Volume 219

June 5, 2024

Lifestyle is our 2nd Circle of Competence within Senior Living Communities (SLC).

Lifestyle encompasses goals, patterns and risks in managing Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). This diagnostic term describes skills vital to independent self-care. Healthcare professionals use ADLs as an indicator of functional status, recognizing a person’s inability to accomplish routine tasks may diminish safety and Quality Of Life (QOL).

Regarding care continuum decision-making, an individual’s measurable decline in ADL capacity may predict the need for alternative living arrangements (independent vs. assisted), home health care and, ultimately, skilled nursing.

We aspire for hearing care journey participants to know the meaning and significance of words including sensorineural, vestibular, pinna, tympanic membrane, and cochlea or acronyms such as ABR, BTE, CI, ITC, and OAE. While being in sync can be helpful, the lack thereof is frustrating.

To demonstrate bona fide understanding and speak the language of SLC Executive, Wellness or Nursing directors, gain familiarity with ADL terminology and evaluative utility. Akin to patient-centric multilingual imperatives, regarding interdisciplinary collaborations, be sensible not siloed.

Basic ADL categories involve:

  • Ambulating (mobility) in getting around safely
  • Feeding and healthy nutrition
  • Dressing and personal hygiene

Instrumental ADLs require more complex thinking and organizational skills, comprising those such as:

  • Managing communication with others
  • Properly taking medications
  • Ability to navigate transport, whether via driving or other methods

How do hearing loss (HL) comorbidities and ADLs interlink? Among many ways, consider how:

  • Ambulating safely correlates to postural balance, which increases risks when HL-induced sensory deprivation lessens guidance from sound-related cues.
  • Managing interactive communication is difficult when one cannot hear and understand well.
  • Those with multiple comorbidities depend on many medications, which they need to clearly converse with healthcare providers or pharmacists about.

From Lifestyle vantage points, we aim to raise awareness that:

Volume 68 highlighted:

“As Early Birds, we begin with a logical Lifestyle focal point and daily highlight, mealtime conversations. While favorite foods are in good taste, our popular design poses a sensory question, “do you have a problem hearing in the dining room?”

“From years of experience, you recognize listening challenges in noisy environments are prevalent. While disconcerting for all ages, they are especially so for seniors starving for fun conversations. As versatile chefs prepare desired recipes, optimal hearing abilities set the table to fully enjoy dining routines. Whether independent or assisted living, ideally, residents’ pleasure with social interactions is a main course.”

“Typical formats and visible placements include:

  • Canvas artwork, with an easily read insert, visibly placed near the entrance of or inside dining room.
  • Eye-catching countertop displays at front desk, wellness center, or activity rooms
  • Inserts for in-elevator messaging bulletins
  • Inserts placed in residents’ mailboxes, akin to targeted mail without postage”

Beyond Dining Rooms, Psychosocial Challenges are righteous causes on our hearing-related Lifestyle menu, especially how social isolation relates to low mood or Depression.

“Blindness separates us from things,

but deafness separates us from people.”

— Helen Keller

Research from a cross-sectional study including 25,665 U.S. individuals aged 18 years and older indicates:

(HL = Hearing Loss)

“In a large nationally representative sample of U.S. adults, we observed an association between greater self-reported HL and increased odds of psychological distress. Compared with those with no HL, individuals with moderate or greater HL had approximately 2-fold greater odds of reporting psychological distress and using antidepressant or anti-anxiety medications and approximately 1.5-fold greater odds of seeking mental health care in the past 12 months.” 1
