Issue 29
April 8, 2018
Dear LaGuardia Families,
Welcome back! Whether you were here in the semi-wintry Northeast, or somewhere that actually felt like spring, we hope you all are rested, refreshed, recharged and ready for the final march to the finish line!

We'll ease you all back into the swing of things with a nice easy pace-just a few quick announcements and reminders for this week.

Please join us for our PA meeting at 6:00 p.m this Tuesday, April 10, with the studio meetings immediately following at 7:00 p.m. We've got lots of exciting and important information to share.
We hope you have seen Dr. Mars's announcement that the All School Musical next fall is The Sound of Music! Since we've been anxiously awaiting this news and know many kids eager to prepare, we're sharing her note with the information about auditions here: "Students can go to for the breakdown of some of the characters, songs and scenes. Audition dates will be posted upon our return from spring break."

Some other exciting news is that the lucky winners of the Annual Benefit raffles have been drawn! Please scroll down to see who won tickets to each show! Thanks to all who participated.

Please note that the makeup date for the PSAT and SAT test day is April 24. The freshmen field trip to the American Museum of Natural History and the senior trip to the World Trade Center Observatory are also rescheduled for that day. Students will need to submit a new permission form for this new date, as the previous form is now void. You can download it here (pages 11-13). Once again, we're going to need chaperones for these field trips, so please sign up to help!

Don't forget to check out May's AP exam schedule, which is posted on page 14 of the Weekly Bulletin. Kaplan Test Prep is offering some free AP test preparation links, which you can find by scrolling down. The schedule for the June Regents exams is also provided in the Weekly Bulletin.

Our online auction crew is still busily gathering up goodies to put on the bidding block, so please, DON'T BE SHY! ASK FOR DONATIONS. We still need theater tickets restaurant gift cards, weekend hotel stays and spa experiences. Anything goes! Be creative.  You know what sells.  So once again, please ask. Believe it or not, people are very willing to give to our amazing children and school.  You can go to our auction web page  for a copy of our donation form and a list of ideas for donations.  Please email any questions or suggestions to Heather MacAllister at

Finally, since you've spent a week away from the LaGuardia galleries and theater stages, we have just the remedy for your melancholic heart. The amazing Symphonic Band & New Music Ensemble Concert is this Friday night.  The Symphonic Band is so good it brings us to tears. But for those of you who don't know about New Music, let us quickly fill you in: the 30 or so vocal and instrumental students in this class compose the music and lyrics, then orchestrate and recruit band members to perform the songs. The styles of music range from singer/songwriter to rock to funk and everything in between and their work never fails to astonish us.

But that's not all! The calendar of upcoming events is full with great things, so load up some tickets to the many concerts and to SDF#2
August: Osage County at the La! box office.

We look forward to seeing you at the PA meetings on Tuesday night.

4 Projects Completed!
2 New Projects to Go!
WOW! Three LaGuardia classroom projects benefited when Ripple, a virtual currency company, flash-funded every project on DonorsChoose on March 28th---for a site-wide total of $29 million!
Three LaGuardia projects benefited:
  • Ms. Harisiadis's English classroom got a new computer
  • Ms. Contreras's Yoga students got new stress-reduction workbooks
  • Mr. Rahman and the Math/Science department got some new classroom laptops!
Over the break, the 'Ripple effect' continued when donors outside the LaGuardia community banded together to complete the funding for a newly posted request for a computer for Ms. Barile's Living Environment/Bio and AP Environmental Science classroom.

Verizon also provided generous support for Mr. Rahman and Ms. Barile's projects.

That makes 44 funded LaGuardia classroom projects this school year. Let's keep it rippling to 45!
Document Camera Needed for Ms. Barile's Living Environment/Bio Classes
Matching Offer from Verizon Will DOUBLE Donations

Ms. Barile needs an Elmo document camera to bring enhanced life to the often-microscopic world of Living Environment/Biology We expect this request to receive the same Verizon grant that benefited LaGuardia classrooms 2x so far, once the project page is officially 'live'. It's in 'pre-funding' now, to enable people to get a head start on giving. The grant will allow the $1,093 project to be completed for half price: only $547 in individual donations.
To donate:

Mr. Hold's New Bio Project Is 65% Funded So Far!

Mr. Hold has a newly posted project that already is 65% funded by 9 donors.

His Living Environment/Bio students need a Gel Electrophoresis lab. He says: "The Gel Electrophoresis couldn't be more important in terms of engaging students and getting them on board with understanding the relationship between biodiversity (and why it's essential) and understanding how scientists measure it."

DonorsChoose is a nonprofit organization that allows private individuals to donate to public school classroom projects. LaGuardia teachers post many project requests on DonorsChoose throughout the school year for one simple reason: the NYC Department of Education does not provide many of the materials, technology and other essentials that make LaGuardia great.

In the past three years, 100% of our faculty's requests have been funded by parents and other generous supporters.

DonorsChoose donations are eligible for most employers' matching gift programs.
The American Museum of Natural History is offering a series of information sessions and workshops focused on making informed choices about preparing for, applying to and paying for college, and learning to manage your own money in the process. Online pre-registration is requested, and links to register will be available approximately one month before each information session.

We're entering the home stretch for AP students, and as exam dates are approaching, we know that many students are clamoring for additional review resources to help support their studies.
Kaplan can help with a suite of all new study books, designed to help students study efficiently and effectively. Their study books were designed with the feedback of AP teachers across the country and the great news is that they have Kindle editions for AP World History, US History, Calculus AB, and Biology available for free on Amazon from now until the test dates!

Students can download the free books at the following links:
Students can also enter to win a print copy of any of these books through Kaplan's Free Book Friday sweepstakes.
Students can enter the contest at Winners are selected on Friday, March 23rd, and Friday March 30th!
