"You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think." originally said by Winnie the Poo. I love this quote and it comes to mind any time I see a new yogi beginning practice for the first time.
Yoga helped me find my strength. It also helps me see how everyone has hidden depths of bravery and strength within.
When Angela came into the studio for the first time she came in with strong and big energy. She was confident in her yoga practice and we instantly fell in love with her vivacious attitude.
Meet Angela; this is her story...
"My yoga journey began slowly. I have meditated for as long as I can remember before I knew to call it “meditation" and I’ve always needed that space to quiet my mind. When I was in my mid-thirties, I began my physical yoga practice at home, but my practice was sporadic and inconsistent for years.
When I was a teenager, I was raped, and that trauma led to an eating disorder that I still struggle with today. Eight years ago, I was in such a dangerously unhealthy state that I was admitted into the hospital and placed in an inpatient eating disorders program where I remained for six weeks. Yoga was part of the healing process.
For several years, yoga was the only physical activity I was allowed to do, but I quickly discovered that I needed the mental and spiritual aspects of yoga even more than the asanas. Yoga connects the mind and body. It helps me stay focused on my breath and positive energy. Yoga reminds me that I am strong, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Yoga keeps me healthy more than anything else. Since being admitted into the hospital eight years ago, I have practiced yoga every day. It is an integral part of who I am. I am thankful for my yoga practice for helping me heal and remain healthy. I hope through teaching yoga I can help others find peace and health as well."
Angela's story is one of healing and finding strength within. Angela teaches yoga at Sunshine on Friday nights and Saturday mornings. You can find her doing ACRO yoga with her fabulous husband Gus or teaching English for MISD.
