The Rubric: Fall 2020 issue launches online
In continual publication since December of 1890, today The Rubric is Saint Mark's magazine-style publication, used to tell the story of the cathedral community to ourselves, the Diocese of Olympia, and the wider world. The publication of the spring issue was prevented by the rapidly changing situation, and so the new fall issue takes a step back and reflects in various ways about the unprecedented times we are living through.
The issue contains..
-
an essay on the Rite of Confirmation and "laying on of hands" by Bishop Rickel,
-
an interview with Jaime Rubio, our guest in Sanctuary, about his experience of pandemic isolation,
-
a report on the recent residency of Tent City 3,
...and much more. This issue will not be printed and mailed as a physical magazine. Rather the contents of the issue will be available online here, either using the Issuu reader interface, as a downloadable pdf, or as individual articles.

United for Good: An Interfaith Election Prayer Vigil
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2020, 6:30 P.M., watch live here or on the Saint Mark's livestream page
This event is co-sponsored by Saint Mark's, St. James Catholic Cathedral, Temple de Hirsch Sinai, First African Methodist Episcopal, and the Church Council of Greater Seattle
In this time of trial and struggle, as we confront challenges to our health, our civil society, and our body politic, we are at a crossroads of conscience. And though the voices of vitriol and extremism often resound loudly, it is the quiet resolve, the reasoned discussion, and the judicious wisdom of the good, the undaunted, and the hopeful that will see us through this crisis.
In the spirit of silent prayer and reflection that is too often obscured by the static of cynicism, local religious leaders will gather in Seattle’s St. James Cathedral at this unprecedented time. All are invited to join in this brief interfaith service of quiet reflection via livestream. On the cusp of the exercise of our most essential civil right, we ask you to embrace this moment of contemplation and connection, as we affirm the principles that transcend our differences, and the common cause that will bind the wounds of this Great Nation.

Mirabai Starr Returns to Saint Mark's
Renowned interspiritual teacher Mirabai Starr returns to Saint Mark’s on December 5 to offer a virtual workshop on loss, grief, and hope titled Luminous Night: A Spirituality of Loss, Grief, and Hope. She will share teachings from the mystics of various traditions that illumine the connection between loss, spiritual longing, and reframing the future. The teachings of the sixteenth-century Spanish saints Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross show us how we may approach the radical mystery that often accompanies loss and lament as a spiritual opportunity rather than as a problem requiring a solution. By engaging a contemplative approach, we cultivate an environment of emotional refuge and deep peace in which we can name and offer our burdens to the Holy One.
Our time together will include poetry and contemplative reading, deep dialog in small breakout groups, writing exercises, and a closing liturgy. We especially invite those who are grieving any kind of loss or those who find the holiday season a painful or difficult time. We will gather via Zoom. The event is free but pre-registration is required; register for the workshop here.

A Conversation with Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry and Dr. Catherine Meeks
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2020, 2 P.M. PST, via Zoom
You are cordially invited to join Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry and Dr. Catherine Meeks in a conversation regarding the work of the Absalom Jones Episcopal Center for Racial Healing as we celebrate its third year of service to the wider church. The conversation will explore the challenges facing us as we navigate the two pandemics, Covid-19 and racial unrest, with the intention of finding the best paths forward as we seek to demonstrate our love for one another through striving for peace and justice and respecting the dignity in everyone. Register through the link here.

Hear Me! Stand With Me!
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2020, 1:30 P.M-4:30 P.M., via Zoom.
Paths to Understanding, a local organization promoting inter-religious dialogue, presents this conversation with members of the African American and Indigenous communities, including The Rev. Rachel Taber-Hamilton, Rector of Trinity Episcopal Parish, Everett. Racism and prejudice harm people of many groups and divide us from one another. Often, we don’t fully appreciate the challenges that various groups are facing and so fail to work together for our common good.
Hear Me! Stand With Me! is an opportunity to hear the struggles of many groups through story, poetry, music and art, and learn what it means to stand with that group to create a better life for all of us. We are all in this together and our future are inseparably bound up with one another. Register here.

Noel House Ministry Update
For over 20 years, Saint Mark’s Cathedral has opened its doors to 30 women each night of the week. Now, the women who formerly slept on the floor of Bloedel Hall have a permanent home in the Central area of Seattle! The building is a former day care center and is named the Bunny Wilburn Home, and each woman has her own bed and space to keep belongings. What a blessing! Read more in the the full ministry update here.

Indigenous People's Day
MONDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2020
In our ongoing work of taking up our responsibility for racial justice, we recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day on this Monday, October 12, knowing we are on the unceded lands of tribes who are still here, calling for rights and recognition. If you are interested in participating in work as a parish to learn and grow and engage in this area in the coming year, contact Re Knack at rknack@omwlaw.com.
In honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we reflect on the words Chief Seattle spoke in 1854: "This we know: all things are connected, like the blood which unites one family. All things are connected. For we did not weave the web of life: we are merely a strand in it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves."

CREATION CARE MINISTRY
Track your Carbon Footprint
NEXT MINISTRY MEETING: MONDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2020, 6:30 P.M., via Zoom.
Did you know the Saint Mark’s community is working towards a net zero carbon footprint by the year 2030? Vestry, clergy, and staff are currently taking the first step to measure their carbon footprint at www.sustainislandhome.org. You can, too, and be part of the Saint Mark’s group so we can track our progress collectively. Take 5 minutes and follow these easy instructions to take the first step of measuring your household carbon footprint. Then see the suggestions of how to reduce your footprint. Information will be coming soon about ways to offset your remaining footprint. Working together, we can make a difference.
If you're interested in learning more about the Creation Care Ministry, join us at our next monthly meeting on October 12, 2020 at 6:30pm via Zoom. Contact Marjorie Ringness for the link to join.

EARTH MINISTRY
Salmon, Justice, and Community: A Perspective from Northwest Faith Leaders
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2020, 6 -7:30 P.M., via Zoom
Salmon are a Northwest icon, a species of great cultural, ecological, and spiritual significance. Author Timothy Egan once defined the Northwest as “wherever the salmon can get to.” In the Northwest, our regional identity is steeped in mighty rivers and the fish therein, and the connections we share run deep.
Join LeeAnne Beres and Rev. John Rosenberg of Earth Ministry to explore the sacredness of salmon and the orcas that depend on them. You'll hear about how the faith community is bringing people together to restore the Lower Snake River for the benefit of all, and have the opportunity to ask questions and put your faith into action.

If you’ve already watched the documentary, join us later at 7:15 – 8:15 on Zoom for a discussion of what this means for us, and what our responsibility is to work to change this system. Registration for both movie and discussion are the same, and are required here. Want to know more? Great article in The Atlantic here, and Ava DuVernay discusses the film with Oprah here.

POST-ELECTION BOOK DISCUSSION
Love is the Way: Holding on to Hope in Troubling Times—The new Book by Presiding Bishop Michael Curry's New Book
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2020, 7-8 P.M., via Zoom
Let’s gather after the election and talk about hope for the future in a real, Jesus-centered way! As the descendant of slaves and the son of a civil rights activist, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry's life illustrates massive changes in our times. In his new book, he uses the prism of his faith, ancestry, and personal journey to show us how America came this far and how to go a whole lot further. The way of love is essential for addressing the seemingly insurmountable challenges facing this nation today: poverty, racism, selfishness, deep ideological divisions, competing claims to speak for God. Let’s get some love going and talk about the PB’s charge and challenge together! If you’d like to hear more about the book, read here. Registration required here.

Finding the Holy in the Ordinary: A Virtual Mini-Retreat for Spirited Women
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2020, 9:30 A.M., via Zoom
God comes to us in many ways. Some of the most profound encounters though happen during simple, everyday life: cooking a meal, putting away dishes, folding laundry, or reading a bedtime story. Those ordinary encounters can be anything but ordinary. God is always finding a way to transform ordinary practices in unexpected ways.
On Saturday, November 7, the Spirited Women of Saint Mark’s will gather virtually for a mini-retreat to talk about ways God encounters us through ordinary life. Pre-gathering coffee begins at 9:30 followed by Morning Prayer and then reflection and renewal. We will end by 11:30 am.
To pre-register, please RSVP to Mary Segall or The Rev. Canon Cristi Chapman by Sunday, October 25. Participants will receive a retreat packet in the mail in advance. After you register, share a short reflection, photo, or video how you have encountered the Holy in ordinary life. More information is available here.
