PRINCIPAL'S UPDATE

On Friday the Superintendent of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, David Maugel, stopped by SPX for a brief and unannounced visit. I got the chance to give him a small tour of our school, and he was able to observe middle school recess and meet several of our 1st graders in the hallway. Mr. Maugel oversees over 13,000 students in 43 different Catholic schools, so it was greatly appreciated that he would take time out of his busy schedule to stop in and visit us.

In Christ,

Chris Milliron

SPOTTING GOSPEL VALUES

The Catholic faith is an integral part of our daily curriculum. We emphasize Gospel values such as respect, honesty, responsibility, compassion, and teamwork for all students. We have started a weekly drawing where classes displaying these values are "caught being good" and win a free dress day on the following Monday.

This week Mrs. Thomason spotted Mr. Parrish's class showing the gospel value of respect. They were quiet and respectful during mass, especially during communion when both Mr. Parrish and Sister Marie were Eucharistic Ministers. Congrats to Mr. Parrish's class for earning a dress down day!

NOTE FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE

We are experiencing an outbreak of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease in our school. We have been in touch with the Saint Joseph County Health Department, and we will keep you apprised of any updated information they may feel you should have. During this period, we kindly request that you maintain a heightened level of suspicion for this illness, given its growing prevalence in our school.

Although there are several illnesses going around our community, this one in particular is highly contagious. It is usually mild and self-limiting, it can cause severe disease in certain individuals. If your child has any of the symptoms consistent with Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease, please keep your child home from school and notify the front office. Symptoms include fever and flu-like symptoms, mouth sores and skin rash. The first week is the most contagious, so we ask that you keep your child home for the first three days, or longer if the child seems uncomfortable or there are persistent open blisters or nasal/oral secretions. Frequent hand washing is key to preventing spread; we are encouraging good hygiene as well as sanitizing surfaces as often as possible. If you have any questions, please call the Health Office at (574) 272-4935. For more information on Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease click HERE.
