We are experiencing an outbreak of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease in our school. We have been in touch with the Saint Joseph County Health Department, and we will keep you apprised of any updated information they may feel you should have. During this period, we kindly request that you maintain a heightened level of suspicion for this illness, given its growing prevalence in our school.
Although there are several illnesses going around our community, this one in particular is highly contagious. It is usually mild and self-limiting, it can cause severe disease in certain individuals. If your child has any of the symptoms consistent with Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease, please keep your child home from school and notify the front office. Symptoms include fever and flu-like symptoms, mouth sores and skin rash. The first week is the most contagious, so we ask that you keep your child home for the first three days, or longer if the child seems uncomfortable or there are persistent open blisters or nasal/oral secretions. Frequent hand washing is key to preventing spread; we are encouraging good hygiene as well as sanitizing surfaces as often as possible. If you have any questions, please call the Health Office at (574) 272-4935. For more information on Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease click HERE.
