The Rev. Canon Walter Brownridge, Theologian-in-Residence, Presents Howard Thurman’s Jesus and the Disinherited
Plenary prior to community book reading for Lent:
THIS SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1-2 P.M., via Zoom
follow-up book discussion:
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 24, 6:30 P.M.
Gather (via Zoom) on February 28 at 1 p.m. with Saint Mark’s Theologian-in-Residence, The Rev. Canon Walter Brownridge, for an introduction to acclaimed African-American religious leader and theologian Howard Thurman’s legacy. Canon Brownridge’s presentation leads off an invitation to read for Lent Thurman’s foundational work Jesus and the Disinherited, exploring the Gospel as a manual of resistance for the poor and disenfranchised. (You may recall that Canon Brownridge discussed Thurman in his sermon of January 17.) We will follow up on March 24 for an online discussion of the book together with Saint Mark’s clergy at 6:30–8 p.m.
|
|
Howard Thurman was a pastor, teacher, preacher, writer, and mystic. He played a guiding role in many social justice movements and organizations of the twentieth century. His writings formed the spiritual foundation for the modern, nonviolent civil rights movement and he was a key mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In Jesus and the Disinherited, Thurman interprets the teachings of Jesus through the experience of the oppressed and discusses nonviolent responses to oppression. Join the Zoom with Canon Brownridge here. Questions? Contact Canon Jennifer Daugherty at [email protected].

Exploring the Doctrine of Discovery with The Rev. Dr. Mary Crist, Indigenous Theological Education Coordinator for the Episcopal Church
OFFERED TWICE: FEBRUARY 28-MARCH 28; JULY 18-AUGUST 15. FOUR SUNDAYS 1-2:30 P.M., online (Be sure to scroll down the page for the next class is first is full.)
It’s not too late to register for the free session that’s just beginning! Read through the materials outlined for each week, then join the Rev. Dr. Mary Crist (Blackfeet/Amskapi Pikuni) for a conversation about the week's material.
Through your journey in a multi-media web quest, you will find out the thinking behind the Doctrine of Discovery, how it was justified by Christian church leaders, what happened to the people it touched, how it continues to affect Indigenous people worldwide today, and what hope there is for Indigenous people in the future. You will hear Indigenous voices again and again, something that is unusual in Doctrine of Discovery courses. You will learn how the connection with the land and with Creator has given Indigenous people the spiritual resilience we have today as survivors of the Doctrine of Discovery. This course will change your life and how you think of Indigenous peoples. Register here.

Cathedral Yoga Returns as a Monthly, Zoom-based Offering
MONDAY, MARCH 1, 5:30 P.M., via Zoom
Last year on March 1 the final Cathedral Yoga gathering of 2020 was offered on the altar platform of Saint Mark's. The following week, the class was suspended. Now, one year later to the day, Cathedral Yoga will begin again as a once-a-month live Zoom offering from the cathedral nave direct to your living room. Ministry leader Irene Beausoleil, a longtime parishioner of Saint Mark's and a professional yoga instructor, will lead the class. It will look different, but some things about Cathedral Yoga will remain the same as ever: a gentle, contemplative, and restorative practice, offered on a pay-what-you can basis (no charge to participate, but donations gladly accepted). All are welcome, regardless of skill level or prior experience—Irene will always adapt or modify elements when requested. Cathedral Yoga will be offered on the first Monday of each month, and future months could feature special guest teachers and musicians. Check out the Cathedral Yoga web page for more information, and use this Zoom link .

SAINT MARK'S MUSIC SERIES
Choral Evensong on the Third Sunday of Lent
Saint Mark's will offer Choral Evensong via livestream with the most singers permitted since the COVID lock down began in Seattle almost one year ago to the day. Twelve members of the Evensong Choir, fully masked and at least 9 feet apart in all directions, will offer a chant-based setting of the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis by Canadian composer Healey Willan; and Johannes Brahms' ravishing Geistliches Lied, Op. 30, a setting of Paul Flemming's prayer, "Let nothing ever grieve thee." Join with the choir in raising your eventide prayers and praises to God on the eve of the third full work week in Lent.

Compline Video Livestream to Resume March 7
When the cathedral building was closed for public worship one year ago, a video livestream of the Office of Compline was offered on the regular cathedral livestream page. While the Office has continued to be chanted at 9:30 p.m. in the nave and broadcast on the radio each and every Sunday, the livestream came to an end after the Feast of Pentecost, 2020. Now, with the generous help of several volunteers from the cathedral community, the livestream will resume on Sunday, March 7. Join in at 9:30 p.m., either on the cathedral's usual livestream page, or on the facebook pages of both the cathedral and the Compline Choir.

...and much more. Printed copies were mailed to parishioners this week—keep an eye on your mailbox. CREATION CARE
Creation Care Weekly Tip: Ditch Microplastics!
You may not be able to see them, but microplastics are small bits of plastic that come in the forms of beads, fragments, fibers and more. When they find their way into our PNW rivers, lakes, and ocean, fish and turtles can mistake them for a snack. In 2015, the US banned the use of microbeads, a form of microplastics that often showed up in toothpastes and face washes, but microplastics are still a problem because they can show up in other cosmetics, detergents, or products not included in the ban. Check labels and look for "polyethylene" or "polypropylene." Learn more about microbead pollution here or search for products here.
Thank you to everyone who completed the Creation Care survey! We so appreciate the interest in how the Saint Mark's community can address the climate crisis. We will be sharing a summary of the survey results soon.
Interested in hearing more about the Creation Care Ministry and being more involved? Join us for our next monthly meeting on Monday evening, March 8 at 6:30pm. Contact Marjorie Ringness for the Zoom link or to find out more!

The Absalom Jones Center provides tools and experiences that allow faith communities to engage in dismantling racism through education, prayer, dialogue, pilgrimage, and spiritual formation.
Sign up for this significant training, which is scheduled on many upcoming weekdays and Saturdays. Although there is no charge to take the training, pre-registration is required no later than one week in advance. Register here. (Note that Zoom classes are offered only until it is safe to meet in person again, as classes are filling up quickly, so sooner is better!) Questions? Contact: Canon Nancy Ross: [email protected].
