UPDATE! Come to Sunday Morning Services without Pre-registration!
|
|
Earlier this week a message was sent out to the parish announcing that, in line with the most recent proclamation of the Governor, Saint Mark's is discontinuing many of the restrictions imposed during the pandemic. Pre-registration, screening upon arrival, and limits of number of worshippers are ending. Fully vaccinated congregants may discontinue masks and distancing, but there will be a special "distanced" section of the nave for those unvaccinated, or for anyone who wishes to remain masked and distanced during worship at this time. Please watch Dean Thomason's brief video message explaining these happy developments in more detail.

Mutual Ministry Goals Community Meetings
FIRST MEETING: SUNDAY, JULY 11, 2–3:30 P.M., via Zoom
Earlier this week a message was sent to the parish inviting all members of the community of Saint Mark's to attend at least one of the upcoming community conversation about the Mutual Ministry Goals recently adopted by the Vestry. The shared goals of Restorative Justice & Systemic Change, Creation Care & Carbon Reduction, and Innovative Intergenerational Community are intended to inform every aspect of our common life at the cathedral, and the upcoming meetings are intended to explore how to put these goals into action.
The first, on Sunday July 11 at 2 p.m., will focus on Restorative Justice & Systemic Change. At the second, on Sunday, July 18 at 1:30 p.m. (note the earlier time), we will discuss worship and prayer at the cathedral, and how these ministry goals might inform and find expression in our worship experiences. The third meeting, on Sunday, July 25 at 2 p.m., will explore Innovative and Intergenerational Ministries. The final meeting, on Monday evening, August 9 at 6:30 p.m., will address Creation Care & Carbon Reduction. Again, anyone who calls Saint Mark's a spiritual home is encouraged to participate in any and all of these meetings. Read more here.

20s/30s GROUP
Stairway Walks Around Seattle for 20s/30s
Did you know that Seattle has 650 publicly accessible stairways? In the early 1900s, property developers in hilly Seattle would construct public stairways for convenience and to improve access to trolly lines. Now, these scenic passageways provide opportunities to discover off-the-path views through Seattle neighborhoods. Join with other young adults from around the Diocese of Olympia to explore and learn about different neighborhoods and Episcopal parishes within Seattle. The series begins July 11 at Epiphany Parish, exploring Madrona and Leschi—a 3-mile walk at an easy pace, with lake views and open green spaces. We’ll also have an opportunity to learn more about the parish, meet clergy and enjoy light refreshments after the walk. Subsequent offerings will occur on August 8 (Saint Mark's Cathedral and “The Olmsted Vision”) and on September 26 (St. John the Baptist and “Alki from Above”). Learn more and find the link to register here.

Second Sunday Book Group
SUNDAY, JULY 11, 1 P.M., via Zoom
In The Language of God (2006), Francis Collins, Director of the National Institute of Health, argues that faith in God and faith in science need not be at odds with each other. To join the Zoom discussion, contact pmcelheran@comcast.net or deborahbrown2559@me.com.

From Prisoners of Pandemic to Prisoners of Hope: A Day of Reflection on Being Church in our Emerging Reality
SATURDAY, JULY 24, 9:30 A.M.–12 P.M., in person in Bloedel Hall OR online via Zoom. Register for either here.
with The Rev. Canon Walter Brownridge, Saint Mark’s Theologian-in-Residence
“Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.” —Desmond Tutu
The past 16 months have been traumatic for many of us, and on so many levels. Pandemic, climate signs of foreboding, and a renewed cycle of racial reckoning. As COVID-19 recedes, in some way, we may feel divided. Some of us may feel that our energies are depleted, and others are eager to leave our isolation and enjoy the summer, and life returning to a sense of normalcy.
Yet, this may be a good time reflect and ask questions of meaning, faith, healing, and that big word: Hope. People in the midst of dark times, as the quote from Archbishop Tutu above notes, certainly need hope. I contend that we need hope when coming out of a difficult period and into the unknown. So yes, we must remain Prisoners of Hope. Together we will explore how hope is a muscle—that must be exercised as a spiritual discipline.

The Return of Cathedral Yoga: IN-PERSON and WEEKLY
BEGINS MONDAY, JULY 26, 6:30 P.M., and every Monday thereafter
From its launch in the fall of 2013 through its closure due to the pandemic, Cathedral Yoga offered a gentle, restorative, spiritual practice in the sacred space of the cathedral nave on Sunday evenings. Over the years, it became a valued resource to a diverse group of participants, from yoga newcomers to experienced practitioners. Following longstanding feedback from the community, Cathedral Yoga is now re-launching on MONDAY evenings at 6:30 p.m. Classes will be led by beloved cathedral community members—and certified professional yoga instructors—Irene Beausoleil and Wendy Townsend. (Guest teachers will return some time in the future.) As always, cathedral Yoga is offered on a pay-what-you-can basis. Questions, contact irene.beausoleil@outlook.com

Compline Welcomes Back an In-Person Congregation August 22
The Compline Choir and Saint Mark's Cathedral are happy to announce that the service will again welcome in-person worshippers beginning on Sunday, August 22. This later date was chosen due to the unique nature of the Compline congregation, the timing of the special Women's Compline Choir services, and other circumstances. Please come and be a part of this 65-year Seattle tradition.
In addition, to support the reopening of this service to the public, the cathedral and the choir are seeking volunteers to serve as Compline Hospitality Ministers. These ministers serve in teams of two, and play a crucial role in making Compline a welcoming and comfortable experience for all. Each team of two would serve about one Sunday per month. To learn more, please contact Cathedral Sacristan Michael Seewer (mseewer@saintmarks.org)

Cathedral Office Volunteers Needed
Cathedral office volunteers provide invaluable assistance to the day-to-day running of the cathedral, and now that the building is open once again are more needed than ever. Office volunteers spend a few hours each week at the reception desk of the cathedral offices, and are often the first face that visitors to the cathedral see. Other responsibilities include answering the main phone line and directing calls, and other office tasks as needed. If you're interested or know someone who might be, contact James Pannell, jpannell@saintmarks.org

CREATION CARE MINISTRY
Weekly Conservation Tip: Reduce Your Camping Footprint
|
|
Did you miss the training for the carbon tracker SustainIslandHome in June? No worries—a complete recording of the training is available here. Or use these instructions to create a profile for your household. Our goal is for our Saint Mark's community to have a net zero carbon footprint by 2030. The first step is to measure our footprint collectively, and then take actions to reduce it. If you need more help getting signed up to the carbon tracker, contact Ruth Mulligan at rmulligan@earthministry.org.
|
|
Creation Care Ministry member and Professor Emeritus of English Doug Thorpe was inspired by the recent EV charging station dedication to write a brief reflection on racial and environmental justice. Check it out here.
Interested in getting more involved? The regular monthly meeting of the Creation Care ministry is cancelled for July. The next meeting, on the evening of Monday, August 8, will serve as the Mutual Ministry Goals Community Meeting for Creation Care, led by Dean Thomason. All are encouraged to attend!

Saint Mark's Cathedral's Statement of Lament and Commitment to Action
|
|
An ad hoc committee of the Vestry has been working for many months on a new public statement of our positions as a community at this moment in history, building on the cathedral's 2016 document Renewing Our Covenant as well as the Covenant to Root Out Racism written by the Bishop of Missouri and adopted by the Diocese of Olympia at its most recent convention. Please find the complete text, and watch Senior Warden Peter McClung's very brief (2-minute) video introduction to the document, on the cathedral's website here.
