A Message from the President/CEO | |
The summer months are upon us – and Sunshine Village continues to have GREAT days – although with the heat waves this summer - many of them have been inside!
I would like to extend my thanks to everyone in our community who continues to support our mission – as we begin a new fiscal year. We are now in the third year of our three-year STRATEGIC PLAN – and are focusing on strategies and measures for FY2026.
| |
Our four ORGANIZATIONAL GOALS will continue to drive us:
(1) Advance SSV as a “Premier Provider of Choice” by assessing, enhancing and offering innovative services that assist individuals to achieve greater independence.
(2) Ensure the financial stability of SSV with sound governance and strong leadership that strives for excellence while adhering to thoughtful policies, transparent practices, proactive planning and continuous improvement.
(3) Enhance service provision by investing in technology and infrastructure while ensuring that all environments are safe, welcoming and inclusive for all.
(4) Continue to be an “Employer of Choice” investing in our workforce through a competitive and comprehensive total rewards plan and professional development program, while emphasizing wellness and valuing work-life balance.
With our thanks is a commitment to our clients and their families and our community as a whole. The Directors on our Board are committed to achieving high levels of success – and management and staff are also steadfast – working hard each day to ensure that those we are so fortunate to serve continue to SHINE!
| |
THANK YOU for helping us do just that – and know that you too SHINE!

Growing Together: WNEU Occupational Therapy Students Partner with Sunshine Village
In April, Sunshine Village’s Knight Day Hab Program welcomed Occupational Therapy students from Western New England University for a four-week partnership focused on fun, friendship, and therapeutic growth.
Under the supervision of one of our Occupational Therapists, Dara, the students visited once a week as part of their Level I Fieldwork to lead engaging activities that helped clients build fine and gross motor skills, practice sequencing, and work on social goals like turn-taking and boundaries. Each session was thoughtfully designed to bring therapeutic benefits through hands-on fun.
| |
One week featured a gardening project, where clients cleaned out planters, added fresh soil, and gently placed flowers—boosting motor skills and teamwork. Another week offered seated yoga and dance, where clients moved to their favorite songs, including a lively round of YMCA.
The collaboration gave WNEU students the chance to apply their learning in a real-world setting while giving Sunshine Village clients additional opportunities to SHINE.

Bill’s Snack Cart Business Rolls Out at Three Rivers
What started as a pilot with John in the Casey CBDS Program is now a full-fledged business at Three Rivers - and Bill is loving it!
Officially launched in early July, Bill’s Snack Cart has quickly become a hit. He enjoys setting up in different areas of the program, sharing his offerings and connecting with customers. Recently retired, Bill was looking for a way to stay active and earn a little money - and now, he’s restocking regularly (with candy bars being a top seller!)
| | Agawam CBDS Clients Step Up to the Plate—and Into the Garden—to Help Others | | |
In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, Agawam CBDS clients Matt and Greg proudly joined Friends of the Homeless for a meaningful event titled “Planting Seeds of Hope.”
| Held in May, this community-driven day of service brought people together to support mental health awareness while giving back in a hands-on way. | |
Matt and Greg rolled up their sleeves to assist with campus cleanup and garden preparation, helping beautify the space that supports the shelter’s kitchen with fresh, homegrown produce.

Client Mangal represented Sunshine Village by throwing out the first pitch for a Miracle League baseball game earlier this summer.

Creative Movement, Meaningful Progress: Therapy That Engages and Excites
Clients at our Three Rivers Program put their strength and strategy to the test in a fun and functional Newspaper Race - a creative physical activity designed by our therapy team.
With newspapers taped to the floor and small weights at the end, clients used their legs to pull the papers forward, challenging their balance, coordination and problem-solving skills - all while having fun with friends!
| |
“Our newspaper races are a great example of what we try to do every day - disguise movement exercises as fun,” said Rose, Physical Therapist at Sunshine Village. “If clients see exercise as a game, they’re more likely to engage - and that’s a win for everyone.”
Dara, Occupational Therapist, added: “The races targeted lower body strength, coordination, and problem solving. Clients had to figure out how to move efficiently without ripping the paper. It was wonderful to see them cheer each other on.”
With laughter, movement and full participation, this was truly another GREAT day at Sunshine Village!

“I love coming to Sunshine Village -- it feels special to be here with my friends learning and experiencing new and exciting things.”

Casey CBDS Artist finds His Niche - and a New Fanbase!
Chris, an artist from our Casey CBDS program, recently showcased his anime-inspired drawings at a wrestling-themed Meet & Greet event at Zombie Hideout. The event featured Total Nonstop Action Wrestling star Moose - and Chris came prepared with a table full of his original artwork, including special anime-wrestler mashups made just for the occasion.
| |
Chris spoke with customers about his work, shared his creative process, and even made prints for autographs. “It felt good,” said Chris. “I got to meet Moose too - and he liked my drawings!”
Watching Chris SHINE at the event was a proud moment for his mom - and for all of us at Sunshine Village.
If you’re a business owner interested in partnering with one of our Artists with Distinct Abilities, please call us at 413-592-6142. Together, we can support creativity and provide opportunities for artists to thrive.

Sunshine Village Named an Honorary Kindness Club
A very special visit on June 6th from our friends at the Be A Friend Project turned into a celebration of empathy, creativity, and connection at Sunshine Village!
What began as a letter-writing project at Casey CBDS has grown into something much bigger—with clients from the Agawam CBDS and Day Hab Programs, Davis and Knights Programs and Three Rivers now participating in spreading kindness through the Friend Mail Program. For the past 8 years, clients have written heartfelt letters and created artwork to support young people impacted by bullying.
Jennifer, Executive Director of the Be A Friend Project shared:
“Sunshine Village has been sending Friend Mail since 2017—that’s a long time! Do you know how many lives you’ve changed? Just with your empathy, your kindness, your art, and your words—you’ve helped so many kids stay strong and reminded them that people care.”
As part of the visit, Casey CBDS client Jonathan accepted an 8-Year Friend Mail Certificate, surrounded by friends and staff who have supported his dedication to the project. Sunshine Village was also surprised with a donation to help defray mailing costs—and officially recognized as an Honorary Kindness Club!
We are so proud of everyone who has made Friend Mail a lasting part of the Sunshine Village experience. Thank you to Jennifer, Daniel, and Amy for celebrating this milestone with us—and for helping make it another GREAT day at Sunshine Village!
