Dear Sea King Families,

I hope you are enjoying the long holiday weekend and finding ways to stay cool. This was a fantastic Week of Welcome for all of our Sea Kings.  We had daily lunchtime activities to encourage our students to get connected and involved at PVHS.  Students had an opportunity to engage with different groups on campus including our administrative team, counselors, college and career center, and teachers.  Some of our activities were fun and exciting, while others outlined expectations, support, and programs on campus.

Our students also completed a teacher-led activity focused on our theme for the year, Together, We Rise!  Students were able to discuss as a group what the theme means to them and create posters highlighting how we can come together as a Sea King community.  I will continue to emphasize with our students the importance of working together, supporting one another, and focusing on our collective community so we can foster a positive campus culture. We will be displaying the student-created posters around the school so please check them out next time you are on campus.

We are still having students leave campus at lunch who do not have an off-campus pass or are required to remain on campus due to their schedule.  Please help us by reminding your students that we are a closed campus for lunch. Again, our seniors do have the option to leave campus at lunch, but all other students in grades 9-11 are required to remain on campus at lunch time. For our 9th -11th grade students who do not have a 3rd and/or 6th-period class, students must have parental permission and an off-campus pass. For more information on the off-campus pass process, please have your student stop by the attendance office.

Let's be great this week Sea Kings!

Sincerely,

Dr. Trista Ramirez

Proud PVHS Principal

Welcome Week was a great success for our students!  They enjoyed daily lunchtime events, an activities fair, a schoolwide BBQ, and workshops all about PVHS.  Thank you to ASB, BTC, and Link Crew for their help this week.  A special thank you to all of the faculty and staff that supported our events this week.  We could not do these types of events without our amazing Sea King community!

Congratulations to Taj Whitehead for taking home the GOLD for the USA Team in the World Waterpolo Championships in Volos, Greece.

Mrs. Mindicino brought her English classes to the library to team up with our wonderful teacher-librarian, Mrs. Brockman for

Book Speed Dating. This activity is one of Mrs. Mindicino's favorites because it represents a creative and fun way for students to explore and build upon a love of reading. Students explored their "connections" with literary genres to find their first reading book of the year. The students had fun and the activity fostered a lifelong love of reading!

Keynote presentation by Rielly Alizabeth Wieners,

“College fit” is a common term in conversations about college, but hardly straightforward. Once students begin to ask “which colleges are a good fit for me?” they usually find that “fit” is a difficult thing to determine. Ms. Wieners will discuss the importance of investigating and embracing institutions that match student abilities, interests, individual needs, approaches to learning, goals, personalities, academic tastes, and more. We’ll wrap up with a brief Q & A.

Freshmen Parent Seminar:

Whether your student's path will lead to a 2 or 4-year college, a technical college, the military, or directly into the workforce, that journey has now begun! Please join Joanne Lewis, Director of the PVHS College Career Center, and Teresa Hoffman, Financial Aid/Scholarship Specialist, for a discussion on how to best support your student and help set them up for success throughout their high school experience in preparation for their journey beyond PVHS. This year matters more than most parents realize!

Your counseling department is looking forward to a great school year. We are excited to share some important dates in regard to adding/dropping classes and for the Class of 2023 to prepare for the upcoming college admission season!

Important Dates for Counseling

  • September 7 - Stanford Student and Parent Presentation
  • September 14 - Senior Parent Presentation at 6:00pm
  • October 7 - Last day to drop with no penalty
  • November 4 - Last day to drop with “W”

Parking and Driving Reminders

All students parking on campus must display a PVHS parking permit from the center mirror in their vehicle. If a student still needs a parking permit, they must fill out the Student Parking Application and submit it to the Student Store. A parking permit costs $20.

Students are not permitted to park in any spot behind the Main Office before or during school hours, Monday - Friday. Spots reserved for staff in the Main Lot are marked with a yellow stripe and are numbered. Any questions? Please see Mr. Hill in the Main Office.

Students and parents, let's work together to get to and from school safely!

Please remember to follow all traffic and pedestrian laws when traveling to and from campus. Keep our Sea King community safe for all!

Community Connections:  Opportunities for our Sea Kings

Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools Debra Duardo is inviting students to apply for the 2022-23 Superintendent Student Advisory Council. The Superintendent Student Advisory Council was formed to bring students' views into conversations and decision-making about public education. We are looking for a diverse representation of student voices to ensure we hear from students of all achievement levels, especially those with real-world experiences who want to see a positive change in education.

The Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council will include students from public high schools throughout Los Angeles County. They will engage in dialogue with Superintendent Duardo on educational equity, the quality of public education, student wellbeing and other topics of concern, advising her on key issues facing youth.

Students are currently being recruited to apply to serve on the advisory council. The group will meet virtually on a quarterly basis beginning Fall 2022 from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Interested students will need to complete an application. They will also be required to submit a parent legal/guardian consent form to participate.
