American Democracy's 250th Birthday: How Are We Doing?

David O. Stewart

10:30 AM Sunday, July 5

in-person and online at bit.ly/sundayservicelive

The hoopla over the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence can submerge serious questions that have always faced this untidy, often fractious, American nation. We should use this moment to investigate what the Founding Generation hoped for the nation they were inventing, and to ask whether those principles remain important to us, and whether we are honoring them.

David O. Stewart is a longtime Cedar Laner, a practicing lawyer, and the author of six works of history and five historical novels. A popular speaker and recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Washington Independent Review of Books, he honed his storytelling skills as a trial and appellate lawyer and newspaper reporter. His most recent book is The Democracy We Must Keep: Seven Founders, Nine Documents, and the Ideas That Shaped America. Copies will be available for sale after the service. Please Note: No Quiet Callings on Sunday July 5. Quiet Callings will resume on July 12.
