A Message from Principal Wilfrid
|
|
Sunset Ridge Families,
Thank you so much to our PTA and the dozens of volunteers who helped with the Winter Tea and Book Fair on Friday! What a great turnout and beautiful event. It was lovely having families in the school.
Shifting gears, I figured I would let you know that MCPASD is in the thick of redesigning the report card. I heard about the "Celebrations of Learning" and the feedback that they received (mostly that it was too vague and didn't give a good sense of how a child was performing relative to grade-level standards). For those of you who shared those concerns, you'll be happy to hear that they're moving back to scoring student performance based on standards on a scale of 1-4.
Creating report cards is a tricky business, and there are a lot of robust conversations happening now. What is the right amount of information to give? Some parents want a lot of detail, some want a short-and-sweet summary. How do we honor the responsibility we have to report on academic achievement while recognizing the myriad ways kids show talents beyond academics?
This is an area in which we, as a nation, are behind. Research has been showing that there are better predictors of success than the "cognitive factors" like academic achievement (like grit or children's emotional health), and John Hattie, an educational researcher, likes to elevate how much students enjoy school because the best predictor of health, wealth, and happiness is not achievement but years of schooling.
Through that lens, the report card should be about us, not the kids!
Making a report card is tough, but we will welcome your feedback to make this newest iteration better!
