STEWARDSHIP MINISTRY
Cathedral Stewardship Season Begins:
ONE BODY—A CLOUD OF WITNESSES
OCTOBER 4 (LAUNCH) THROUGH NOVEMBER 8 (INGATHERING)
Join a community Facebook discussion:
THIS TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2020, 5:30 P.M. in the Community Facebook Group (highlights will be posted later in the week on the Cathedral website)
To the greater Seattle community, Saint Mark’s Cathedral provides a welcoming place to come in joyous times, times of sorrow, times to pray for peace, and as a beacon on the hill for justice. For many of us, both near and far, The Holy Box on the Hill is our spiritual home, where we come on Sundays, Holy Days, and special events to experience a faith community full of love and acceptance. This year, we have worshiped and gathered both physically at the Cathedral and through Livestream. We are living as One Body—A Cloud of Witnesses, both near and far.
The Stewardship Ministry invites all to join in a weekly reflection on the year and how St. Mark’s has knit all of us together into a community. We will host an informal sharing on Saint Mark’s Seattle Community Life during the Closure Facebook page. Each Tuesday, 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., a member from Stewardship Ministry will host and offer a brief reflection, and invite others to share. Please plan on joining us on October 6 at 5:30 p.m. on Facebook.Highlights will be posted on the cathedral website later in the week.
Look out for additional offerings from the Stewardship ministry throughout the month! Watch your mail next week for the annual stewardship mailing, and watch your email next Tuesday, October 6, for a special video invitation from Dean Thomason.
Generous Creator, who knits us together into one common life: open our eyes and hearts to your gracious hand at work in all of creation, so that, rejoicing in your glory, we may be faithful stewards of your gifts as One Body - A Cloud of Witnesses; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Indigenous People's Day
MONDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2020
In our ongoing work of taking up our responsibility for racial justice, we recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day on this Monday, October 12, knowing we are on the unceded lands of tribes who are still here, calling for rights and recognition. If you are interested in participating in work as a parish to learn and grow and engage in this area in the coming year, contact Re Knack at rknack@omwlaw.com.
In honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we reflect on the words Chief Seattle spoke in 1854: "This we know: all things are connected, like the blood which unites one family. All things are connected. For we did not weave the web of life: we are merely a strand in it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves."

MONDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2020, 5:30 P.M. watch party via Zoom; 7:15-8:15 P.M discussion via Zoom
Gather together online to watch and then discuss the profound documentary “13th,” filmmaker Ava DuVernay’s exploration of the history of racial inequality in the United States, focusing on the mass incarceration of African Americans. Scholars, activists, and politicians analyze the history of criminalization of African Americans and the intersection of race, justice, and the prison-industrial complex. If you’ve already watched the documentary, join us later at 7:15 – 8:15 on Zoom for a discussion of what this means for us, and what our responsibility is to work to change this system. Registration for both movie and discussion are the same, and are required here. Want to know more? Great article in The Atlantic here, and Ava DuVernay discusses the film with Oprah here.

POST-ELECTION BOOK DISCUSSION
Love is the Way: Holding on to Hope in Troubling Times—The new Book by Presiding Bishop Michael Curry's New Book
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2020, 7-8 P.M., via Zoom
Let’s gather after the election and talk about hope for the future in a real, Jesus-centered way! As the descendant of slaves and the son of a civil rights activist, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry's life illustrates massive changes in our times. In his new book, he uses the prism of his faith, ancestry, and personal journey to show us how America came this far and how to go a whole lot further. The way of love is essential for addressing the seemingly insurmountable challenges facing this nation today: poverty, racism, selfishness, deep ideological divisions, competing claims to speak for God. Let’s get some love going and talk about the PB’s charge and challenge together! If you’d like to hear more about the book, read here. Registration required here.

Salmon, Justice, and Community: A Perspective from Northwest Faith Leaders
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2020, 6 -7:30 P.M., via Zoom
Salmon are a Northwest icon, a species of great cultural, ecological, and spiritual significance. Author Timothy Egan once defined the Northwest as “wherever the salmon can get to.” In the Northwest, our regional identity is steeped in mighty rivers and the fish therein, and the connections we share run deep.
Join LeeAnne Beres and Rev. John Rosenberg of Earth Ministry to explore the sacredness of salmon and the orcas that depend on them. You'll hear about how the faith community is bringing people together to restore the Lower Snake River for the benefit of all, and have the opportunity to ask questions and put your faith into action.

Liturgy of Ordination to the Sacred Order of Deacons

A MESSAGE FROM BISHOP RICKEL
Please Don't Feed the Fears
"We all have gotten too comfortable with our own feelings about things, our own perspectives, without taking the time and energy it takes to search out the facts - even more importantly, attempting to engage those who may think differently from you."

A Season of Creation
SEPTEMBER 1–OCTOBER 4, 2020
Saint Mark’s and the greater Episcopal Church joins Christian churches across the world in celebrating the Season of Creation September 1 – October 4. From the Season of Creation website: “The Season of Creation is a time to renew our relationship with our Creator through repenting, repairing, and rejoicing together. During the Season of Creation, we join our sisters and brothers in the ecumenical family in prayer and action for our common home.”
For the Season of Creation 2020, leaders from The Episcopal Church, the Anglican Church in Canada, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada collaborated on a set of beautiful weekly devotionals to guide us through this season. Here’s the devotional for this fifth and final week of the Season of Creation, centered on the verse from Scripture: "The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul" (Psalm 19:7).

Finding the Holy in the Ordinary: A Virtual Mini-Retreat for Spirited Women
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2020, 9:30 A.M., via Zoom
God comes to us in many ways. Some of the most profound encounters though happen during simple, everyday life: cooking a meal, putting away dishes, folding laundry, or reading a bedtime story. Those ordinary encounters can be anything but ordinary. God is always finding a way to transform ordinary practices in unexpected ways.
On Saturday, November 7, the Spirited Women of Saint Mark’s will gather virtually for a mini-retreat to talk about ways God encounters us through ordinary life. Pre-gathering coffee begins at 9:30 followed by Morning Prayer and then reflection and renewal. We will end by 11:30 am.
To pre-register, please RSVP to Mary Segall or The Rev. Canon Cristi Chapman by Sunday, October 25. Participants will receive a retreat packet in the mail in advance. After you register, share a short reflection, photo, or video how you have encountered the Holy in ordinary life. More information is available here.

MISSION TO SEAFARERS
Knit a Cap for a Sailor!
The Mission to Seafarers is running low on their signature hand-knit hats to distribute to ship workers that come to the port of Seattle. Though cruise season has been interrupted due to the pandemic, cargo ships are still sailing and the Seattle Seafarers' Center, where our Seattle Service Corps also sends workers, is working to meet as many as possible in a safe manner. You can join Saint Mark’s Ministry of Worsted Wool in making watch caps for the Mission to Seafarers. Contact Barbara Erickson or visit this page for more information and a pattern – even if you’ve never knitted a cap before!
