Hello everyone!
With Veterans Day coming up in less than 2 months in the US, I thought it might be a nice idea to write to some veterans in a nursing home. A co-worker’s husband has been in a VA home for nearly 5 years due to something they can’t seem to diagnose. They’re both in their 40s, and she has only seen him twice in the last 18 months. I had originally thought of writing letters to him, be he really wants us to write a letter to each of the veterans. There are 228 vets in the home, but only 2 are women. They are all English speakers.
Here’s what I plan to write:
Happy Veteran's Day my friend!
The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. What had been Armistice Day, signifying the end of WWI, became Veteran's Day on June 1, 1954. Unfortunately, the “war to end all wars” apparently doesn't exist, and President Eisenhower rightfully decided to recognize the soldier rather than the battle.
“We recognize and celebrate the heroes all of our veterans, we shall forever be grateful. You inspire and encourage us, your unselfishness, your courage, and your willingness to protect our freedom – no words can express our thanks.” Kate Summers
To paraphrase John Quincy Adams, your actions have inspired others to dream more, to learn more, to do more and to become more.” Thank you for your service!
I'm honored to be your fellow citizen,
There are so many inspirational quotes for vets online. Here’s a sampling:
“The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.” G.K. Chesterton
“Heroism doesn’t always happen in a burst of glory. Sometimes small triumphs and large hearts change the course of history.”Mary Roach
“This country has not seen and probably will never know the true level of sacrifice of our veterans. As a civilian, I owe an unpayable debt to all our military. Thomas M. Smith
Please don’t limit yourself to these, though. There are so many wonderful quotes about our vets. There are also a lot of jokes, too, but some made me blush (and that takes a lot).
Thanks to all who participate!
