Dear Sunset Ridge Families,
With the start of the school year, we've had our first couple of mistakes and misbehaviors. This is a totally natural part of childhood, and a big part of what we are trained to help kids work through at school, but I thought I'd take a moment to share a few highlights;
* It is natural to make mistakes, and school staff can help kids work through those mistakes.
* We're hoping to help kids grow into people who can accept responsibility for their actions and, if they caused harm to others, try to find a way to "fix it" or repair harm.
* Being honest about what happened is a critical first step to taking responsibility for actions.
* We want kids to know that they can tell adults in the school if something happens and they should expect that something is done about it.
* We need to protect the privacy of others, so we can't often share (with parents or students) the names of others involved or what, specifically, happened as a result.
There has been so much good content in the last years with parenting advice. I hope to share some of that in these newsletters, but will start with this article about raising resilient children. And, for the record, I have been so impressed by the way kids have taken responsibility when mistakes have been made...nice job :-)
