Issue 37
June 3, 2018
Dear LaGuardia Families,

Once again, we find ourselves gobsmacked and speechless after attending a weekend of awe-inspiring LaGuardia shows. A Little Night Music (SDF#3) was absolutely gorgeous and the set design was perfectly superb. And the Graduation Dance Concert was equally exquisite and artistic. We're so proud of all of these talented kids! Congrats to all of the performers,  the amazing tech team, and their tirelessly dedicated musicians, designers, directors, choreographers and teachers. Check the "Bonus Tracks" at the bottom for some photos.

Some quick reminders for the upcoming week: Our final studio and PA meetings of the academic year are this Monday, June 4. Studio meetings are at 6:00 p.m and the general PA meeting follows at 7:00 p.m. Please join us and vote and elect members to the PA executive board, School Leadership Team, the Academic Forum panel and representatives for all studios. This is also a great chance to get some deals on LaG totes, tees and sweats, because all of the studios will be selling merchandise before their meetings.

The final shows of the academic year are also this week. The students have been working hard for these and again, the quality rivals anything else you'd see in the city. The Art Studio is hosting an opening reception for the Semi-Annual Art Show on June 8 at 4:00 p.m. and will feature work from students in all grades and art classes. And don't stray too far from school, because the Semi-Annual LaGuardia Symphony & Chorus Concert is later that evening at 7:30 p.m. The musicians perform again on June 9 at 7:30 p.m. You can get  tickets here .

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Linda Hahn and Kat Ramirez
PA Co-Presidents

One New Matching Grant
The school year is winding down, but w e've got 4 more projects yet to fund on DonorsChoose. The LaGuardia administration has not yet received a school budget for 2018-2019, but our teachers need to plan for the fall semester.

Teachers turn to DonorsChoose with greater and greater frequency, as there's been no budget for the technology upgrades or professional development they need most.

The LaGuardia community has been utterly amazing this year in its ongoing support of our teachers' DonorsChoose requests, as, after all, teachers do know best which tools they need most to provide the best classroom experience for our students.

Let's help them get ready for next year and fund these 4 projects! Any amount helps! Thank you!

54 Projects Funded This Year...and Counting!

DonorsChoose is a nonprofit organization that allows private individuals to donate to public school classroom projects. LaGuardia teachers post many project requests on DonorsChoose throughout the school year for one simple reason: the NYC Department of Education does not provide many of the materials, technology and other essentials that make LaGuardia great.

In the past three years, 100% of our faculty's requests have been funded by parents and other generous supporters.

DonorsChoose donations are eligible for most employers' matching gift programs.

APPLICATIONS DUE: Tuesday, May 29 2018
COURSES RUN: July 10--August 16

In the Making provides free six-week art courses that focus on ideas in modern and contemporary art through an investigation of various art-making techniques. Teens have the opportunity to discuss artwork in MoMA's Collection, meet with practicing artists and curators, collaborate with other NYC teens on studio activities, and create self-directed works of art. Courses run from July 10 through August 17 and the season culminates with a teen art show, held at MoMA, made up of all participants' final projects.

The experience will offer students a preview into what college life at a premier public university is all about.
There are many reasons your students should apply. Opportunities include:

  • living in Binghamton's modern residential halls.
  • meeting other talented high-school students.

  • learning about the college admission process.
Although the deadline to submit an application was May 1, we were notified that applications are still open. We hope you'll encourage your child to spend some of their summer learning with this opportunity.
Here are some lovely photos of the Graduation Dance Concert, followed by some shots of A Little Night Music (SDF#3).  Each of these performances was exquisite beyond words.
