Ministry Slide Show, 10:45 a.m.
Tune in a little early to the Sunday morning liturgy livestream this Sunday to view a special slide show, created by the wonderful Olivier Santos, presentation of photos from the cathedral's varied ministry groups in action! The presentation begins at 10:45 a.m. and will be accompanied by live hymn improvisations on the Flentrop by Canon Kleinschmidt.
|
Live Chat during Livestream Enabled
Beginning this Sunday, you will notice a box to the right of the video player on the livestream page, inviting you to participate in live chat during the service. Even though in "normal" times one would be discouraged from talking to your neighbors during a liturgy, this functionality is being offered to allow everyone send greetings, share the Peace, and interact with other participants from home, in order to feel more present and engaged with the entire worshipping community!
Know that you are in no way obligated to use this feature, it will not become visible until you choose to type in your name, and you may hide the chat at any time. If you do try it out, let any member of the clergy or Greg Bloch know what the experience was like for you; we will re-evaluate how it is working for everyone in the coming weeks.

AN UPDATE ON REOPENING PLANNING
|
|
A Message from Dean Thomason
An email from Dean Thomason announcing the arrival of the cathedral reopening plan went out earlier this week. His message begins:
"Even as we wait—with eager hearts but abundant caution out of care for each other—for the time when we can begin to reopen the cathedral building, members of Saint Mark’s Reopening Committee have been working hard to develop our Reopening Plan, so we’d be ready. I am very grateful to them. Although the time has not yet arrived to open the doors, I want to share with you that plan. Great care has been taken to pour through the research and advice of experts, the experience of other churches, and the guidance from the CDC and other bodies, while also abiding by the guidelines from Governor Inslee and Bishop Rickel...."
Read the full message here. More information, including FAQ, is available on the website here. Regardless of when the cathedral reopens, the livestream ministry will continue.

Ministry Blessing Sunday and Virtual Ministry Fair
THIS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, before, during, and after Sunday morning worship.
The building may be closed, but the ministries of Saint Mark’s are as vibrant in heart as ever. They are integral to our community—those fully in action during the pandemic and those that will be reenergized as we gather in person again!
Tune into the livestream a little early, at 10:45, to watch a slideshow of images of cathedral ministries in action in recent years. During the 11 a.m. livestream liturgy, Dean Thomason will commission and bless all ministries of Saint Mark's. That also includes everyone who participates—all of us—because worshiping together IS ministry!
After the service, Zoom into a lively online Coffee Hour for a special presentation on the ministry life of Saint Mark’s and preview of our new Ministry Guide, and talk together as we kick into our fall season!

CREATION CARE/FAITH FORMATION
Wonder in Creation: A Two-Week Series of Spiritual Practices in Creation
TWO WEDNESDAYS, SEPTEMBER 16 & 23, 7–8:30 P.M., via Zoom
How do you experience God in everyday life? How might your daily living itself be and become a spiritual practice? The Creation Care and Faith Formation ministries will jointly host a two-week series in September to explore how spiritual practices outside bring opportunities to encounter presence, connection and reflection. Each evening, a panel from Saint Mark's will reflect on their own experiences, and you will have time to share your own. We'll also introduce tangible ways to share in active spiritual practices and reflect on how they may nurture reflection and faith in our response. Join us to "Celebrate the Harvest" on 9/16. The panelists for the first session will be:
- Rob Reid
- Carolyn Blount
- Keiko Maruyama & Jamie Rubio
The second session, "Mindful Steps," will be offered on 9/23. For questions and to obtain the Zoom link, contact cchapman@saintmarks.org.

SAVE THE DATE!
St. Francis Celebration and Blessing of the Animals
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2020. TWO OPPORTUNITIES:
-
2:30–3:30 P.M.: DRIVE-IN PRAYER AND ANIMAL BLESSING (no pre-registration required)
-
4:30 P.M.: IN-PERSON OUTDOOR LITURGY ON THE LABYRINTH (registration required, and available via livestream.)
The Blessing of the Animals around the Feast of St Francis of Assisi has long been a beloved annual tradition at Saint Mark's. Starting last year, this was given its own dedicated liturgy on Saturday afternoon, on the outdoor labyrinth, surrounded by the beauty of the cathedral garden—and this will be offered once again this year. Like last year, the event will feature musical contributions by acclaimed Seattle musician James Falzone, and include prayers for healing humanity’s relationship with the earth, and for all the creatures who share the earth with us. All are invited to attend, with or without their animal companions. Following current guidelines, attendance will be limited, participants will remain masked and distanced, and advance registration will be required.
For those who do not wish to attend in-person worship at this time, a drive-through animal blessing will be offered earlier in the afternoon, with no preregistration required. Keep an eye out for an email invitation next week, including instructions on how to register!

The Radix Project Returns for the Fall
OPENING ONLINE PLENARY: WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 7 P.M., via Zoom (link to be announced)
GROUPS MEET: ONCE A WEEK FOR SIX WEEKS, BEGINNING OCTOBER 7
In January of 2020 we launched The Radix Project: Small Groups/Deep Roots. Over 150 people met together weekly for 6 weeks to study scripture, share stories, and pray for one another. Then, when the Cathedral closed in the Spring, 80 people met in small groups via zoom to study the Resurrection narratives in the season of Easter. This fall, you are invited to a third series centered around stories of Biblical surprise. New groups are formed for each series, and meet once a week online for six weeks, beginning the first week of October.
The theme for this series is “surprise." Surprise plays an important role in our lives; it is the substrate for hope. And Lord knows we need hope in these challenging times. Surprise alerts us to important guideposts for the journey. And we need one another as we make our way. Radix groups are designed to bring this all together.
The Opening Plenary will include a brief presentation by Dean Steve via Zoom, who will offer some theological reflections on the element of surprise in the Bible, and in our lives. This presentation is open to anyone, whether or not they are participating in the small group series. Learn more at saintmarks.org/radix. To sign up, please complete the online form; or, alternatively, you may contact Erik Donner in the church office: 206.323.0300 x217.

A Season of Creation
SEPTEMBER 1–OCTOBER 4, 2020
Saint Mark’s and the greater Episcopal Church joins Christian churches across the world in celebrating the Season of Creation September 1 – October 4. From the Season of Creation website: “The Season of Creation is a time to renew our relationship with our Creator through repenting, repairing, and rejoicing together. During the Season of Creation, we join our sisters and brothers in the ecumenical family in prayer and action for our common home.”
For the Season of Creation 2020, leaders from The Episcopal Church, the Anglican Church in Canada, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada collaborated on a set of beautiful weekly devotionals to guide us through this season. Here’s the devotional for this first week of the Season of Creation, centered on the verse from Scripture: "Lord, if another member of the church sins against me, how often should I forgive?" (Matthew 18:21).
