Virtual Easter Hymn Project
SUBMISSIONS DUE BY MIDNIGHT ON TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 16
Once again, you—yes, YOU—are invited to be part of a video offering of “Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia!”—the tune known as "Easter Hymn." The video will resemble the virtual choir & congregation video of “O come, O come, Emmanuel” offered by this community last Advent, a video that was profoundly moving to many who saw it. No matter if you have no experience in choirs, if you think your voice isn't good enough, if you've only recently connected with Saint Mark's, or where you are physically located... your participation is needed!
In order to honor the ancient practice of suppressing Alleluias during Lent, we must record our submissions before Lent begins. For that reason, videos must be received by midnight on Shrove Tuesday, February 16. Easter this year falls on April 4.
Record yourself (either alone or with your household!) singing along with the "guide track" video. Then submit your video online. That's it! More detailed step-by-step instructions are found at this link.

Shove Tuesday Community Gathering and "Closing of the Doors" Liturgy
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2021 5:30–7 p.m., via Zoom
Let's COOK and EAT together on Zoom before saying farewell to our Alleluias! You are welcome to participate in any or all of the elements of this special evening. See here for more information and the link to join, when it is available.
5:30 p.m. • COOK TOGETHER
Inspired by the success of the Youth Group communal cookie baking event over Zoom, the whole congregation is invited to take their Zoom device into their kitchen to share the experience of making pancakes, the traditional meal for Shrove Tuesday. Hosted by the Youth of Saint Mark's, we will chat with each other, share our pancake making secrets and learn a few tidbits about the history of Shrove Tuesday celebrations.
6 p.m. • EAT TOGETHER
At 6 p.m., attendees will be separated into smaller "breakout rooms" for conversation and fellowship while eating.
6:30 p.m. • PRAY TOGETHER
The brief but powerful "Closing of the Doors" liturgy is completely unique to Saint Mark's. At 6:30, everyone attending the Zoom meeting will witness the transformation of nave space for Lent, and say a fond farewell to our alleluias, accompanied by hymns, scripture, and prayers. At this time, you are invited to "bury" your own alleluia scroll or banner.
Conclusion of the service
As palms are burned on the front patio, all depart in silence. At this time you are invited to prepare dirt or ashes for the following day at home as well.

BEGINS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 7 P.M.
The Mideast Focus Ministry will sponsor its eighth series of films focused on the story of the Palestinian people—but with a difference this year. In response to the U.S. apartheid-like parallels to Palestine in our own country, we will spend some evenings linking to Black Lives Matter and the story of Indigenous people in America. We will focus on various people at "the Checkpoint"—some who work to help Palestinians, and some who do not. Do join us in our (once again) virtual film series beginning 7 p.m. on Friday February 19! Subsequent events will be offered on Friday evenings, March 5 & 19, April 9 & 23, and May 7 & 21. See the complete scheduled here.

SECOND SUNDAY BOOK GROUP
Two Books by Phyllis Tickle: The Great Emergence: How Christianity is Changing and Why and Emergence Christianity
SUNDAY, MARCH 14, 1:00 P.M., via Zoom
We're reading The Great Emergence: How Christianity Is Changing and Why and Emergence Christianity, two short books by Phyllis Tickle. In a sweeping overview of church history, Tickle shows that about every 500 years the Church feels compelled to hold a giant rummage sale of ideas once held inviolable. The birth of Christianity from Judaism and the 16th-century Reformation are just two examples. But what emerges from these upheavals, although alarming then, has been a new, vital and more widespread form of Christianity, this book argues. We're at such a point now, Tickle writes, then goes on to discuss the multiple social and cultural changes that have led us to this point. What might the new emergent Church look like, and where might it be headed? To join the Zoom discussion, contact pmcelheran@comcast.net or deborahbrown2559@me.com.

CREATION CARE
Weekly Conservation Tip - this week from Dean Thomason!
What to do with old batteries and CFLs?
After seven years living at the deanery, Dean Steve Thomason noticed an accumulation of old batteries and CFL bulbs. Instead of placing in the garbage, he utilized one of the City of Seattle's recycling stations (also available in Bellevue) where the batteries could be reclaimed and recycled. "Kathy and I made a field trip of it—dropping off our collection south of the city then went to nearby Lincoln Park to hike a stretch of shoreline we had never done," said Thomason. "Of course, there are specialized recycling groups that will pick these and other items up from your doorstep (e.g., ridwell.org) for a fee. The point is—we want to avoid sending them to the landfill."
Would you like to be more involved in the work of the Creation Care Ministry at Saint Mark’s? Please join us at our next monthly meeting on Monday, February 8 at 6:30 p.m. Contact Marjorie Ringness to find out more!
