A community of Christian worship, well-being and service

     Social Distancing ~ Spiritually Connecting

The week of October 10 - Oct. 16

From the Rector

Dear Friends and Members,

This week we will celebrate the first baptism at St. Mary's since last January, welcoming Hudson Russell Palakiko into the Body of Christ. Whenever we celebrate a baptism, we renew our own Baptismal Covenant and recall that life in Christ is an ongoing commitment to God, to ourselves and to the church. Hudson's family is excited to celebrate tomorrow's event, but even more than this, they are making a commitment on his behalf to continue to support him in his Christian life, for life.

Whenever there is a baptism, the congregation promises, with God's help  to do all in our power to support the candidate in his or her life in Christ. I am struck by this as we think about all the ways our community has offered support to one another since the last time we gathered for a baptism. We have shown up online and in person for worship week after week. We have prayed for one another, offered meals, cards, prayer shawls, and phone calls. We have welcomed new members and many guests through our outdoor services. We have kept one another safe by wearing masks, social distancing and washing our hands. You have continued to support St. Mary's and all our members and friends with your time, your financial gifts and your prayers. This support has been crucial in keeping our community connected and strong. What a blessed community Hudson is joining.

Our scriptures this week have a theme of God's provision for God's people especially in feasting. Our feasting has definitely changed in recent months, but as we look back at this unusual time, we can recognize how very real God has been, blessing whatever we have offered. Thank you for all you do to support one another.

Blessings,  Jennifer+

Holy Baptism at Outdoor Worship

We will have a baptism as a part of our outdoor worship service this Sunday, October 11 at 10:30.
Please pray for Hudson Palakiko and his parents, Emma and Brian, as they prepare for his new life in Christ.

Worship Changes

Sunday Service Time -Knowing that many of us enjoy this brisk, colorful season, and that we do many other things outside in autumn, we will continue to gather outside Sundays at 10:30 until further notice.

Drive in and/or bundle up -  We want to encourage people to pack your cars with warm blankets, hats, gloves, and anything else that will increase your comfort and joy at worship. We will increase the amount of space for cars to drive-in for worship. Your leaders are always open to your feedback, so please let us know how to support you as the weather chills.

Indoor Worship - We are taking seriously the guidelines and safety precautions necessary to restart indoor worship. As with our outdoor service, we will not launch this ministry until we have a complete plan for safe and reverent worship for all who wish to come inside. We are working on it every week -- professionaly testing and enhancing our ventilation system, assesing seating options, and lining up ministry leaders who are comfortable and willing to serve.

Ministry leaders needed for indoor worship - As we prepare to return to indoor worship we need lectors/intercessors, Eucharistic ministers, altar guild, videographers, and sound system support.  If you would like to resume a ministry or begin for the first time, please contact the Rector
very soon. We can only resume indoor worship with the commitment of our members to serve in ministry.

Online Worship will continueWe are now offering our Sunday worship in real time on Facebook live. In addition, we post the recording on our Youtube channel as soon as it is available. The links are below and in each newsletter.

Daily Evening Prayer Online -
This is a wonderful new offering that can tether us to Christ and one another. We will begin offering Evening Prayer as soon as we have trained a sufficient number of leaders who can read and pray the office. Please contact Carol Brierley if you want to participate or lead in this ministry. Technical support is available!

The Collect for The Nineteenth Sunday After Pentecost

Lord, we pray that your grace may always precede and follow us, that we may continually be given to good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Drive-Thru Trick-or-Treat
St. Mary's is hosting a Drive-Thru Trick-or-Treat
on Saturday, October 31st!

To make this event a true success, we need at least 10 members to decorate a parking spot. This event will be for the kids and families of our community. Your parking spot can be decorated as simple or elaborate as you wish. We are also seeking candy donations. You can drop off bagged candy at the welcome desk when you come to Church on Sunday or at the office during business hours.

Please contact Marlo Pratt marlompratt@gmail.com if you are able to decorate a parking spot. Marlo will provide all the details you will need at that time.

This promises to be a fun community event for all, but especially the kids!  Please be a part of the...

Ministries Returning to St. Mary's Campus

St. Mary's ministry groups, if fewer than 15, are invited to return to meetings in the St. George's Chapel. Restrooms are available outside the chapel, but the rest of our buildings remain closed. We continue to offer beautiful space for you to gather outdoors. If you would like to schedule a one time or recurring meeting or ministry, please contact Karen Laroche, our parish administrator to learn about the guidelines and process.

All meetings and ministries must be scheduled and approved in advance.

Service

Your generosity makes all the difference as we continue to share the love of God in Christ during this pandemic.

Here are ways people are giving:
  • On our our web page you can  Give Online
  • Mail in pledge payments or financial gifts to St. Mary's Church, 324 E. Main Rd., Portsmouth, RI 02871.
  • Set up online bill pay through your bank.
  • As we re-gather on the lawn and from our cars for worship, there will be big, blue buckets at the welcome station, as well as around our property.  They are marked offering and you can give in the buckets.
Given the economic realities, we are sensitive to the potential financial changes our members may encounter. If, for any reason, you are not able to maintain your pledge, please contact the rector. This will enable us to adjust our income projections so that we can be good stewards of our resources.

If you find yourself in financial need, please contact the rector. St. Mary's has a discretionary fund, which is used by the rector to offer support for the needs of our members. Members contribute to this fund anonymously, and members may receive support confidentially.

Again, thank you for your generosity and commitment. Jennifer+
