UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY
On November 10th, The United States Marine Corps Birthday commemorates the establishment of the Continental Marines.
The United States Marine Corps, a branch of the United States Armed Forces, is responsible for providing power protection from the sea. They use the mobility of the United States Navy to deliver combined-arms task forces rapidly. The Continental Congress first established the Continental Marines on November 10, 1775, leading up to the American Revolution. Two battalions of Marines fought for independence both on land and at sea.
The birth of the U.S. Marine Corps began as a way to augment naval forces in the Revolutionary War.
The recruiting headquarters was in the Tun Tavern on Water Street in Philadelphia, which is considered to be the birthplace of the Marines.
The Corps was abolished at the end of the Revolutionary War. However, on July 11, 1798, Congress ordered the creation of the Corps. Congress named it the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and directed that it be available for service under the Secretary of the Navy.
Marine Corps Presence
The USMC shares many resources with the other branches of the United States military. However, the Corps has sought to maintain its own identity with regards to mission, funding, and assets while utilizing the support available from the larger military branches. Despite having fewer installations than other branches, the Marine Corps maintains a presence on many Army posts, Naval stations, and Air Force bases.
In his birthday greeting more than 70 years ago, General Alexander Vandegrift, our 18th Commandant noted that “A birthday is a fitting time to peer backward – and forward.” That year, Marines reflected on an extraordinary year in combat during their amphibious drive across the Pacific. Despite the challenges and the horrific conditions, Marines prevailed at Guam, Saipan, and Peleliu. On 10 November 1944, Marines looked back with pride on their accomplishment – confident in their ability to meet future challenges.
In 2004, 20,000 Marines deployed to Al Anbar Province, Iraq – many Marines celebrated the birthday in places like Fallujah, Ramadi, and Al Qaim while decisively engaged in combat. That year, Marines also responded to the crisis in the Pacific following a tsunami claiming the lives of more than 200,000 people. On 10 November 2004, Marines looked back with pride on their accomplishments – confident in their ability to meet future challenges.
Some things change. Marines adapt. Their organization, training, and equipment change to the operating environment. However, some things remain the same. Marines continue to attack challenges with the same courage, commitment, loyalty, self-sacrifice, and adaptability as their predecessors in Peleliu and Fallujah. On 10 November 2014, Marines looked back with pride on our accomplishments- confident in our ability to meet future challenges.

NATIONAL CIVIC PRIDE DAY | November 10
On November 10 we celebrate National Civic Pride Day and inspire everyone to promote the dynamic communities they live in.
Civic pride belongs to the people who are at the heart of the city they live in. It brings communities together and encourages everyone to feel a sense of pride by creating and maintaining a healthy city or town. Today, we want to inspire everyone to get involved in their community and show support by improving the place you live and work.
Why is civic pride important? The importance of civic pride means every community member feels a sense of pride for where they live. The people who live in a community are the same people who help their hometowns become better places to live. Businesses, schools, public service agencies, and community members all contribute to the efforts of making their community thrive. These contribution efforts are called civic pride.
How can I support civic pride? Supporting civic pride is easy to do. In fact, most people participate in civic pride and don't realize it. Participating in civic pride is essential for any community member. It builds trust between members in the community and in office, keeps dialog open about key issues, and creates better relationships between all residents. Civic pride:
- Enables citizens to influence local laws and policies that effect their community.
- Helps promote and learn local values of businesses and residents.
- Supports economic growth.
- Encourages people who are overlooked or underheard to become a part of solutions and ideas.
Community Engagement
Engagement or participating in civic pride is when any member or groups of members engage in public concerns, issues, or activities. When community members work together to protect the public interests and improve the standard of living within their community, the values of civic pride are taking place. Addressing and promoting concerns and ideas increases the quality of life for every member of a community.
Support for civic pride is needed in every city and town to encourage fair democracy. The importance of having representation for all demographic backgrounds is essential. Oftentimes, minority groups feel underrepresented in communities because many are unaware of the benefits of civil engagement. Good civic engagement encourages everyone in their community to become a part of civic pride. It also means providing opportunities in neighborhoods to engage in civic pride.
Symbolism of Civic Pride
Many towns and cities across the world have their own symbol of civic pride. Normally, the symbolism is in the form of a landmark, such as a statue, monument or special marker. In fact, you can find most of these items in the middle of the town, such as a center or town square.
The United States has amazing places to visit and explore. You can find the real meaning behind civic pride when you realize how communities work together to provide visitors an unforgettable experience.

Gayle Benson to break ground on 37,000-square-foot Porsche facility in Metairie
Lance Traweek,
A state-of-the-art, 37,000-square-foot Porsche New Orleans facility is coming to Metairie at 8900 Veterans Blvd. The announcement comes just seven months after Gayle Benson acquired the dealership as part of the Ray Brandt Portfolio.
On Monday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m., there will be a groundbreaking ceremony at the new Metairie property as Benson Automotive Group and Porsche New Orleans unveil plans for a “Gen 5” facility.
The dealership will be one of six “Gen 5” facilities in the country, meaning it will feature a modern showroom, a spacious customer area, and an advanced service department with 18 service bays.
Porsche New Orleans embodies the luxury of the Porsche brand and offers a curated selection of the latest Porsche models, including sports cars and luxury SUVs. The full suite of services at the dealership includes maintenance and repair performed by certified technicians in a state-of-the-art service center.
“Our Gen 5 facility is designed to enhance the customer experience and reflect the Porsche brand’s commitment to innovation and excellence,” said Jerry Moisant, President of Benson Automotive Group.
In April 2024, New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson announced that she has completed the acquisition of the Ray Brandt portfolio of dealerships and collision centers (Click here for previous CityBusiness story).
The acquisitions, which complemented her existing network of dealerships and collision centers throughout the region, included Mercedes-Benz of South Mississippi, Porsche New Orleans, Volkswagen of Mississippi, Infiniti of South Mississippi, and three premier collision centers across Mississippi and Louisiana – on Airline Dr. and Edenborn Ave. in Metairie, and on Pass Road in Gulfport, Miss. Benson’s automotive portfolio also includes Mercedes-Benz of New Orleans, Mercedes-Benz Van Center, and Best Chevrolet and Cadillac of New Orleans.
Gayle is the widow of the late and former Saints owner Tom Benson, who owned more than 30 auto dealerships across Louisiana and Texas.

Audubon Nature Institute names new CEO
CityBusiness staff reports
Michael Sawaya
The Audubon Nature Institute has a new president and CEO, and he’s a familiar local leader. From Downtown to Uptown New Orleans, Michael J. Sawaya is changing leadership positions.
The former president/CEO of the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center will become the President/CEO of the Audubon Nature Institute. The nonprofit’s board of directors announced the unanimous selection of Sawaya to the leadership position on Thursday.
“I am thrilled for this new opportunity to lead one of the nation’s most respected organizations,” said Sawaya. “From conservation work to our popular attractions, Audubon has a place in the hearts of so many around the country and I am honored to follow in the footsteps of the man who made this amazing organization a reality.”
A Board-led search committee made the recommendation for the Board to hire Sawaya. In his role as President and CEO, Sawaya will be an employee of the Audubon Nature Institute Board of Directors. Sawaya will officially take his new position as President and CEO on January 1, 2025. Forman will continue to support Audubon’s efforts and will serve as President Emeritus.
“Michael is recognized as a leader within our community. The Audubon Board of Directors has every confidence in the selection of Michael for this position,” said Dr. Willard Dumas, Board Chair of the Audubon Nature Institute. “He is recognized as a leader from his work at the Convention Center and previously in San Antonio. He brings a wealth of knowledge and skill to this important position for Audubon and the community.
The national search of nearly 500 applicants selected Sawaya to replace Ron Forman, who has served as Audubon’s President and CEO for 53 years.
“The unanimous selection of Michael Sawaya for this key position at Audubon was extremely deliberate and thorough,” said Leslie Gottesegen, Audubon Board VP. “We spent hundreds of hours reviewing applications and interviews. While applicants came from all across the country, all of those who applied knew and respected Audubon Nature Institute and what it stands for. Although nearly 500 people applied, Michael’s passion and vision make him the best person for this challenging job.”
The Audubon Nature Institute includes a 10-facility portfolio of the Audubon Zoo, Audubon Aquarium, Audubon Insectarium, Woldenberg Riverfront Park, Audubon Park, Audubon Louisiana Nature Center, Audubon Center for Research of Endangered Species, Freeport-McMoRan Audubon Species Survival Center, Audubon Aquarium Rescue, and the Riverfront for All project to convert the Governor Nicholls and Esplanade Avenue wharves into publicly-accessible green space.
“Audubon Nature Institute is a unique organization with tremendous impact on our city, state, and region,” said Dumas. “Just as we celebrate Ron Forman’s success over the past 53 years, we believe Michael is the leader we need to shepherd Audubon to the future and develop new ways to share the wonders of nature.”
At the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, Sawaya oversaw operations for the sixth largest convention center in the country. Prior to arriving in New Orleans six years ago, Sawaya spent 15 years serving as executive director of the City of San Antonio’s Convention and Sports Facilities Department. Sawaya has extensive experience in creating public/private partnerships, governmental relations, and in all levels of the hospitality industry.
Among his successes while at the Convention Center, Sawaya led the strategic development of The River District, a multi-million-dollar project to turn 48-acres of Convention Center-owned land into a mixed-use retail/residential development. He also created the first-ever Capital Improvement program for the Convention Center, and a department to focus on sustainability.
Sawaya serves as co-chair of the Superbowl 2025 Facilities Committee, the Board of Directors for New Orleans and Company, the Greater New Orleans Chamber of Commerce, and New Orleans Museum of Art.
“Michael understands the importance of tourism in our community, and his experience in asset management and economic development will help New Orleans and Audubon Nature Institute remain successful,” said Walt Leger, President and CEO of New Orleans and Company. “His vision for The River District at the Convention Center is a natural tie with the Riverfront for All project Audubon Nature Institute is executing at the Governor Nicholls and Esplanade Avenue wharves. He understands the vital connection the city has with its riverfront, and we look forward to seeing the completion of these key projects.”

Rafael weakens into tropical storm; swells expected to cause Gulf Coast rip currents
By GABRIELLA KILLETT
Hurricane Rafael has been downgraded to a tropical storm and is expected to weaken further in the Gulf of Mexico over the next couple of days, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
Rafael had already weakened from a Category 3 to a Category 2 hurricane Friday morning by 9 a.m., and it is expected to become a remnant of a storm over the next two days, forecasters say.
The eye of the storm was over central Gulf of Mexico Saturday, and its strongest winds were on its northeast side, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Forecasters issued a coastal flood advisory for parts of southeastern Louisiana as the storm moves through the Gulf. Eastern Orleans, lower Plaquemines, lower St. Bernard and southeast St. Tammany parishes are under the advisory from 9 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday.
While the storm poses "no direct threat to land," its swells are creating a rip current risk along the Gulf Coast, according to forecasters. The swells are "likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions along the Gulf Coast through the weekend," forecasters say.
As it weakens, the storm will likely turn southwest through the middle of next week, according to forecasters.

Musician, composer, actor and writer Hoagy was one of the most successful entertainers of the 1930s and 40s. He recorded hundreds of songs, and several are most popular in the American songbook: Stardust, Heart and Soul, Georgia and The Nearness of You. Throw in In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening, Lazy Bones, Skylark, Ole Buttermilk Sky, Up the Lazy River and get set for a historically and musically entertaining evening.
Join Heidi, John, Paul, Rich, Alden, Dave, and Phil as we close out our Fall Songwriters Series with three nights of Hoagy’s music. Add the comedy of Chris Champagne under the stars of Monkey Hill and … “that old Rockin’ Chair won’t get ya.”

NATIONAL VANILLA CUPCAKE DAY
Cupcake lovers celebrate each year on National Vanilla Cupcake Day. These small cakes get their day on November 10th. Indulge in one or several.
Cupcakes have also been known as:
- Fairy Cakes
- Patty Cakes
- Cup Cakes (different from Cupcakes (one-word)
Cupcakes can be traced back to 1796 when a recipe notation for a cake to be baked in small cups was written in American Cookery (by Amelia Simmons). The earliest known documentation of the term cupcake was in 1828 in Seventy-five Receipts for Pastry, Cakes, and Sweetmeats in Eliza Leslie’s Receipts cookbook.
Cupcakes were originally baked in heavy pottery cups. Today, some bakers still use individual ramekins, small coffee mugs, larger teacups, or other small ovenproof pottery-type dishes for baking their cupcakes.
Today, cupcakes are an art form. Bakers create elaborate decorations and displays utilizing a variety of ingredients. Whether they're the centerpiece of a wedding, birthday, or anniversary cupcakes satisfy everyone's sweet tooth. Colorful and fun,

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon,November 11
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Kerin Auth Bembry and John House, La Luz Wine Importers
swirl news
FNWS
This week, we have a special tasting combining a Trust Your Importer and a Meet & Greet event in one! Importers, La Luz Selections, carefully curates wine from producers emphasizing authenticity, sustainability, and a strong sense of terroir. Their portfolio highlights winemakers who practice organic, biodynamic, or natural farming and winemaking methods, ensuring minimal intervention both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Their diverse portfolio tends to feature small-scale, artisanal European producers with an emphasis on Spain & Portugal.
Kerin Auth Bembry, founder of La Luz, has built a strong reputation as an expert in Spanish wines after spending extensive time in Spain and developing close relationships with winemakers across the country. Her deep knowledge of the regions and indigenous grape varieties has made her a champion of small, family-owned wineries that produce wines with a focus on terroir, sustainability, and tradition. Through her import business, she has helped bring a wide array of natural and organic Spanish and Portuguese wines to the American market that showcase the diverse styles of the regions.
We are excited to have Kerin join us for Friday Night Wine School, focusing on her imports from Spain and Portugal. We'll be tasting 5 unique and approachable wines, authentic representations of indigenous varieties and local traditions. We hope you'll join us! 4 spots remaining, go here for tickets: - La Luz Selections - Importer/Winemaker Tasting, Spain & Portugal with Kerin Auth Bembry

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.
A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.
Courtesy of Jefferson Parish
The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.
The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.
Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.
"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
