NATIONAL BLACK CAT DAY

Don't be superstitious on National Black Cat Day! October 27th celebrates the beauty of these sleek creatures. The day also seeks to raise awareness about the low adoption rates for black cats.

This time of year, many black cats may decorate many thresholds for Halloween and windows for spooky decor. However, these felines deserve the love and attention just as much as their tabby equivalents. Old notions have given these furry critters a bad reputation. The day is about turning that reputation around.

Their black canine counterparts also face similar adoption problems. So, it's not all about myth and mystery. However, increasing support for the black feline's plight is the goal of this companion holiday.

Navy Day is celebrated annually on October 27th to honor the United States Navy and its members. The Navy League of the United States established Navy Day in 1922 to commemorate the Navy's founding in October 1775 and the birthday of Theodore Roosevelt, who was an Assistant Secretary of the Navy and supported a strong Navy.

WWL anchor Eric Paulsen, a fixture in New Orleans television news for decades, dies at 74.

Eric Paulsen, a WWL-TV reporter and anchor who was the mainstay of the top-rated morning newscast for most of his 47 years at the CBS affiliate, died Saturday of cancer at Ochsner Medical Center. He was 74.

Paulsen, believed to be the longest-tenured anchor in the region, disclosed his cancer diagnosis in September, less than a month after receiving the Press Club of New Orleans’ Lifetime Achievement Award and a salute from the New Orleans City Council.

“I’ve always been a fighter,” he said in an open letter announcing that he would be taking a leave of absence for treatment. “This is a fight I don’t welcome, but I’m ready for this battle. My attitude is very positive, and I have a lot of support from family and friends, which means I will see you all soon.”

But he did not return to the station that had been his professional home for nearly half a century.

“I can’t imagine New Orleans without Eric Paulsen,” said Sally-Ann Roberts, his longtime co-anchor on the morning program. “Eric may not be from New Orleans, but as Frank Davis used to say, he is naturally New Orleans. It’s like he was born here.”

“He did what he did for so long on his terms, and so well,” said Dominic Massa, formerly WWL’s executive producer. “He was more than just the playful, fun-loving spirit you saw. There was more to him, and that was what made him special.”

A native of St. Louis who came to New Orleans after working radio and television jobs in Illinois, Iowa, Georgia and Wisconsin, Paulsen was quick to embrace the area’s culture, and he struck up professional and personal relationships with local icons including Fats Domino, Irma Thomas, Allen Toussaint and Aaron Neville.

Paulsen’s multifaceted insights, and the diverse array of guests he put on the air, helped enhance the station’s content and ratings, said Massa, now executive vice president and chief operating officer at WYES-TV.

“He made it look easy, but I knew he could talk about so many different things, and that’s the life of morning TV," Massa said. "It came naturally to him.”

And when the circumstances turned serious, Paulsen was rock-steady. Angela Hill, a longtime WWL-TV anchor, recalled the days after Hurricane Isaac, when she and Paulsen were on the air in three-hour shifts, relaying as much information as they could gather to anxious viewers.

“I could not have done that without Eric,” she said. “We had to keep going, and we were trying to fill three hours without commercials. With Eric, I was so grateful.”

Karen Swensen, a former WWL-TV reporter, said Paulsen relished reporting the news.

“Eric loved the big story," she said. "He loved to be in the middle of it. … He was good at challenging authority on important stories. He could be forthright and respectful at the same time as he was getting to the crux of an issue.”

“I think Eric was a news guy’s news guy,” said Nicole Waivers, the station’s news director.

Even though Paulsen seemed born to be on television, he had considered being a veterinarian. He didn’t take that career path, but he and his wife, Bethany Paulsen, over the years built up a menagerie that included two chickens, two giant tortoises, a room-size aquarium, a parrot and a cat.

He earned a degree in journalism at Southern Illinois University, where he worked at the campus’ radio and television stations.

After graduation, he was a disc jockey in Illinois and Iowa before moving to television. His first television jobs were in Savannah, Georgia, and Madison, Wisconsin.

Paulsen came to WWL-TV as a weekend reporter in 1977. In 1979, he and Lea Sinclair were named co-anchors of the New Orleans version of “PM Magazine,” a syndicated program that featured local and national stories.

During the program’s run of about five years, New Orleans was the source of a disproportionate number of stories that were broadcast nationwide “because New Orleans is just so crazy,” said Sinclair. “We always said it was the greatest gig we ever had.”

In 1985, Paulsen started working the morning shift, first with Andre Trevigne and then with Roberts.

“He could handle the light news, (but) when he was serious, he went to town,” Roberts said. “He was an excellent interviewer. He put people at ease. People would come into the station and they’d be nervous wrecks because they hadn’t been on TV. After a few minutes, they would be relaxed; it was as if they were talking to their best friend.”

Paulsen won a regional Emmy Award for his series about a trip to Cuba that New Orleans musicians and other culture bearers made. He also earned awards from the Press Club, The Associated Press and the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters.

Even though he became a treasured member of the New Orleans community, he didn’t plan it that way, his wife said.

“When he came here, he wasn’t planning on staying,” Bethany Paulsen said. “He wanted a network job. New Orleans embraced him, and he really embraced it back. This has become his home.”

“Whenever anyone needed anything — an MC, an auctioneer — Eric was there for the community,” Roberts said.

He got an indication of the regard New Orleanians had for him after the announcement that he would be undergoing cancer treatment, his wife said. “All day long, Eric was on the phone, talking to everyone and getting text messages.”

Knowing of Paulsen’s passion for New Orleans music and its practitioners, Roberts played a Thomas gospel CD when she visited him in his hospital room.

He couldn’t speak, she said. “But I saw his foot moving beneath the cover. He was listening.”

Paulsen was “one of a kind,” Roberts said. “There never has been and there never will be another Eric Paulsen.”

Survivors include his wife, Bethany Paulsen; two sons, Emmet Paulsen of New Orleans and Jon-Erik Mitchel of Dodge City, Kansas; a daughter, Lexei Schulz of New Orleans; a brother, Kim Paulsen of Chicago; and a sister, Karen Bauch of Winnipeg, Canada.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

MacArthur Returns to the Philippines

by Bradley Hart, PhD

General Douglas MacArthur's 1944 landing on the island of Leyte did not mark the end of the battle for the Philippines, but instead the beginning of one of the most hard-fought and brutal campaigns in the deadly final months of the war in the Pacific.

New Harmony Circle sculpture overlooks New Orleans on column where Robert E. Lee once stood

Crown-shaped creation marks the site’s importance to Carnival

A sculpture of a giant scarlet heart wearing a golden crown was craned to the top of the 60-foot column in the center of Harmony Circle in New Orleans on Sunday morning, and was bolted into the place where a statue of Lee once stood.

It's the first time the top of the column has been occupied since the Confederate icon was removed in 2017.

The new sculpture, by Mexican artist Raúl de Nieves, is meant to signal the importance of the New Orleans landmark in the celebration of Carnival. For generations, Harmony Circle has been a prime spot for watching parades.

The sculpture, titled “The Sacred Heart of Hours and the Trees of Yesterdays, Today, and Tomorrow,” will be the centerpiece of the Prospect.6 international art exhibition that opens in scattered locations across New Orleans on Nov. 2.

According to a statement by the artist, the sculpture was “inspired by and representative of Catholic iconography and Carnival culture.” It is meant to symbolize “a new beginning for the space, one that considers the expanse of New Orleans’ rich and vibrant cultural legacies and histories.”

“This work draws deeply from my first visit to New Orleans during Mardi Gras in 2008 — a transformative experience that shaped my understanding of spaces for celebration and self expression,” de Nieves wrote.

“During that visit, I collected discarded beaded necklaces left behind from the festivities,” Nieves wrote. “I repurposed them into an experimental sculpture that collapsed during its creation.”

Nieves felt that the impermanence of the beaded sculpture was symbolic of the fleeting nature of celebrations. “That work became a metaphor for embracing failure and chaos as integral parts of the artistic process, and this philosophy has shaped much of my current practice.”

In the spirit of that collapsed bead sculpture, Nieves produced four sparkling bead-wrapped trees, which stand in the huge planters at the base of the column.

The monument to the failed Confederate general was dedicated in 1884, at what was then known as Tivoli Circle.

The landmark was long seen by many as a relic of the city’s racist history. Finally, seven years ago, Lee was craned away and placed in storage, and the traffic circle was renamed.

Recently, discussions have begun about future redesign of the circle, including the possible removal of the old column.

The Prospect series of citywide exhibits began in 2008 and has taken place every two or three years since.

Prospect. 6, which will continue until Feb. 2, cost $5.5 million to produce and will feature 49 artists from New Orleans, across the United States, and locations around the globe, in museums and scattered sites.

It’s not the first time that the triennial Prospect exhibit has made use of Harmony Circle. Prospect.5, which took place in 2021, is probably best remembered for the surprise installation of a striking abstract sculpture of a river goddess by New York art star Simone Leigh at the traffic circle. Admired by many, but also criticized by some,

What does "nefarious" mean?

Wicked

Virtuous

Innocent

Pure

nefarious Pronunciation: /nəˈfɛːrɪəs/

Definition: (adj.) wicked or criminal; infamous; morally reprehensible

Origin: from Latin nefarius, from nefas 'crime, impiety' + -ous

Example: The company's nefarious schemes to avoid paying taxes were uncovered by investigative journalists.

"Wicked" is a synonym for "nefarious." It refers to something or someone that is evil, immoral, or sinful. Both words connote a sense of wrongdoing, but "wicked" is perhaps more often used to describe people, while "nefarious" can describe actions or situations as well. "Wicked" can also have a more playful connotation, as in "wicked sense of humor," but "nefarious" always has a negative connotation. Both words are often used in literature and media to describe villains and their actions.

The Project

This collaboration is aligned with our city’s efforts to uplift community voices and utilize our city’s culture to bring positive change to the community. We can bring opportunities for small businesses, local artists, and culture bearers. Most importantly, with community support, the project will create a self-funded long-term impact on our city, helping create positive change and local investment through the arts. The artwork will be both meaningful and representative of the diversity of our city, boosting social cohesion and strengthening community relationships.

The inaugural NOLA Mural Fest will launch in the fall of 2024 at Beanlandia October 25th-27th.

Nickel-A-Dance Fall 2024 Season to Begin on Frenchmen Street

by: OffBeat Staff

The fall 2024 season of Nickel-A-Dance, a beloved free traditional jazz concert series, is set to begin on September 29. For over three decades, Nickel-A-Dance has brought live jazz to the public, offering an afternoon of family-friendly entertainment on Sundays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. This year, the series moves to a new location at Favela Chic, located at 525 Frenchmen Street, continuing its tradition on this famous music corridor.

Originally started in 1994, Nickel-A-Dance has become a staple for fans of New Orleans jazz who may not frequent nightclubs. It attracts a diverse crowd, including children, families, and seniors, all coming together to celebrate traditional jazz as America’s original dance music. This fall’s lineup will feature some of the city’s most renowned jazz musicians.

The fall series will conclude on October 27 with Gregg Stafford and The Jazz Hounds. Stafford, a respected trumpeter and vocalist, has led several prominent New Orleans jazz bands, including Danny Barker’s Jazz Hounds and the Young Tuxedo Brass Band. He has dedicated his career to preserving the musical traditions of New Orleans and remains an active figure in the city’s jazz community.

Zombie Paintball Returns to NOLA Motorsports Park in Avondale

07:00 October 04, 2024

By: Charles Andre Blanchard

Celebrate the Spooky Season

Beginning October 10 and extending until November 2, attendees to Zombie Paintball can celebrate the Halloween season with a monstrous bang (and potentially satisfy their need for speed).

Festivities

This popular seasonal activity once again returns to the premier racing facility in Avondale, this time with an enhanced festival area and zombie-hunting scenes, courtesy of their new partnership with Mardi Gras Productions. The 20-minute experience includes a bus ride to designated target stations, where riders will test their accuracy and try to defeat all the zombie enemies. They are also given a chance to reload their guns and go back through the stations before finishing.

Guests can also explore nearby festivities to celebrate the Halloween season. Food trucks will be present, along with stations for pumpkin carving and face painting. Local craft vendors and more themed-attractions make this a great family-friendly stop this Halloween. For the adults, drink specials will also be offered on several days.

NOTE: The only targets are the zombies. Attendees will not be harmed or shot at. However, children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Pricing & Packages

General admission begins at $22 per person and includes a rental paintball gun and 150 rounds of ammo.

For $45, Guests can purchase the Zombie Paintball + Karting package, which includes the aforementioned rental gun and ammo but also an added go-kart session on the NOLA Motorsports track.

Have a large group? NOLA Motorsports also offers a $650 party package. With this, up to 28 people can skip the line and each receive a commemorative bandana before boarding a private bus and being given the accompanying rental guns and ammo.

For tickets, visit the NOLA Motorsports Park's box office or their website.

Hours & Dates of Operation

What does "benign" mean?Harmless

Evil

Dangerous

Malicious

benign

/bɪˈnaɪn/

Definition: Gentle and kindly; not harmful or detrimental.

Origin: From the Latin word "benignus," meaning "kind" or "good."

Example: The doctor assured her that the tumor was benign and posed no threat to her health.

"Harmless" is the essence of what "benign" signifies. When something is described as benign, it implies that it is not only gentle but also free from danger or risk. For instance, a benign tumor, while it may need monitoring, does not invade surrounding tissues or spread to other parts of the body. In a broader context, the term can apply to actions or behaviors that are non-threatening or beneficial, such as a benign smile or a benign policy initiative. Thus, "benign" embodies a reassuring quality of safety and kindness in various contexts.benign

NATIONAL AMERICAN BEER DAY

National American Beer Day raises a glass to the rich American beermaking history and those who savor the continued traditions. Pour your favorite pint with millions who enjoy the storied brews across the nation.

U.S. Brewing History

Brewing beer in America begins long before Europeans arrived since Native Americans brewed beer from a variety of ingredients. They used corn, birch sap, and water to ferment their beverage. Then when the first colonists arrived in Virginia, they began combining their brewing traditions with the supplies at hand - that included corn, too. Since then, brewing and brewers became a principal occupation in the colonies. Interestingly, the first white child born in Manhattan grew up to be the first brewer born in America.

Today, the brewery established by David G. Yuengling is the oldest producing brewery in the United States. He established the Eagle Brewery in 1829. Amazingly, the brewery still remains in the family to this day.

Unlike most other breweries of the time, the Eagle Brewery survived Prohibition. In fact, very few survived. Those that did survive tried various legal and illegal tactics. In the Eagle Brewery's case, they reduced their alcohol content to within the legal limit. They also branched out. Ice cream anyone? Yes, the Yuengling's started a dairy. Others turned their beermaking supplies into other products. When prohibition lifted, they returned to full-fledged beermaking.

Despite these efforts, nearly every brewer existing before prohibition dissolved. Out of just over 1,300 brewers, only about 100 remained after prohibition. Today, we recognize the names of many of those surviving breweries.

The skill of a brewer requires years of practice in the trade. It's revered even. In Milwaukee, their professional baseball team is named after the brewer. In St. Louis and Denver, the stadiums are named after prominent brewers.

More than 2,100 breweries are manufacturing beer in the United States. They range in size from industry giants to brewpubs and microbreweries.

American Beer Facts

  • The U.S. produced 196 million barrels of beer in 2009.
  • Americans consume roughly 20 US gallons of beer per capita annually.
  • In 2008, the United States ranked sixteenth in the world in per capita consumption. However, total consumption was second only to China.
  • After Congress repealed prohibition, the industry consolidated into a small number of large-scale breweries.
  • The majority of the new breweries in the U.S. are small breweries and brewpubs. As members of the Brewers Association, they are termed "craft breweries" to differentiate them from the larger and older breweries.
  • Larger breweries most commonly produce the American lager.
  • However, smaller breweries (many founded in the 1980s) produce a range of styles.
  • Beer styles originating in the United States include: American pale ale Pennsylvania porter American IPA steam beer amber ale cream ale Cascadian dark ale.

Probably shot from the balcony of what is now "Ralph's on the Park" which is the oldest building in the area.

It was still mostly undeveloped land and the Peristyle, Popp Bandstand, the Casino, the Art Museum, Pizzati Gate and most everything else we now think of as iconic in City Park had yet to be built.

Madame Begue' passes away on October 19, 1906.

Madame Bégué‘s Restaurant was an institution in New Orleans, from its founding in 1863 to its closure in 1917, 107 years ago.

Located opposite the French Market at the corner of Decatur and Madison streets, Madame Bégué‘s Restaurant famously served only one meal, a late, second breakfast, which later became known as “Brunch".

Elizabeth Kettenring met and married Louis Dutreuil. In 1863, the couple opened Dutrey’s Coffee House near the open-air market in the French Quarter, After Dutreuil’s death in 1875, Kettenring married the bartender, Hypolyte Bégué and in 1880, changed the name of the coffeehouse to Bégué‘s. Madame Bégué served one multi-course meal starting at 11 a.m.which lasted 3 to 4 hours and consisted of 6 courses: omelets, calf liver, artichokes, turtle soup, meat with sauces, Sicilian vegetables, and chicory coffee.

During the 1884 World's Cotton Centennial Exposition, the popularity of the restaurant exploded, becoming a top tourist attraction. When Madame Bégué died on October 19, 1906. In after the death of Hypolyte, her 2nd husband, the property was sold to Tujague’s.

The Royal Sonesta Hotel would open a restaurant named Bégué‘s in honor of her and its history.

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon, October 28

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

BEAUTIFUL DREAMERS - Minrose Gwin

Join us for an evening with author Minrose Gwin when she presents and signs her new novel, BEAUTIFUL DREAMERS.

From Minrose Gwin, award-winning author of The Accidentals, comes Beautiful Dreamers, a story of a precocious teen and her mother, their gay best friend, and the con man who unravels their family.

It’s 1953 when Memory Feather and her mother, Virginia, are welcomed back home to the Mississippi Gulf Coast community of Belle Cote by Virginia’s childhood friend Mac McFadden, whose verve and energy buoy the recently divorced Virginia to embrace this new chapter. Memory (“Mem”) is unlike other girls: she is attuned to the voices of plants and animals and is missing two fingers on her twisted left hand. The three of them knit their lives together and become a close, though unconventional, family.

While Mac’s wealth, brains, and good humor have allowed him to carve out a niche in Belle Cote, his position as a gay man active in the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement exposes him to censure, harassment, and even brutality. When the unscrupulous and charismatic Tony Amato arrives in Belle Cote as Mac’s “guest,” he sets in motion a series of events that will shatter familial bonds and forever change Mem’s life. Now, an adult Mem recounts the story of the scars Tony left in her teenage years, confronting her culpability in the disastrous events of that final summer.

Sweeping, dramatic, and vividly rendered, Beautiful Dreamers is a novel of innocence and betrayal, love and intolerance, and the care and honesty we owe the families we choose.

Minrose Gwin is the author of the novels The Queen of Palmyra, a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers pick and finalist for the John Gardner Fiction Book Award; Promise, which was shortlisted for the Willie Morris Award in Southern Literature; and The Accidentals, which received the 2020 Mississippi Institute for Arts and Letters Award in Fiction. Her fourth novel, Beautiful Dreamers, has just been released by Hub City Press. She has also published a memoir, Wishing for Snow, about the collision of poetry and psychosis in her mother’s life, and four books of literary and cultural criticism, most recently Remembering Medgar Evers: Writing the Long Civil Rights Movement. She was coeditor of The Literature of the American South, a Norton anthology, and The Southern Literary Journal. She received the Society for the Study of Southern Literature Richard Beale Davis Award for Distinguished Lifetime Service to Southern Letters and the William Wisdom/William Faulkner Books-in-Process Award for Rescue, the novel she’s working on now.

Like the characters in her novel Promise, Minrose Gwin is a native of Tupelo, Mississippi. She began her writing career as a journalist and later taught at universities across the country, most recently the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was Kenan Eminent Professor of English. She now lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with her partner, Ruth Salvaggio, and several loquacious four-leggeds.

Get out your lederhosen, spruce up your dirndls and prepare to eat and drink German style — It’s time for Oktoberfest at Middendorf’s!  Oktoberfest is an annual tradition that runs for 6 weeks, every Wednesday and Thursday, at Middendorf’s Manchac and Middendorf’s Slidell. It starts on Oktober 2, 2024 and ends on November 7, 2024. That’s right… Oktoberfest is so much fun that it spills over into November!

There is a different Oktoberfest meal available each week (while supplies last):

APPETIZERS

  • Kartoffelpuffer mit Apfel Sosse 8.75  (German Potato Pancake with Apple Sauce)
  • Maultaschen in Brühe mit Gerösteten Zwiebeln 10.95  (German Ravioli in Broth)
  • Nürnbergerle 10.25 (3 small Bratwust with Sauerkraut and Pretzel)
  • Riesenbrezel 10.00  (Giant Pretzel with mustard)
  • Vesper Teller 14.50  (Assorted meats & cheeses served with pickle, radish, onion, mustard and pretzel)
  • Weisswurst 10.25  (White Sausage served with pretzel and sweet mustard)
  • Wurstsalat 9.25  (Chopped German Salami, Cold Cuts, Cheeses, Pickles and Onion tossed in Vinaigrette)
  • It’s the Chef’s Choice which appetizers will be available each week. Stay tuned!

ENTREES & DESSERTS (A different meal is available each week of Oktoberfest.)

  • 10/30/24 & 10/31/24 — Schweinshaxe, Bayerischkraut und Brezel 21.50  (Pork Hind Shank/Ham Hock, Smothered Cabbage and Pretzel);  Apfel Strudel mit Vanille Eis 7.25  (Apple Strudel with Vanilla Ice Cream)

11/6/24 & 11/7/24 — Wiener Schnitzel und Geröstet Semmelknödel mit Pilzrahmsoße, Gemischtem Salat und Brezel  19.50  (Breaded Thin Pork Loin and Dumpling with Mushroom Cream Sauce, Salad and Pretzel);  Schwarzwälderkirschtorte 7.25 (Black Forest Cake)

The German expertise comes from Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer who is a native of Germany.  He grew-up in the hamlet of Bächlingen where his family still lives today.  The village was established in 950 AD and boasts a grand population of around 150 people.

“It’s an honor to share my German heritage with everyone through the recipes that I grew up with,” said Middendorf’s Owner Horst Pfeifer.  “I think Louis Middendorf would have been so happy to see Oktoberfest here at the restaurant.  Louis was also from Germany, and he founded Middendorf’s back in 1934 with his wife, Josie.  It’s funny because Middendorf’s is so widely known for seafood that a lot of people don’t realize that Middendorf is actually a German name.”

  • During Oktoberfest, there is a different German meal available each week for lunch and dinner, 10:30am-9:00pm (while supplies last).  Guests who eat an Oktoberfest meal for all six weeks will receive an Oktoberfest Prize!  Punch cards must be punched each week and turned in on the final week.
  • The full regular menu is also available for guests. So, you can have a German meal, and your friend can have the Thin Fried Catfish. Everyone’s happy!
  • Of course, we have a great selection of German beer and liqueur to go with your German meal (see below).
  • Authentic German music is also in store for Oktoberfest. We’ll have live accordion music every night of Oktoberfest, 4:30pm-8:30pm. In Manchac, David C. Symons will join us. In Slidell, Will Robichaux will play for the 1st week, and then for the next 5 weeks, it will be Greg Speck (aka Captain Squeeze).
  • Join in the fun by dressing up in your favorite lederhosen, dirndls and German accessories just like our front of house staff. We’ll have a great variety of hats and souvenirs in our gift shop.

Corsica, a French island in the Mediterranean, has a fascinating wine culture that's shaped by its unique blend of French and Italian influences, rugged terrain, and Mediterranean climate. Despite being part of France, Italy’s influence on Corsica is profound, shaping the island’s culture, language, architecture, cuisine, and especially its wine traditions. Corsica was under Genoese rule for nearly five centuries (from the late 13th century until 1768), and its proximity to Tuscany and Sardinia also contributed to strong Italian connections.

Most of the Corsican grapes have ties to Italy as well. Nielluccio is Corsica’s most important red grape and is genetically very similar to Sangiovese, Italy’s iconic grape, particularly from Tuscany. Vermentino, known in Corsica as Malvoisie de Corse, is widely planted in both Corsica and Sardinia, as well as in regions of mainland Italy like Liguria and Tuscany. It is thought to have originated from Italy, possibly Liguria, and spread across the Mediterranean. Sciaccarello, another key red grape of Corsica, is believed to be related to Mammolo, a lesser-known grape from Tuscany. Mammolo is often used in blends, such as in Chianti, but in Corsica, Sciaccarello has developed a distinct identity.

Even after France acquired Corsica in 1768, Italian influence remained deeply embedded in the island’s identity. Many Corsicans still feel a closer cultural affinity to Italy than to mainland France, especially given the shared history, language, and food traditions. This dual identity makes Corsica unique within France, with its Italian roots constantly blending with French culture to create something distinct. It also contributes to the island’s distinctive wine style—one that’s both rustic and refined, combining the structure of Italian reds with the elegance of French whites.

Corsican wines are still relatively under the radar, which makes them an exciting discovery for wine drinkers looking for something new and unique. Dave Sobiesk will accompany us on this tour as Artisan Fine Wines has a great selection from the island for us to choose from. I hope you'll join us! Use this link for tickets,Corsica

A Tribute to the Queen: Irma Thomas

November 27th | Tipitina's

Tipitina’s, in collaboration with producer Sonny Schneidau, is thrilled to announce A Tribute to the Queen – Irma Thomas, a special event honoring the legendary Soul Queen of New Orleans. This one-night-only tribute will showcase performances by Irma Thomas herself, alongside a star-studded lineup of female artists who will honor her legacy by performing her most beloved songs. Among the performers are Galactic, Ani DiFranco, Marcia Ball, Jelly Joseph, Erica Falls, Leyla McCalla, Joy Clark, Susan Cowsill, Gabrielle Cavassa, Sierra Green and Jolynda “Kiki” Chapman. Irma Thomas, joined by Galactic, will also preview songs from their forthcoming album Audience With The Queen, set for release in 2025.

A portion of the event’s proceeds will benefit the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic.

Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana

For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!

We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.

The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.

Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.

And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.

Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.

Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

WE GOT NEXT.

See you in New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX on FOX
