A Message from Gina Kos, our Executive Director |
Although we are halfway through the 2024 calendar year, Sunshine Village uses a fiscal year for budgeting and planning purposes, which runs from July 1st through June 30th. And, July 1st is almost here!
With this new fiscal year upon us, we are planning for the second year of our three-year STRATEGIC PLAN, focusing on strategies and measures for FY2025.
Our four ORGANIZATIONAL GOALS will continue to drive us:
(1) Advance SSV as a “Premier Provider of Choice” by assessing,
enhancing and offering innovative services that assist individuals to achieve greater independence.
(2) Ensure the financial stability of SSV with sound governance and strong leadership that strives for excellence while adhering to thoughtful policies, transparent practices, proactive planning and continuous improvement.
(3) Enhance service provision by investing in technology and infrastructure while ensuring that all environments are safe, welcoming and inclusive for all.
(4) Continue to be an “Employer of Choice” investing in our workforce through a competitive and comprehensive total rewards plan and professional development program, while emphasizing wellness and valuing work-life balance.
This year, as part of our strategic planning effort, we are focusing on ENGAGEMENT and IMPROVEMENT. We will be engaging all of our stakeholder groups more fully – that means we will be communicating and connecting more with our clients and their families, our legislators, our funding/referrals sources, our community and our employees.
And we will be improving our services and our operations – enhancing what we are already doing and enriching our programs in new ways – all day habs, CBDS and WMS – as well as bettering our supporting operations, administration and maintenance.
As a supporter of Sunshine Village, we thank you! Because of so many people (including you) Sunshine Village, SHINES. Brighter days are ahead and we look forward to continuing to share our GREAT DAYS with you!

AN EXCERPT FROM GINA’S
MEMORIES AND MILESTONES SPEECH
|
Sunshine Village hosted the Annual Memories and Milestones Employee Appreciation Dinner this past May and it was a resounding success!
Gina thanked the Board of Directors, who have so fully supported the organization – Chair Ernest Laflamme, Vice Chair Steve Melnyck, Treasurer Peter Benton, Clerk Michael Siddall and members Marie Laflamme, Frank Stellato, Teri Szlosek and Debbie Schneeweis.
Her speech included the following excerpt: “This past year, we have continued to do the “big things” – we invested over $2 million in positions and compensation. That 17 ½ percent raise increased our entry level wage to $21 and most of you received $4,000 in bonus money. That’s not big stuff, that’s HUGE stuff!
The Board is proud to be able to help you plan for retirement – matching up to 4% in your 401K. And our paid time off package is generous.
June 28th will be here in no time, that’s another Appreciation Bonus Day, where many of you will be receiving $2,000 – and newer employees (after your introductory period) $1,000.
We also do the little things, giving out SHINE TIME and logo’d gifts…including the beautiful mugs on the table tonight.
There is more big stuff and little stuff to come – but that will all be surprises.
Because of so many people, many in this room, we – Sunshine Village – is full of brightness! Bright days are ahead, however, we have work to do as the external environment continues to create challenges for us. But we are strong – we are committed – and we will continue to SHINE.”

Sunshine Village was proud to assist the Western Mass Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) during their 2023-2024 Training Season. On May 23rd, a special ceremony was held at Litwin Lane to honor participants from Sunshine Village.
The awards ceremony brought together key figures in the law enforcement community hailing from cities and towns across the Pioneer Valley. Officer Cynthia Boyle (Law Enforcement Coordinator for Western Mass CIT-TTAC) coordinated the ceremony to celebrate the collaboration between Sunshine Village and the Western Mass CIT, highlighting ten Sunshine Village participants -- who were specially honored for their assistance and contributions to the training program.
| |
During the awards ceremony, South Hadley Police Chief, Jennifer Gunderson expressed heartfelt gratitude: "On behalf of the entire community, we appreciate you helping our police officers to do their job better. I know the work that you did wasn’t easy, but without your help, we wouldn’t have been able to do this, so I’m so thankful to you."
Sunshine Village participants who received Certificates of Appreciation were: Anthony Angeletti, John Barrett, Teearra Caldwell, Stephanie Gillslinger, Stephen Green, Robert Klenakis, Anthony Medina, Alexis Nunes, Anthony Parrish and Jonathan Scytkowski. In addition to the certificates, they also received Police Challenge coins. "Challenge coins show our partnership and friendship together," Gunderson explained.
A partnership that solidified the importance of community collaboration -- showing how crucial it is in creating a more inclusive and understanding approach to crisis situations, benefiting both the disability community and law enforcement officers.
