,
those who ache, who are hungry, tired, weary,
frustrated, disillusioned, depressed, and hopeless.

O Lord, we pray that You would breathe within us the breath of Your joy.
Well up within us that living water that comes from Jesus Christ.

We also pray that You might free us from the shackles that bind us to the past.
Free us from our bad habits and broken dreams.
And open our eyes this day to what we can become through Christ,
who lived among us, showed us the way to eternal life, and taught us to pray, saying…

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done
On earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.
Amen.

Prayer Response
with Mr. Jonathan Moody, Violinist

Be Still
by David Kauffman; Text based on Psalm 46; This arrangement by William Gokelman

Be still my love, know that I am God.

The mountains shake, the waters roar, the valleys tremble with fear;
And yet our strength, our refuge sure, whispers in our ear.

Though nations fight, though kingdoms fall, though spiteful hearts will harm;
Your mercy holds us, we hear Your call, we linger in your resting arms.

Behold the works our Lord has done, to change these hearts of stone.
God breaks our arrows, God breaks our bows, God calls us chosen, calls us God's own.

Be still my love, know that I am God.

Reflection and Praise

“It may be that the Day of Judgment will dawn tomorrow. In that case, we will gladly stop working toward a better future. But not before.”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945)

Sermon Part II
Different Spiritual Gifts, One Lord

Reading of the New Testament
I Corinthians 12:4-7 ( NRSV )

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

Offertory Hymn

Giving Back to God

Offertory Prayer

Almighty and Holy God,
You gave the church the abiding presence of Your Holy Spirit.
We beseech You, look upon Your church today and hear our prayers.
Grant that all people, gathered and directed by Your Holy Spirit,
May confess Christ as Lord
And that we as Your church
May combine our diverse gifts with a singular passion
To continue Christ’s mission in this world
Until the day we join in your eternal praise.
We ask these things in the name of Christ Jesus, our Lord,
In whom all things are created,
The One whom we praise and adore,
Amen.

Offertory Statement

We remember that all we have is God's.
As an act of worship, it is with joyful hearts and out of an abundance of riches that we return to God a portion of that with which He has blessed us.

Although we are not meeting together in the Temple,
the church's operating expenses continue.

Give cheerfully, thanking God for His blessings of light and life.

During the Offertory, devote yourself to God
in heart and in mind and in spirit.

Flee as a Bird
by Mary Dana Shindler
Hymn 459 in the Broadman Hymnal

Reflection and Commitment

“Pentecost is the wholehearted expression of the almost unlimited imagination of God.”

John Macintyre (1916-2005)

Sermon, Part III
The Unlimited Imagination of God

Reading of the New Testament
I Corinthians 12:8-11 ( NRSV )

To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.

This is the Word of the Lord.
"Thanks be to God!"

Hymn of Commitment
Verses 1, 2, & 5

Dismissed to Spirit-Filled Lives of Service

Benediction

Now may the Lord bless you and keep you
and make His face to shine upon you,
and grant you peace.

May the Lord give you the grace to never sell yourself short.
May the Lord give you the grace to risk something big for something good.
May the Lord give you the grace to remember
that this world is now dangerous for anything but truth,
and too small for anything but love.

Now may He take your minds and think through them,
may He take your lips and speak through them,
and may He take your hearts and set them on fire,
in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
