Dear LaGuardia Families,

Welcome back! We know reentry can be rough after a break, so we'll try to ease everyone back into the school/work schedule by reminding you of some great upcoming shows.
  • The Broadway Singalong II "Raise Your Voice to Raise Some Funds!" is next Monday, March 5! Please join us for a full night of fun events: our students singing along with Broadway stars, a swinging jazz band, an art exhibit and a human sculpture garden in the lobby along with a chance to buy raffles tickets to Broadway shows. We'll cap off the evening with delicious cocktails and food at the adults-only after party across the street at the NYPL for the Performing Arts. Lab Supplies for Mr. Hold's Science Classes
Mr. Hold's AP Environmental Science and Living Environment students need supplies that will help them see what's going on in their lab: a document camera, color printer ink for their worksheets (which in Science classes makes a HUGE difference), and safety glasses.

The Mindfulness Project from Ms. Contreras -- 23 Donors so Far!
Ms. Contreras' Yoga students need 250 copies of the Mindfulness Project's I Am Here Now: A Creative Mindfulness Guide and Journal 

DonorsChoose is a nonprofit organization that allows private individuals to donate to public school classroom projects. LaGuardia teachers post many project requests on DonorsChoose throughout the school year for one simple reason: the NYC Department of Education does not provide many of the materials, technology and other essentials that make LaGuardia great.

In the past three years, 100% of our faculty's requests have been funded by parents and other generous supporters.

DonorsChoose donations are eligible for most employers' matching gift programs.
    If you are a NYC youth between the ages of 14-24 who is looking for valuable work experience and earning money this summer, please complete the SYEP application and take the first step to landing your dream summer job. 

Computer Science for Cyber Security (CS4CS) Summer Program for High School Women

Computer Science for Cyber Security (CS4CS) is a FREE, three-week, full-day summer program providing an introduction for high school women on the fundamentals of cyber security and computer science at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. No background or experience in cyber security or computer programming is needed in order to apply, only your interest and enthusiasm. The program is led by members of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Offensive Security, Incident Response and Internet Security (OSIRIS) Laboratory. We are excited to announce that this year's CS4CS program will be supported by  The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC). 
We are looking for young women who are rising 9th through 12th grade students (entering these grades in September 2018) who live within daily commuting distance to NYU Tandon School of Engineering, 6 MetroTech Center, Brooklyn NY, 11201. The program meets Monday-Friday for three weeks starting July 9th, 2018.

Applied Research Innovations in Science and Engineering
The Academic Forum has shared with us this great summer learning opportunity:

The  Center for K12 STEM Education at  NYU Tandon School of Engineering  is accepting applications for our sixth cohort of NYC high school students to participate in  Applied Research Innovations in Science and Engineering ( ARISE ), a free summer research program in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) disciplines. Selected students will conduct authentic research while being mentored by a graduate student and/or faculty member in one of more than 24 active labs on NYU's campus, investigating a range of scientific, interdisciplinary questions in engineering, computer/data science and life sciences. In addition, ARISE students are taught public speaking skills, complete a presentation on their work, and learn about the history and ethics of science and research. Some of the previous 175 ARISE participants have continued their research into the school year, co-authored scientific papers, attended professional conferences, or entered science competitions based on their work. All have gained critical new academic and professional skills.

We are looking for:
  • New York City residents who are completing 10th or 11th grade in June 2018.
  • Academically prepared, highly motivated students.
  • Applicants with a passion for science, technology, engineering or math.
  • Students that will attend the program, full time, from July 2, 2018 to August 17, 2018.
  • Students that can make and fulfill commitments, and show timeliness and persistence.

DYCD's   Ladders for Leaders  is a nationally recognized program that offers high school and college students the opportunity to participate in paid professional summer internships with leading corporations, non-profit organizations and government agencies in New York City. Ladders for Leaders gives students a unique opportunity to explore their interests and discover new ones through:
  • Pre-employment Training: Receive help with résumé and cover letter writing, and interviewing skills. Learn essential workplace readiness skills and business etiquette
  • Paid Summer Internships: Paid internship opportunities available in a variety of industries to accommodate student interests
  • Opportunity to join a growing Alumni Network: Broad network of alumni, post-internship opportunities and networking events open only to past participants of the program.
  • The deadline to apply to Ladders for Leaders is March 17th, 2018

Juniors: All About Me survey is now open on Naviance.

Seniors: College application deadlines are imminent. Make sure to visit the web sites of each university you're applying to and check for their admissions requirements and advice.

Here's some helpful information from Tulane's admissions office on the subject of application materials:
FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION:   Stop by your guidance counselor's office to get a free FAFSA guide!  The "How to Guide" helps you navigate the FAFSA application.  It explains how to complete the form, what questions will be asked and why the information asked is necessary.

Seniors! This is a critical time in your application process and there's lots of information to keep track off. Click to read these important reminders from the Guidance Department

Senior and Junior Parents , to learn more about Naviance and how your child should be utilizing it right now, refer to this issue of the Weekly Bulletin , on page 13.  If you have not signed up, you will be at a major disadvantage in terms of getting updates, newsletters, recommendations and other help from the guidance department. Naviance is a crucial tool to your child's college application success.

The American Museum of Natural History is offering a series of information sessions and workshops focused on making informed choices about preparing for, applying to and paying for college, and learning to manage your own money in the process. Online pre-registration is requested, and links to register will be available approximately one month before each information session.
