THE EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

A Special Musical Offering This Sunday
Saint Mark’s Virtual Choir returns this Sunday, now with choristers from Saint Mark’s Choir School sharing the screen with members of the Cathedral Choir, Saint Mark’s Singers, and the Evensong Choir. The anthem is W.A. Mozart’s beloved Ave verum corpus . The video will be offered in the context of this Sunday’s 11 a.m. livestreamed liturgy. Special thanks to Heather MacLaughlin Garbes and Peter Garbes, for their generosity of time, talent, and spirit in compiling, mixing, and mastering this 3 minute video. It represents more than twenty hours of work on their part!
Something New for Summer Sundays!
Liturgical Changes
This Sunday and for a time this summer, Saint Mark’s will adapt the rhythms of its Sunday morning liturgy! This Sunday, the cathedral will offer a service of Morning Prayer instead of Holy Eucharist, harking back to the standard practices of the Church until the last generation. As is our custom each summer, we will continue use of the  Enriching Our Worship  rites with their expansive language, for both Morning Prayer and Holy Eucharist. But the combination of Enriching our Worship and Morning Prayer on Sundays represents a new expression of Sunday worship for Saint Mark’s Cathedral, not heretofore experienced in this form... AND it provides for an exciting new element of music! This Sunday the collected Saint Mark's Choirs will offer a pre-recorded virtual choir video (see above). Holy Eucharist will return August 2 at 11 a.m., and that evening there will be a special outdoor service (see below for more details).

Learn more about Morning Prayer at  this post on the cathedral website . Please contact the cathedral to tell us what you think of this liturgy, and what experiencing it from home was like for you.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Taking White Supremacy to Court:
The Charlottesville Case

TUESDAY, JULY 28, 5 P.M., presented by Temple De Hirsch-Sinai, co-sponsored by Saint Mark's Cathedral, Faith Action Network, and sixteen other local organizations and faith communities.

Integrity First for America (IFA) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to holding those accountable who threaten longstanding principles of our democracy—including our country's commitment to civil rights and equal justice. The IFA is backing Sines v. Kessler , the landmark federal lawsuit filed by a coalition of Charlottesville community members against the neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and hate groups responsible for the August 2017 violence. Trial is scheduled for October 2020.  This case has the potential to be a once-in-a-generation opportunity to bankrupt and dismantle the organizations at the heart of the far-right extremist movement of today. (Read a New York Times article about the complexities of the case here .) On Tuesday July 28 Temple De Hirsch Sinai will present an online forum with representatives from IFA, discussing the history and future plans for the lawsuit, and the broader context of hate groups in America. "Spirited Women" Summer Gathering

THURSDAY, JULY 30, 6–7:30 p.m., via Zoom

You are cordially invited to the next gathering of Spirited Women on Thursday, July 30 from 6-7:30pm. We will gather that evening (virtually) to reflect on the experience of and explore the spiritual practice of walking. Before then, you are encouraged to take a "meditative walk" and reflect on how God encounters you on the journey. Walk in solitude or socially distanced in pairs, in a park, on a trail, in your neighborhood, or in your home, where ever you feel comfortable. You also are encouraged to take a picture or to write a short reflection about your experience and then share it with us. We will put together a collage of experiences to share with one another.

Questions? Reach out to Mary Segall, mesegall@icloud.com or the Rev. Canon Cristi Chapman, cchapman@saintmarks.org .
Dedication of Memorial Benches & Outdoor Service

SUNDAY, AUGUST 2, 5:30 p.m, Cathedral lawn and via livestream

As was announced by a parish email recently, Saint Mark’s Cathedral will host a brief service of dedication and blessing of four benches that have been placed around the perimeter of the labyrinth on the front lawn of Saint Mark’s Cathedral, to be held on the first Sunday of August at 5:30 p.m. The benches have been given in loving memory of four long-time members of the cathedral who have recently died— The Rev. Canon Mike Jackson, Randy Revelle, Kathie Moen, and The Rev. Canon Timothy Nakayama. The Pacific Brass Quintet will offer musical selections as part of the gathering.

In-person attendance will be strictly limited, per current public health directives. At this time, there are still a few spots remaining! Attendees will be screened when they arrive, masks must be worn, and physical distancing must be observed at all time. If you wish to attend, you must register in advance, either by using the online registration system , or by phoning Erik Donner in the cathedral office. If you find that the event has reached capacity, please add yourself to the waiting list—you will be notified if and when additional places open up.

Tent City 3:
Community Update

Almost 50 people are have taken up residence at Tent City 3 at Saint Mark’s. Residents continue to settle in and are grateful to those who have already brought supplies to the camp.

Their greatest need now is for bottled water . If you are provide a case of water, TC3 residents would welcome that. TC3 residents also welcome deliveries of non-perishable food. Please note that perishable food is very challenging, since there is no way to keep it at an appropriate temperature. TC3 camp managers ask that only groups who have signed up in advance and coordinated with the camp directly bring perishable items.

The feeding ministry at Saint Mark's plans to provide a hands-free dinner at the end of July and August. If you are interested in participating in that, especially for August, please reach out to Chris Rigos ( crigos33@gmail.com ) or The Rev. Canon Cristi Chapman ( cchapman@saintmarks.org ).
Deliveries can be made to the camp in person or via mail (Amazon, etc.). Please bring donations to the front gate of the camp. Someone from the camp will meet you when you arrive and then take the donation. Wear a mask! We keep checking with the residents regularly and will keep you posted on urgent needs. You can can also view a list of general needs and a sign-up to provide a meal here . Questions or suggestions? Please reach out to Cristi, and thank you!

Creation Care Ministry: Update on the Cathedral Bees

Hive #2, located on the roof of St Mark’s Bloedel Hall, is bursting with activity. A lot of honey has been collected in both of the top boxes. It may make sense to split the hive before some of the bees “swarm” because it becomes too crowded.

Even though the queen can be hard to find, we have located her in hive #2 twice, thanks to the sharp eyes of Jaime, bee volunteer. Frankly, she is not very glamorous. If you look for a bee that is elegant and sparkling, that she is not. She has a rather plain-looking body that is just a bit larger and significantly longer than all the worker bees.

Resources to Support Protesters and Racial Equity in Western Washington

Cathedral clergy and staff have compiled a list of resources for learning about and confronting racism and white supremacy in ourselves, our community, and our nation. The diocese of Olympia has compiled an additional list here . We hope these resources provide support for the difficult work that we are being called to do to dismantle unjust systems, institutions, and ideologies and create a society in which the dignity of every human being is respected.
