Sixth Sunday of Easter

CHRIST IS RISEN!

CHRIST IS RISEN INDEED!

Eastertide is a period of 50 days, beginning on Easter Sunday and ending at Pentecost, when we celebrate the birth of the Church. During Eastertide, we celebrate the Risen Christ and imagine how we might live as Easter people.

GIFTS OF LOVE

This week, for Mother's Day, Pastor Kyle spoke about some of his favorite gifts given to him by his mother, including a ceramic communion and baptismal set, as well as a pastoral stole featuring some of his favorite childhood tv shows and movies. After some fun conversation with our young students, he then offered that the Holy Spirit and the gift of love and grace is one of the greatest gifts Jesus Christ ever gave each and every one of us.

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him because he abides with you, and he will be in you.

“I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me, and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.”

Each week, the children color the illustrations in their own Bible story booklet as they read a paraphrase of the scripture passage that helps tell the Bible story we are learning about.

In our Bible story this week, the disciples are worried about Jesus leaving them. They're afraid they'll be alone and feel lonely without him. Jesus reassures the disciples that they will never be alone. He promises the Holy Spirit, an "Advocate", who will comfort them, and even when Jesus is gone, if they feel lonely, he'll still be there with them through the Holy Spirit.

Each week we listen to a book and/or watch a video that coincides with our lesson for connection and enrichment.

This week we watched a portion of the video:

JESUS PROMISES

THE HOLY SPIRIT

We remembered where we are on the liturgical calendar and how we are now in the season of EASTERTIDE, which is a period of 50 days, that begins on Easter Sunday and ends at Pentecost.

We also talked about how during this season of Easter, it is a time when we celebrate the new life Jesus' resurrection created. We also shared with each other new things happening in our own lives.

We discussed this week's Bible story, and how the disciples fear being alone when Jesus leaves them. Jesus promised to send comfort through the Holy Spirit, whom he called an "Advocate." And, because they know Jesus and his teachings, he will always live in them and be with them, even when they feel lonely.

We also talked about what LONELINESS means. LONELINESS is what we feel when we need a connection with others in our community but feel like we can't get that connection for some reason.

We shared about times when we felt lonely and who helped us when we felt lonely.

We also talked about the promise Jesus made to the disciples to reassure them they won't be lonely - that he promised to send the Holy Spirit, whom he called an "ADVOCATE". We learned that ADVOCATE means - the Holy Spirit, a helper and counselor who offers support, strength and comfort.

We remembered that even when Jesus is gone, if the disciples feel lonely, he will still be there with them through the Holy Spirit.

In addition to coloring the illustrations in their own Bible story booklets, each week, as time allows, the children will also make a craft that ties with the lesson.

The children made

a "Holy Spirit" craft.

The children colored, cut and glued images onto a pictures to remind them of the promise of Jesus.

We remember that:

JESUS PROMISED TO SEND

THE HOLY SPIRIT

AND

JESUS PROMISED

TO BE WITH US ALWAYS.

Each week, as time allows, the children will play a game or experience a fun activity together to help them think creatively about the scripture.

The children made a

Mother's Day flower craft!

The children used watercolor paint to paint flowers and leaves. After painting, they cut and glued their flowers and leaves to a painted popsicle stick. The children were encouraged to write special notes on the petals if they would like.

During this activity, we furthered our discussion on the Scripture and talked about how Jesus said the greatest commandments are to love God and love one another. We shared times when we felt extremely loved and how we have felt God's love, or the presence of the Spirit in our own life.

We also shared how excited we were to celebrate Mother's Day and how our mother's and motherly figures in our lives are special gifts of love from God!

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

Every week, the children will take home an additional coloring page which has an illustration of a short phrase from our scripture passage. I encourage our parents to color with your children to reflect on the scripture and have an even deeper connection with the scripture and each other!
