Youth Kickoff Meeting and Great Chocolate Chip Cookie Baking Extravaganza!
THIS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 7-8:30 P.M., via Zoom
As this unique school year begins, the youth of Saint Mark's will be invited to dig deep, goof off, wrestle with big questions, and learn to lean on each other—figuratively if not literally. Join us for our first event of the season to learn what is coming up this year from service projects to Bible study to confirmation. How will we be together when we can't be together? Let's talk about it.
WHO: All middle school and high school kids and parents (for some of the time) with Interim Youth Minister, Rebekah Gilmore and other adult leadership.
WHAT: We will all synchronize our cookie making and then let the parents finish the baking while the kids have their own time and parents bring us our cookies. :)
SUPPLIES: Please have on hand the ingredients & necessary utensils for baking already set out prior to the meeting, a mixer, and oven access with Zoom capabilities in the kitchen. Here is the recipe happening in Rebekah's kitchen that night.

REGISTRATION CLOSES SOON
St. Francis Day Celebration and Blessing of the Animals
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2020
TWO OPPORTUNITIES!
2:30–3:30 P.M.: DRIVE-THROUGH PRAYER AND ANIMAL BLESSING (no pre-registration required)
4:30 P.M.: IN-PERSON OUTDOOR LITURGY ON THE LABYRINTH (registration required, and available via livestream.)
DEADLINE TO REGISTER: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1—LESS THAN A WEEK REMAINS!
The Blessing of the Animals around the Feast of St Francis of Assisi has long been a beloved annual tradition at Saint Mark's. Starting last year, this was given its own dedicated liturgy on Saturday afternoon, on the outdoor labyrinth, surrounded by the beauty of the cathedral garden—and this will be offered once again this year. Like last year, the event will feature musical contributions by acclaimed Seattle musician James Falzone, and include prayers for healing humanity’s relationship with the earth, and for all the creatures who share the earth with us. All are invited to attend, with or without their animal companions. Following current guidelines, attendance will be limited, participants will remain masked and distanced, and advance registration will be required.
For those who do not wish to attend in-person worship at this time, a drive-through animal blessing will be offered earlier in the afternoon, with no preregistration required. You can read more about the event here, and can pre-register here:

Via livestream, join Dean Thomason and eight members of the Evensong Choir, safely distanced on the nave floor, in raising hearts and voices to God for the gift of all the holy angels: messengers, healers, guardians and warriors. Music will include Stanford's rousing setting of the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in B flat, and S.S. Wesley's beloved anthem, Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace.

A Season of Creation
SEPTEMBER 1–OCTOBER 4, 2020
Saint Mark’s and the greater Episcopal Church joins Christian churches across the world in celebrating the Season of Creation September 1 – October 4. From the Season of Creation website: “The Season of Creation is a time to renew our relationship with our Creator through repenting, repairing, and rejoicing together. During the Season of Creation, we join our sisters and brothers in the ecumenical family in prayer and action for our common home.”
For the Season of Creation 2020, leaders from The Episcopal Church, the Anglican Church in Canada, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada collaborated on a set of beautiful weekly devotionals to guide us through this season. Here’s the devotional for this fourth week of the Season of Creation, centered on the verse from Scripture: "I will be standing there in front of you on the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink" (Exodus 17:6).

Finding the Holy in the Ordinary: A Virtual Mini-Retreat for Spirited Women
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2020, 9:30 A.M., via Zoom
God comes to us in many ways. Some of the most profound encounters though happen during simple, everyday life: cooking a meal, putting away dishes, folding laundry, or reading a bedtime story. Those ordinary encounters can be anything but ordinary. God is always finding a way to transform ordinary practices in unexpected ways.
On Saturday, November 7, the Spirited Women of Saint Mark’s will gather virtually for a mini-retreat to talk about ways God encounters us through ordinary life. Pre-gathering coffee begins at 9:30 followed by Morning Prayer and then reflection and renewal. We will end by 11:30 am.
To pre-register, please RSVP to Mary Segall or The Rev. Canon Cristi Chapman by Sunday, October 25. Participants will receive a retreat packet in the mail in advance. After you register, share a short reflection, photo, or video how you have encountered the Holy in ordinary life. More information is available here.

The Wisdom School at Saint Mark's 2020-21 Season Announcement
Earlier this week, an email was sent to the community announcing the upcoming season of The Wisdom School, now entering its fifth year. The complete schedule may now be seen at saintmarks.org/wisdom, and the full season brochure can be downloaded as a pdf. Other events include visits by the teacher and theologian Belden C. Lane; author and therapist Dr. Hillary McBride (co-host of the well-known podcast The Liturgists); a men's retreat and a women's retreat; a capstone pilgrimage to Britain rescheduled from summer 2019; and more. In light of the ongoing pandemic, contingencies have been built in to the planning—events will be in-person, all-online, or blended as conditions allow. The Fall 2020 Ministry Directory — GET INVOLVED!
Two weeks ago during coffee hour the new edition of the Saint Mark's Ministry Directory was presented to the congregation. This document contains a broad overview of the many opportunities at the cathedral to get involved, make connections, and serve the cathedral community, our neighbors, and the world. This edition also indicates what is (and is not) happening in particular ministry groups during this time of physical distancing and building closure.
In addition, ministry leaders were invite to submit short informal videos introducing their ministry and inviting you to join in. They are posted throughout the same page as the directory. And as always, do not hesitate to reach out, ask questions, and try something new! Even if a ministry's activities are currently suspended, now is the time to learn more and get involved, wherever you feel called.
(And if you are a ministry leader who has not yet made a short video, it’s not too late! Contact Greg to find out more.)

The Mission to Seafarers is running low on their signature hand-knit hats to distribute to ship workers that come to the port of Seattle. You can join Saint Mark’s Ministry of Worsted Wool in making watch caps for the Mission to Seafarers. Contact Barbara Erickson or visit this page for more information and a pattern – even if you’ve never knitted a cap before!
