A Message from Gina Kos, our Executive Director |
As March winds blow away – we are left with the memories (which can be retrieved on social media!) of our clients who were recognized during Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Appreciation Month. We are proud of all of their accomplishments – and share in their joy at achieving success with hard work, commitment and their own personal ambition.
Now, we move on to April – with more celebrations during the month that is appreciation for people on the Autism Spectrum. We look forward to applauding the achievements of even more people – while simultaneously showing our gratitude to our community partners, business associates, neighbors and friends for their continued support of all that we do.
It wasn’t too long ago that we began celebrating April – as Autism Awareness Month. With our commitment to advocacy and promoting the abilities of people with disabilities, we moved to Autism Acceptance…and now, Autism Appreciation.
Thank YOU for sharing in our success! As an organization marking our 58th anniversary this year, we know that you continue to support us as we move forward – knowing that we are ensuring that our founders’ dream will remain alive for many more years to come. The tradition of care will endure – because you are helping us deliver on our promise of a GREAT day, every day.

Cooking and Communication Groups: Building Skills, Confidence and Community
At Sunshine Village, our Cooking and Communication Groups help participants build essential life skills, grow their independence, and connect with others in a supportive environment. Since launching last spring, these hands-on sessions have become a highlight for many.
Led by SSV's Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) Laura and Jodi, this innovative program fosters critical thinking and problem-solving through cooking. “If we don’t have a one-cup measuring cup, how many half-cups should we use?” Laura prompts, encouraging reasoning and adaptability. "Two," exclaims Veronica, a client.
|
Jodi uses visual recipes and job responsibility cards to engage non-readers and shy participants. “By using visual supports, we create an inclusive environment where everyone can contribute,” Jodi explains. These tools reinforce comprehension, sequencing, and problem-solving.
Through structured guidance, participants not only enhance their communication and reasoning skills but also build confidence. "Why do we want the cookies to be the same size?” Laura asks participants during a recent session. “You’d have to cook them for different times,” Lori replies. “And be careful--smaller ones don’t burn,” adds Veronica.
|
More than just desserts, the group accommodates dietary needs and accessibility. “We’ve made parfaits with folks who have dysphagia,” Laura explains, highlighting the inclusive nature of the program. Recipes are even provided in braille when needed, ensuring everyone can participate fully.
Camaraderie and teamwork flourish. Whether holding parchment paper for a friend rolling dough or offering words of encouragement, participants support each other.
Jodi also incorporates additional tasks, beyond cooking, to enhance life skills development. “During our sessions, we work on following directions, comprehension, math skills, sequencing, and fine motor skills,” she explains. Clients brainstorm recipe ideas and participate in the entire preparation process, making each session a comprehensive and engaging learning experience.
| Twice a month, Laura leads classes for the Knights and Three Rivers programs, while Jodi works with participants at the Davis and Agawam programs. Case managers and nursing staff work closely with the SLPs to ensure recipes meet dietary needs, making the experience enjoyable and accessible for all. By the end of the year, every client will have participated in at least one session, building confidence, independence, and friendships—one recipe at a time. | | |
