Live Chat during Livestream Enabled
Thank you to all who tried out the live chat during its debut at the during last Sunday morning's Eucharist! During Sunday services, you will now notice a box to the right of the video player on the livestream page, inviting you to participate in live chat during the service. Even though in "normal" times one would be discouraged from talking to your neighbors during a liturgy, this functionality it is being offered to allow everyone send greetings, share the Peace, and interact with other participants from home, in order to feel more present and engaged with the entire worshiping community.
Know that you are in no way obligated to use this feature, it will not become visible until you choose to type in your name, and you may hide the chat at any time. If you do try it out, let any member of the clergy or Greg Bloch know what the experience was like for you; we will re-evaluate how it is working for everyone in the coming weeks.

Special Parish Meeting—
Exploring Potential Uses of the St. Nicholas Building
THIS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 7 P.M. (NOTE EVENING TIME)
Earlier last week Dean Thomason sent an email to the cathedral community announcing that the Vestry has recently engaged a development consultant to assist us in exploring potential uses of the St. Nicholas building with a goal of advancing the cathedral’s mission and ministries. John Hoerster serves as the chair of a committee guiding this process. A summary report is available on the cathedral website.
On Sunday, September 20 at 7 p.m., Mr. Hoerster and Dean Thomason will share details of the process, plans for parish input along the way, and address questions folks may have at this early stage. There will be time in this meeting for parishioners to ask questions about the process as well. It is important to note that this is an exploratory process, authorized by the Vestry, which will unfold across the fall, and the committee will provide periodic updates to the parish at key intervals. An email with the Zoom link to participate was sent to cathedral email list earlier this week.

Wonder in Creation: Spiritual Practices in Creation
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 7–8:30 P.M., via Zoom
How do you experience God in everyday life? How might your daily living itself be and become a spiritual practice? For the final evening, a panel from Saint Mark's will reflect on their own experiences, and you will have time to share your own. We'll also introduce tangible ways to share in active spiritual practices and reflect on how they may nurture reflection and faith in our response.

- Sarah Elwood
- Robert Stevens
- The Rev. Earl Grout, Deacon
- Brother Paul Dahlke

YOUNG ADULTS
Night Prayer with the 20s & 30s Group
NEXT SERICE: MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 7 P.M., over the phone and (optional) in-person
The 20s & 30s at Saint Mark's will be hosting prayer together on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month at 7 p.m. This will be offered over the phone—the young adults decided that there were already too many videoconferences and Zoom meetings in their lives! Please email Canon Jennifer to receive the call-in information and liturgy for the service. Additionally, there will be an optional in-person gathering outdoors in groups of 5 or fewer to call in to our common prayer on the 4th Monday of each month. The Radix Project Returns for the Fall
OPENING ONLINE PLENARY: WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 7 P.M., via Zoom (link to be announced)
GROUPS MEET: ONCE A WEEK FOR SIX WEEKS, BEGINNING OCTOBER 7
In January of 2020 we launched The Radix Project: Small Groups/Deep Roots. Over 150 people met together weekly for 6 weeks to study scripture, share stories, and pray for one another. Then, when the Cathedral closed in the Spring, 80 people met in small groups via zoom to study the Resurrection narratives in the season of Easter. This fall, you are invited to a third series centered around stories of Biblical surprise. New groups are formed for each series, and meet once a week online for six weeks, beginning the first week of October.
The theme for this series is “surprise." Surprise plays an important role in our lives; it is the substrate for hope. And Lord knows we need hope in these challenging times. Surprise alerts us to important guideposts for the journey. And we need one another as we make our way. Radix groups are designed to bring this all together.
The Opening Plenary will include a brief presentation by Dean Steve via Zoom, who will offer some theological reflections on the element of surprise in the Bible, and in our lives. This presentation is open to anyone, whether or not they are participating in the small group series. Learn more at saintmarks.org/radix. To sign up, please complete the online form; or, alternatively, you may contact Erik Donner in the church office: 206.323.0300 x217.

Re:Turn—Online Liturgy for the Autumn Equinox from St. Luke's, Renton
THIS TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 7 p.m., on the St. Luke's Renton livestream page.
Celebrate the autumn equinox with Saint Luke's, Renton, at Re:Turn, a innovative online liturgy—complete with a live chat, digital interaction, and Zoom after-party. St. Luke’s seasonal liturgies began in 2016. Every solstice and equinox, these liturgies use music and poetry, ritual and movement to acknowledge the beauty of the natural world and the interweave of the seasons with our own spiritual lives. Experience visual art, chant, and meditation from many different cultures and genres. As for music, traditional hymns make an appearance in some form, alongside other songs not usually found in a church service—anything from gospel singers to banjo players to a cappella groups. All are invited to participate.
The autumn 2020 online liturgy will be, for the first time, a collaboration between St. Luke's in Renton, WA; St. Andrew's in New London, NH; and St. Andrew's by-the-Sea in San Diego, CA. You may RSVP on Facebook, if you wish, here. More information is available here.

REGISTRATION NOW OPEN
St. Francis Day Celebration and Blessing of the Animals
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2020
TWO OPPORTUNITIES!

2:30–3:30 P.M.: DRIVE-IN PRAYER AND ANIMAL BLESSING (no pre-registration required)
-
4:30 P.M.: IN-PERSON OUTDOOR LITURGY ON THE LABYRINTH (registration required, and available via livestream.)
The Blessing of the Animals around the Feast of St Francis of Assisi has long been a beloved annual tradition at Saint Mark's. Starting last year, this was given its own dedicated liturgy on Saturday afternoon, on the outdoor labyrinth, surrounded by the beauty of the cathedral garden—and this will be offered once again this year. Like last year, the event will feature musical contributions by acclaimed Seattle musician James Falzone, and include prayers for healing humanity’s relationship with the earth, and for all the creatures who share the earth with us. All are invited to attend, with or without their animal companions. Following current guidelines, attendance will be limited, participants will remain masked and distanced, and advance registration will be required.
For those who do not wish to attend in-person worship at this time, a drive-through animal blessing will be offered earlier in the afternoon, with no preregistration required. You can read more about the event here, and can pre-register here:

The Fall 2020 Ministry Directory — GET INVOLVED!
Last week during coffee hour the new edition of the Saint Mark's Ministry Directory was presented to the congregation. This document contains a broad overview of the many opportunities at the cathedral to get involved, make connections, and serve the cathedral community, our neighbors, and the world. This edition also indicates what is (and is not) happening in particular ministry groups during this time of physical distancing and building closure.
In addition, ministry leaders were invite to submit short informal videos introducing their ministry and inviting you to join in. They are posted throughout the same page as the directory. And as always, do not hesitate to reach out, ask questions, and try something new! Even if a ministry's activities are currently suspended, now is the time to learn more and get involved, wherever you feel called.
(And if you are a ministry leader who has not yet made a short video, it’s not too late! Contact Greg to find out more.)

Tent City 3 Departs the Cathedral Campus
|
|
|
Thank you for your remarkable support and care of Tent City 3 this summer. Tuesday afternoon, the encampment moved to their next location at Trinity United Methodist Church in the Ballard/Greenwood area.
Camp leaders expressed deep gratitude for the hospitality of Saint Mark's and the Capitol Hill neighborhood. Thank you for the water, jeans, can openers, meals, socks, foot care kits, and for all the other ways you offered care to our neighbors. You were the hands and feet of Christ even as you met and ministered to Christ in the encampment.
One of the basics residents continue to need in is water! If you are in the northwest part of town, consider taking bottled water to TC3's new location:
Trinity United Methodist Church
8500 14th Ave NW
Seattle WA 98117
You can find the latest information on TC3 and their current wish list on their website.

MISSION TO SEAFARERS
Knit a Cap for a Sailor!
The Mission to Seafarers is running low on their signature hand-knit hats to distribute to ship workers that come to the port of Seattle. Though cruise season has been interrupted due to the pandemic, cargo ships are still sailing and the Seattle Seafarers' Center, where our Seattle Service Corps also sends workers, is working to meet as many as possible in a safe manner. You can join Saint Mark’s Ministry of Worsted Wool in making watch caps for the Mission to Seafarers. Contact Barbara Erickson or visit this page for more information and a pattern – even if you’ve never knitted a cap before!

MEDICAL EQUIPMENT RESOURCE CENTER
Donate Your Unused Medical Supplies
This is your chance to clean out your closets while at home during COVID and wildfire season! The Medical Equipment Resource center has found new uses for wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes and other medical items in your home - the Tent City 3 residents are very grateful to receive items (and can be followed as they move from place to place) plus refugees in Jordan and the victims of the explosion in Beirut. We have a way of including medical equipment in a container being sent from time to time. Please contact Mary Segall (mesegall@icloud.com) to discuss receiving items. Many thanks.

A Season of Creation
SEPTEMBER 1–OCTOBER 4, 2020
Saint Mark’s and the greater Episcopal Church joins Christian churches across the world in celebrating the Season of Creation September 1 – October 4. From the Season of Creation website: “The Season of Creation is a time to renew our relationship with our Creator through repenting, repairing, and rejoicing together. During the Season of Creation, we join our sisters and brothers in the ecumenical family in prayer and action for our common home.”
For the Season of Creation 2020, leaders from The Episcopal Church, the Anglican Church in Canada, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada collaborated on a set of beautiful weekly devotionals to guide us through this season. Here’s the devotional for this first week of the Season of Creation, centered on the verse from Scripture: "My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better; but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for you" (Philippians 1:23b-24).

A Message from Dean Thomason
An email from Dean Thomason announcing the arrival of the cathedral reopening plan went out last week. His message begins:
"Even as we wait—with eager hearts but abundant caution out of care for each other—for the time when we can begin to reopen the cathedral building, members of Saint Mark’s Reopening Committee have been working hard to develop our Reopening Plan, so we’d be ready. I am very grateful to them. Although the time has not yet arrived to open the doors, I want to share with you that plan. Great care has been taken to pour through the research and advice of experts, the experience of other churches, and the guidance from the CDC and other bodies, while also abiding by the guidelines from Governor Inslee and Bishop Rickel...."
Read the full message here. More information, including FAQ, is available on the website here. Regardless of when the cathedral reopens, the livestream ministry will continue.
