The Sunriver Library is Open! Don't Miss the Grand Opening Celebration September 14

The newly remodeled Sunriver Library opened its doors to the public in August, and were excited for you visit! Step inside and find more space for community gatherings, a new reservable study/meeting room, expanded browsing space, and new childrens and teen areas. And be sure to check out the Library of Things collection! You can get a look inside by checking out our Flickr photo album. Youll also find a video of the new space on our YouTube channel.


To celebrate, we are hosting a Grand Opening Celebration on September 14, noon to 2:00 p.m.

Following a ribbon-cutting ceremony, the public will be welcomed into the brand-new space, where well have free library swag, live music, a balloon artist, fun with the GlinWood Fae, and more.

September is Get a Library Card Month

Did you know that EVERYONE who lives in Deschutes Countyfrom newborns to centenarianscan get a free library card? If youre reading this, chances are you already have and use your card. But you can still share your love of libraries by encouraging friends and loved ones to get a card of their own! Sharing your story about why libraries are important is a great way to encourage others to take advantage of all the library has to offer. Tag us in your Facebook and Instagram posts, or email us your library story (newsletter@deschuteslibrary.org).

Festival of Voices: Sharing Similarities, Celebrating Differences

Spend time exploring the diversity of Central Oregon at the Festival of Voices on September 21 at Centennial Park in Redmond. Performances, cultural demonstrations, and food trucks will delight while tables hosted by groups and organizations will invite visitors to learn more about the communities that bring cultural richness to Central Oregon. The festival wraps up with an oath taking by new citizens. Deschutes Public Library’s Festival of Voices seeks to amplify the experiences that often go unheard from communities outside the dominant culture while educating the public about the diversity that exists within Central Oregon.

Celebrate Intellectual Freedom During Banned Books Week

Banned Books Week (September 22-28) celebrates the value of free and open access to information and brings people together in shared support of the freedom to seek and express ideas. Visit our Intellectual Freedom page to learn more about free speech and the right to informed thought, and check out this book list for a look at some of the most commonly challenged books.

There’s never a shortage of programs, events, and classes at your librarymore than 100 in September alone. Be sure to check out our new, more robust online calendar for the latest. The online calendar is also your go-to place for programs that require registration.

Beyond the Books: Scholastic Teachables

Its back-to-school time, and whether the classroom is in a school or at home, Scholastic Teachables offer lesson plans, activity sheets, mini-books, and writing resources that cover a variety of subjects from pre-K to sixth grade. Subject areas include math, reading, and language arts, as well as feelings and emotions, foreign languages, health and safety, and more. Access is free with your Deschutes Public Library card. Explore this helpful resource online, as well as other resources and services for students and educators.

Service Spotlight: Book-a-Librarian

Receive personalized service from an information expert who can assist you with your research, training, and speaker needs. With our Book-a-Librarian service, one of our professional librarians will be matched to your request based on expertise and availability. One local business owner recently used the Book-a-Librarian service to meet one-on-one with a librarian who helped connect her with small business resources as she worked to open a brick-and-mortar storefront. You’ll find her story on our YouTube channel.
