The Message this Week

Preaching Text: Genesis 21:1-3; 22:1-14

Joy and sacrifice. We come to a confusing story. Abraham and Sarah (ages 100 and 90) have a long awaited child, the one who holds the promise of the future of God’s people. God asks Abraham to sacrifice the child. Don’t worry, God intervenes to save Isaac, but we are still left wondering why. Let’s explore together this weekend.

Holy God, help us to grow in our understanding of the stories in Scripture that may confuse us and through Your wisdom, guide us through the confusing situations in our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Real questions from real people to learn more about faith.

 Why would God demand a sacrifice?

• Train our eyes and hearts upon your steadfastness, so that we also might be found faithful to your covenant.
• Forgive our missteps and help show us how we can be part of healing this beautiful but wounded planet.
• Make us to work for a society where such crime is neither persistent nor tolerated.
• Lord, your presence is balm to those who suffer illness or long for wholeness. Feed them on your promises and surround them with your healing.
• Shine the light of all your faithful children who have gone forward to pave the way before us as we strive to continually follow you.

We lift all these prayers, and those of our hearts, to your loving care, O God. Receive them and restore our hope in your promises. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Join us for an LOMC Work Day on Saturday, October 4. The primary focus will be to clean up the area around the maintenance building near the front entrance (a.k.a. Mount Trashmore) along with whatever other projects the property manager might have. This could be a mini mission trip for anyone who has a soft spot in their heart for LOMC or might not be able to commit to a full week away. Pub Theology is Monday, September 22, 6:30-8:30 at Up North Winery in Geneva.

Gather with folks from other Geneva churches to discuss the topic, ‘What ever happened to common ground?’ Contact Pastor Trudy for more information.
