AUTUMNAL EQUINOX
The Autumnal Equinox in September ushers in a change of season. It is observed annually when the sun can be seen directly overhead along the equator. The day marks the end of summer and beginning of fall in the Northern Hemisphere.
The autumn equinox is one of two days when all points on Earth except the polar regions see the sunrise and set at due east and due west. With few exceptions, all latitudes see almost precisely 12 hours of daylight and 12 of darkness.
While the United States marks the official end of summer at Labor Day, the seasons mark time differently. Depending on where we live, the trees and animals behave differently based on the amount of sunlight they receive. By the time the equinox arrives in September, the leaves in many parts of the country have already begun to change. The air at night is crisper.
People's minds begin to think about warmer clothes and preparing their homes for winter. Since children are already in school, most summer activities have ended. In the fields, farmers eagerly watch for the opportune time to harvest. Apples, pumpkins, and root vegetables ripen in the orchards and gardens. On cool evenings, long walks along the trails under the canopies of gold, umber, violet and crimson keep us warm.

NATIONAL BROWN BUTTER DAY
September 22 is National Brown Butter Day! This saucy food holiday celebrates the delicious results of transforming simple butter into a culinary delight.
Brown butter, also known as beurre noisette, is said to have originated in France centuries ago. Even though the date is unknown, making brown butter is a cooking technique that was included in early recipes found in cookbooks printed during both the medieval and renaissance eras.
5 Saucy Brown Butter Facts
- Brown butter is created from the Maillard reaction, which occurs when sugar and proteins are heated together at a high temperature.
- Beurre noisette, which is the French term for brown butter, translates into "hazelnut butter."
- Brown butter can be made with a light golden brown color and a deep amber color. The color is the result of how long it is heated.
- It's recommended to use brown butter immediately after making. However, you can store it in the fridge for up to 10 days in an airtight container.
- Brown butter contains phytosterols, which can help with lowering bad cholesterol levels when eaten in moderation.
One of the most popular uses of brown butter is in desserts. When used in baked goods, brown butter creates a nutty flavor. But, cooking with brown butter isn't just for baking. In fact, brown butter has a variety of uses in the culinary world. As a sauce, it adds complementary flavor to vegetables, poultry, soups, and stews. You can even fry seafood in brown butter to add a flavorful crust. The best thing about brown butter versatility is the recipe is the same for every use.
Easy Brown Butter Recipe
Making brown butter is extremely easy. The only ingredient you need is a 1/2 cup of butter. Add the butter to a small saucepan and heat over medium heat, making sure you stir the butter occasionally while it heats. The butter will begin to bubble, then foam up. Once the foam subsides, you will notice the milk solids have separated in the pan and turned golden brown. Once you reach your desired color, remove from heat and let cool. If you're looking for a smoother texture for your brown butter, strain it through a fine-meshed strainer.

The first day of fall will feel more like summer.
Highs will be in the low 90s with ample sunshine. A few very spotty showers are possible across the area.
The heat continues through the first half of the week before a front makes it to the Gulf Coast dropping temperatures in the later half of the week.
Rain chances will also return as tropical moisture moves into the Gulf.
We are monitoring an area in the NW Caribbean and Gulf for tropical development this week. A system will likely form by early or mid-week.
A hurricane can’t be ruled out so Louisiana to Florida residents need to watch the forecast closely.
The trajectory of the system is still uncertain as we have a cutoff low forming over the Plains. The positioning of this feature will dictate how far east the tropical system is steered.
Until a center forms there will be a lot of uncertainty on not only the track but the strength, so continue to check in on the latest updates.

Giraffes, Zebras and Peafowl, Oh My!
Doesn’t matter whether you’re young or simply young at heart; a fall trip to Global Wildlife’s 900-acre “African savanna in Louisiana” should be high on your list of must-do experiences. From September through December, the wildlife preserve near Folsom, LA, buzzes with excitement during the breeding and birthing season.
As unique as human fingerprints, no two Grant’s zebras have the same striping pattern. A group of zebras is called a dazzle, and with good reason. When they huddle together it’s difficult for predators to pick out an individual zebra to prey upon. Prior to giving birth, mother zebras will separate themselves from the herd. After the foal is born, mom and baby will study each other for hours, memorizing each other’s striping pattern and imprinting vocalizations and scents. This defense mechanism helps mom and foal to reunite quickly if they are separated during a chase. The Grant’s zebra herd has grown by two this autumn, and watching the new foals follow their mom, prancing around on spindly little legs, is sure to bring smiles of delight.
At Global Wildlife’s Visitor Center, a trio of new peachicks religiously follow their mother, Pearl the Indian blue peahen, who is teaching them how to forage for insects and other foods. Pearl faithfully sat on a nest she built on the ground in the Kangaroo Walkabout, and this is her first clutch of chicks to hatch. Pearl communicates with her babies using clucks and calls, encouraging them not to wander far from her protective gaze. Sharp-eyed guests might catch a glimpse of them when they visit!

Join us this Sunday, September 22, 2024 at 4:30 PM and listen as Peter Finney, Jr together with Klara Cvitanovich will present "Drago's: An American Journey". (Note later time due to Saints game at noon)
Klara and Drago Cvitanovich, two immigrants from Croatia, came to the U.S. in 1958 with little money and forged a seafood restaurant empire known throughout the world. With hard work, tenacity and the willpower to seize opportunity, Drago and Klara turned their mom-and-pop restaurant into a Crescent City icon and invented a New Orleans staple – the charbroiled oyster – a dish that nearly every seafood restaurant in the country tries to emulate. Their inspiring story validates the power of hard work, perseverance, faith in family and generosity.
Doors open at 12:00 pm. This event is FREE and open to the public. Ample parking is available at the rear of the building. Enjoy delicious German food, tasty beers and a full bar.

efficient Pronunciation: /ɪˈfɪʃ(ə)nt/ Definition: (adjective) achieving maximum productivity with minimum wasted effort or expense. Origin: Late Middle English, from Latin efficient- ‘accomplishing’, from the verb efficere, from ex- ‘out, completely’ + facere ‘do, make’. Example: The new washing machine is efficient and uses less water and energy to clean clothes.
Productive
Productive is an adjective that describes a person or process that generates a significant output or outcome. It is closely related to efficient, as both words are connected to the idea of achieving a goal or objective in the most effective way possible. However, productive places a greater emphasis on the actual output or outcome, rather than the actions taken to achieve it. For example, an efficient worker may be able to complete tasks quickly and with minimal waste, but a productive worker will generate a large quantity of high-quality work that meets or exceeds expectations. In short, being productive means achieving a lot with the resources available, while being efficient means achieving the same results with as little waste as possible.

PENNY DREADFULS: The REMARKABLE ROOMING-HOUSE of MADAME LE MONDE
by Tennessee Williams
It’s Tennessee Williams as you’ve never seen him as these unhinged vignettes probe the macabre corners of the human psyche. Wacky, weird, and wild desire splatters in all directions on the stage as three of Williams’ most outrageous stories come to life in a one-of-a-kind choose-your-own-adventure night of curiosities and creeps. Not for kids and not for the faint of heart!
The night of theatre will also include Williams'
Why Do You Smoke So Much, Lily & The Case Of The Crushed Petunias.

NATIONAL WHITE CHOCOLATE DAY
Satisfy your sweet tooth on National White Chocolate Day on September 22. Enjoy it with pretzels or drizzled on pastries. It's a versatile confection with many ways to celebrate!
Since white chocolate does not contain cocoa solids, it is not chocolate in the strictest sense. During the process of manufacturing chocolate, the dark-colored solids of the cocoa bean separates from the fatty content. But unlike milk or dark chocolate, the solids are not reincorporated. As a result, white chocolate also does not contain as much caffeine or antioxidants as its darker counterparts.
Nestlé launched the first white chocolate bar in Europe. Known by the names Milkybar and Galak, Nestlé first produced the candy bar in the 1930s. Besides candy bars and fudge, white chocolate also comes in liqueurs, chips, ganache, truffles, and liquid forms.

NATIONAL ICE CREAM CONE DAY
Despite the official end of summer, National Ice Cream Cone Day continues celebrating on September 22! I scream! You scream! We all scream for ice cream!
While some controversy exists as to who invented the ice cream cone, the earliest mention shows up in French cookbooks around 1825. Originally referred to as “little waffles,” the cones were waffles rolled into the shape of a cone.
In the United States, ice cream cones first became popular in the late 1800s. Confectioners turned the first cones by hand. The ice cream cone made its debut at the World’s Fair in St. Louis in 1904. In 1912, an inventor from Oregon obtained a patent for a machine to make them. He sold his company to Nabisco in 1928, and they still make ice cream cones today.
The ice cream cone continues to be a popular treat for children and adults alike. More flavors of ice cream continue to be made available to please our palates, too!

What is a baby mouse called?
Joey Tadpole
Kit Pinkie
Baby mice and rats are referred to as pups, but they are also sometimes called pinkies, likely a reference to their coloring at birth. Because they have little to no fur, their pink skin is evident early in life.

September 23rd Celebrated History
1845
The first organized baseball team is named the New York Knickerbockers. Thirty-six years before, the knickerbocker word became popular for describing New Yorkers and the style of pants worn by boys – short and tucked in at the knee – when author Washington Irving wrote the satirical book A History of New York from the Beginning of the World to the end of the Dutch Dynasty. The Manhattan-based baseball team was the first to use it for a sports team. However, the name would later apply to the New York basketball team now known as the Knicks.
1848
John Curtis begins selling the first commercially available chewing gum. His product, State of Maine Pure Spruce Gum, would later be joined by flavors named American Flag, Yankee Spruce, White Mountain, Biggest and Best.
1889
Long before Mario the plumber made his appearance, Fusajiro Yamauchi founded Nintendo Koppai, later named Nintendo Company, Limited. The business originally produced playing cards. However, it also dabbled in other businesses, including a taxi company. Does anyone need an Über or a Lyft?
1879
Patent No. 219,828A is granted to Richard S. Rhodes for his invention of an audiphone. The device improved the hearing of those with conductive hearing loss and is considered the first of its kind. While the device successfully transferred sound vibrations through bone, it was cumbersome to use. However, he later modified the invention, earning him a medal in 1883 at the World’s Columbia Exhibition in Chicago.
1911
The mail officially takes flight. Earle Ovington became the first airmail pilot when he carried the mail in his Bleriot “Queen” monoplane. His route ran between Garden City Estates and the post office in Mineola, New York.
1953
Entrepreneurs Norman B. Larsen, Gordon Dawson and John B. Gregory found Rocket Chemical Company. The company produced and marketed WD-40.
1969
The film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid premieres. Directed by George Roy Hill, the movie starred Paul Newman and Robert Redford.
1984
When the Detroit Tigers win 4-1 over the New York Yankees, Sparky Anderson became the first Major League Baseball manager to win 100 games in both the National League and the American League. He started his management career with the Cincinnati Reds.

Incredible capture of 1890's St. Charles Avenue. Love all of the men wearing those bowler hats. And, look at those old electricity poles! The building on far left corner was a cigar store. Now, the fabulous Rubensteins clothing store occupies that location. Note, the old St. Charles Hotel in the background. The building was the second St. Charles Hotel to stand in that spot. It burned in 1894. Place St. Charles occupies this space now & was built in 1984. *colorized*

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, August 19
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.
This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.
- Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Optional add-ons:
- Shrimp
- Crabmeat
- Chicken
- Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
Fun Facts:
- Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
- Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
- Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
- Our full menu is also available.
- Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.
We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

FALL RHYTHM & ROSES CONCERTS ANNOUNCED
Jon Cleary Kicks Off Star-Studded Line-Up for Friday Concerts
The Historic BK House & Gardens is offering music afficionados a special treat this fall with a new Rhythm & Roses Concert Series, extending the popular spring concerts into September, October and November. British-born, American funk and R&B musician Jon Cleary will kick off the series with a solo performance on Friday, September 27, at 6 pm. Cleary, an accomplished pianist, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and songwriter, will perform from 6-9 pm in the beautifully manicured BK House Parterre Garden, 1113 Chartres Street.
Rhythm & Roses, presented by BK house neighbor and benefactor James Douglas Hislop, will run through Friday, November 1, except for October 11, and will feature a wide array of popular New Orleans talents. The opening concert will be presented in part by NOLAxNOLA.
Future dates include:
October 4: Jason Neville Funky Soul Band
October 18: Helen Gillet and Rebelle Musique
October 25: Dusky Waters & Rachel Maxann
November 1: Jelly Joseph
Tickets are priced at $30 for nonmembers and $25 for BK members and are available at www.bkhouse.org. Food and beverages will be sold on site. Because beverage sales support on-going maintenance of the garden, outside beverages will not be permitted.
Concert-goers are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance due to anticipated popularity of the event and size of the historic setting. Limited seating will be provided; however, attendees may bring small chairs provided space allows.
Also in September, BK House will host the second annual Beautiful Spaces Symposium on Saturday, September 14, focusing on the legacy of gardens in New Orleans. The inspiring day will explore the rich history, design and cultural significance of the city’s gardens and will feature distinguished experts covering a broad spectrum of landscapes from formal parterre gardens to indigenous wild spaces. The program will run from 10 am to 3 pm, with coffee, a boxed lunch and closing reception. Visit www.bkhouse.org for details.
Dedicated to maintaining the historical treasure, the annual BK House Soiree in the Vieux Carre’ will take place on Sunday, September 29. The fundraiser will be held from 5-8 pm, featuring John Boutte in the Courtyard and Amber Rachelle & the Sweet Potatoes in the Parterre Garden and a delicious Sunday Supper by 12 Seasons Catering & Events. Co-chaired by Sarah & Marshall Hevron and Carroll Gelderman Zimmer & Emory Zimmer, proceeds from the festive event will support major restorations to interior plaster and masonry, as well as the BK Endowment Fund. Tickets start at $100, with various levels available for individuals and sponsors, and may be purchased at www.bkhouse.org.
