NATIONAL NO RHYME (NOR REASON) DAY

National No Rhyme Nor Reason Day on September 1st recognizes words that do not rhyme with any other words in the English language.

While September celebrates many random and capricious days, this observance focuses on specific words. Words that don't rhyme with any other word are called refractory rhymes. Poets reason that avoiding these words helps keep their poetry consistent. However, refractory words only interrupt poems where rhyme and reason matter.

The less fickle poet takes on these challenging words. Toss out the rhymes. Say farewell to meter. Be whimsical and playful. The Jabberwocky never stopped Lewis Carrol. Dilly dally in a world of mishmash and find a verse that fits the spirit of the day. Deliver an envelope full of words directly up the chimney. Tilt the accent one way and lilt it another until the word fits in fluttery ways.

There need be no reason, nor rhyme for that matter. Not all poems do. Then again, you could dive deep like Alexander Atkins did in 2014 and search a little bit harder for the perfect rhyme. Check out his blog that stretches the edges of the language to fill the void left by refractory rhymes.

Some unrhymable (or nearly unrhymable) words in the English language include:

  • Orange
  • Month
  • Silver
  • Spirit
  • Chimney
  • Purple
  • Woman
  • Ninth
  • Pint

What does "dyspeptic" mean?

Cheerful

Relaxed

Grumpy

Energetic

dyspeptic

/dɪsˈpɛptɪk/

Definition: Relating to or suffering from indigestion; having a irritable or morose disposition.

Origin: Derived from the Greek word "dyspeptikos," from "dys-" meaning "bad" or "difficult" and "peptein," meaning "to digest."

Example: After a long day at work, he was in a dyspeptic mood, snapping at anyone who dared to ask him a question.

"Grumpy" is an apt way to describe the meaning of "dyspeptic." When someone is labeled as dyspeptic, it often implies more than just physical discomfort; it conveys a sense of irritability or a sour disposition. This term captures the essence of being short-tempered and unpleasant, akin to how one might feel when suffering from digestive issues. Thus, a dyspeptic individual might not only be dealing with a stomachache but also projecting their discomfort onto others through a grumpy demeanor, making interactions with them particularly challenging.

NATIONAL BURNT ENDS DAY

Are you ready for some flavor and sauce? If you said yes, then National Burnt Ends Day on September 1 is your chance to celebrate a one of the tastiest BBQ celebrations on National Day Calendar!

Once considered trimmings or left-overs, burnt ends come from the point of a brisket. However, these days burnt ends take center stage in a BBQ basket of smoky flavor and goodness.

The name comes from the longer cooking time required for tender brisket. As a result, these thinner points become a little charred and tougher than the rest of the meat.

Don't let that description deter you, though. As a tradition in the Kansas City area, they've mastered burnt ends and a taste for them has spread across the country.

Delicious on their own, burnt ends also taste amazing on sandwiches and in stews. They can be sweet, spicy, and of course smoky. A hint of hickory or cherry tantalizes the senses. No wonder there is an entire day to celebrate!

What does "palaver" mean?

Clear thinking

Fast movement

Prolonged idle talk

Quick decision

Definition: Prolonged idle talk or conversation; a lengthy discussion or debate, often characterized by a lack of substance or purpose.

Origin: The term originates from the Spanish word "palabre," meaning "word," which evolved from the Portuguese "palavra." It entered the English language in the mid-17th century, initially referring to idle chatter or discussion among traders and later adopting a broader meaning.

Example: After hours of palaver about the upcoming project, they realized they had yet to make any concrete decisions.

"Palaver" refers to prolonged idle talk, which can often be seen as excessive discussion without meaningful outcomes. This term captures the essence of conversations that meander without purpose, where participants engage in chatter rather than constructive dialogue. It suggests a sense of aimlessness, where the focus drifts away from relevant topics, leading to a lack of resolution or clarity. Often used to describe situations in casual or social contexts, "palaver" highlights the tendency to engage in talk that, while sometimes entertaining, ultimately contributes little to progress or understanding in a given matter.

Local Trademarks

As early as Colonial times, the United States had protected the intellectual property of businesses through the use of a “trademark.” The first Congressional act to standardize issuance of trademarks was passed in 1870 but overturned by the Supreme Court. A second law was passed in 1881 and business scrambled to reapply for trademark protection.

Shown below are two such trademark applications. The first registered May 15, 1888, to the Cusimano Brothers for their “Olio d’Oliva Sopraffino di Lucca” brand of olive oil. The second registered on June 4, 1889, to F. Suarez & Sons Cigars for their “Morning Star” brand of cigars. In both cases the product label illustrating both the name and the artwork were part of the registration.

“Morning Star” was only one of several brands manufactured by F. Suarez & Sons from their Southern Star Cigar Manufactory at 82 Gravier Street (now 430 Gravier Street). Their other major brand was “El Escudo” which they advertised as the “Best 5 cent Cigar in the World.” Truth in advertising regulations would come later. Their building would become Stewart, Carnal & Company coffee importers in the 1920s.

1880: The Cotton Levee at New Orleans

An unattributed photograph from 1880 showing the cotton levee at the foot of Canal Street. At the far right background you will recognize the Canal Street Ferry Terminal clock tower. This was the cotton levee on the upriver side of Canal Street. The sugar landing was on the downriver side of Canal Street. For most of the day in New Orleans the only subject spoken about was cotton, even outside of the New Orleans Cotton Exchange, a perfect mania for speculating in their favorite staple. Planters, factors, traders, and brokers all engage in a feverish hum between noon and sunset as clerks pour over telegrams regarding, what else, cotton.

We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon, August 19

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.

This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.

  • Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Optional add-ons:
  • Shrimp
  • Crabmeat
  • Chicken
  • Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese

Fun Facts:

  • Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
  • Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
  • Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
  • Our full menu is also available.
  • Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.

We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

2024 SCHEDULE

LSU Football

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.

Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.

Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.

The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.

One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”

Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.

The program will run from 10 am to 3 pm, with coffee, a boxed lunch and closing reception.  Visit www.bkhouse.org for details.

Dedicated to maintaining the historical treasure, the annual BK House Soiree in the Vieux Carre’ will take place on Sunday, September 29.
