Who Do You Say that I Am? Christology in Daily Life with Canon Jennifer King Daugherty

SUNDAY, JUNE 20, 12:30 P.M., via Zoom. (Register in advance here to receive the link.)

Over time and across cultures, faithful people have understood Jesus the Christ in different, life-giving ways. Canon Daugherty will discuss some of these traditions, then will lead the group in exploring how our experience of pandemic has impacted our answer to Jesus’ question, “Who do you say that I am?” Canon Daugherty recommends reading these two articles in advance of her presentation:

  • "How Christians Interpret the Gospel" from Mythmakers: Gospel, Culture, and the Media by William F. Fore
  • "The Good, the True, and the Beautiful" from Jesus Through the Centuries by Jaroslav Pelikan

Register in advance here.
"Is EfM for Me?"—An Introduction to Education for Ministry

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 23, 7 P.M., via Zoom

If you have attended Saint Mark's for some time, you have probably heard about Education for Ministry many times—especially this time of year when registration for the upcoming session is open. If you are new to Saint Mark's, you might be hearing about EfM for the first time. But what it is really like to participate in an EfM class? What sort of work is required? What happens at the class meetings? Are there exams??? Please consider attending a Zoom forum on Wednesday evening, June 23, to learn all about what EfM is... and what it isn't! Sacristan Michael Seewer will be the host, and Saint Mark's team of EfM mentors will be the panelists. Join using this Zoom link.

20s/30s
Stairway Walks Around Seattle for 20s/30s

SUNDAY, JULY 11, 2–5:15 P.M, meet at Epiphany Parish, 1805 38th Ave. Pre-registration required.

Did you know that Seattle has 650 publicly accessible stairways? In the early 1900s, property developers in hilly Seattle would construct public stairways for convenience and to improve access to trolly lines. Now, these scenic passageways provide opportunities to discover off-the-path views through Seattle neighborhoods. Join with other young adults from around the Diocese of Olympia to explore and learn about different neighborhoods and Episcopal parishes within Seattle. The series begins July 11 at Epiphany Parish, exploring Madrona and Leschi—a 3-mile walk at an easy pace, with lake views and open green spaces. We’ll also have an opportunity to learn more about the parish, meet clergy and enjoy light refreshments after the walk. Subsequent offerings will occur on August 8 (Saint Mark's Cathedral and “The Olmsted Vision”) and on September 26 (St. John the Baptist and “Alki from Above”). Learn more and find the link to register here.
Second Sunday Book Group

SUNDAY, JULY 11, 1 P.M., via Zoom

We're reading The Language of God (2006) by Francis Collins, Director of the National Institute of Health. Collins' book, published the same year as evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins's The God Delusion, is indicative of the ongoing attacks religious beliefs were facing from some popular scientists and other religious skeptics. As a former religious skeptic, Collins takes on skeptics, those who are hostile to religious beliefs, and what he believes to be unscientific religious beliefs to argue that faith in God and faith in science need not be at odds with each other. Although not a recent book, it may still be relevant when the loudest voices in the rooms now seem to be deriding science, not religion. Collins is most famous for directing the project that mapped the entire 3.1 billion letter code of the human DNA, and for being Dr. Fauci's boss. To join the Zoom discussion, contact pmcelheran@comcast.net or deborahbrown2559@me.com.

SHARE/WHEEL's Tent City 3 arrived in the cathedral parking lot last Tuesday. They will be in residence for 12 weeks, departing on September 8. The site is currently housing approximately 35 people, substantially less than in previous years. Interestingly, only four of the current residents were living in the community when it was at Saint Mark's last year. Here are some views of this year's move-in process.

Contact seattlemideastfocus@gmail.com if you did not receive the survey, or with any questions.

Saint Mark's Cathedral's Statement of Lament and Commitment to Action
An ad hoc committee of the Vestry has been working for many months on a new public statement of our positions as a community at this moment in history, building on the cathedral's 2016 document Renewing Our Covenant as well as the Covenant to Root Out Racism written by the Bishop of Missouri and adopted by the Diocese of Olympia at its most recent convention. Please find the complete text, and watch Senior Warden Peter McClung's very brief (2-minute) video introduction to the document, on the cathedral's website here.
Saint Mark's Land Acknowledgment

You may have noticed in recent months more occasions when we have begun our worship or meetings with a Land Acknowledgment:

Saint Mark’s Cathedral acknowledges that we gather on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish People, who are still here, and we honor with gratitude the land itself and the life of the Duwamish Tribe.

Over the last year a Vestry-appointed ad hoc group has worked to develop the Land Acknowledgment we are now using. It was adopted unanimously by the cathedral Vestry in April of this year, and every group at Saint Mark’s—every ministry, every gathering, every committee—is encouraged to begin your time together with this Land Acknowledgment. The Vestry is committed to this action and many more as we seek to deepen our relationship with and support for the Duwamish People.

Read more here about the land acknowledgment and the actions Saint Mark's is taking to learn more and stand in support of local indigenous tribes and nations.
Evangelist Banner for Pentecost

The beautiful banner depicting the symbols of the four evangelists has once again been hung on the reredos for the season after Pentecost, as it has been each year since 2017. It is the work of local artist Margaret Hays—click here to learn more about this treasure and the woman who made it.
