Dear Brecksville-Broadview Heights City Schools Community,
As we approach the final few days of the 2017-2018 school year, I write with several important updates. A number of administrative changes are taking place effective with the 2018-2019 school year. Maggie Niedzwiecki, current Director of Curriculum, will be leaving the District to become the Assistant Superintendent at Lakewood City Schools and we collectively wish her well and continued success in her future. David Martin will be appointed in her place. Christopher Hartland will move into the Principal’s role at Hilton Elementary School and Colleen Toth will be promoted to Principal at Central School. The District is in the process of selecting a new Assistant Principal at Central as well. Everyone in the Brecksville-Broadview Heights City Schools should look forward with great excitement and anticipation to these new faces in new places. All the best to everyone, in their new respective roles.
Next, the District thanks the individuals who shared their input during the most recent online survey regarding the student dress code policy. To summarize, 74% of the more than 1,600 responses voted to make permanent the changes that were introduced during the PILOT period. Those changes include:
- Shorts will be permitted to be worn year-round
- Leggings/Yoga pants will be permitted with a fingertip length shirt
- Sweatpants will be permitted (worn at the waist)
- Athletic shorts will be permitted to be worn at fingertip length
The District’s planned evacuation drills have now all been successfully completed. I would like to thank the many individuals involved in making these coordinated efforts effective and worthwhile. Following each building’s respective evacuation, a debriefing session was conducted to evaluate strengths and areas-of-improvement in the future. Without question, performing such practice evacuations helped District leadership to closely observe the logistical considerations required in the event of an actual emergency. Additionally, the drills demonstrate the urgency the BBHCSD will maintain to keep current and active with safety and security protocols. Thank you to the City of Brecksville and the City of Broadview Heights Police Departments for your added support.
The District will continue its pursuit to be fully prepared with Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate (A.L.I.C.E.) Training, first beginning with administrators on June 5, 2018. The A.L.I.C.E. Training will continue at the regular Convocation Meeting for all staff on August 16, 2018, and last throughout the entire 2018-2019 school year on a building-by-building basis. Our intent is to use the upcoming school year to train all staff, with the subsequent 2019-2020 school year to educate students. More information on this training will be forthcoming in the near future.
Finally, next week will be our last, for the 2017-2018 school year and some important events will include our KICK-IT event, which takes place on Friday, June 1, 2018, at the Middle School and will feature food trucks and other games, fun and activities. Please be sure to join us. Commencement will take place on Saturday, June 2, 2018, at 1 p.m. at the State Theater at Playhouse Square. Congratulations to the graduating Class of 2018!
The seniors participated in their annual Awards Ceremony yesterday evening. Collectively, the Class of 2018 earned approximately $16 Million in total scholarships and grants, including $85,000 in local scholarships. The District is truly thankful to the local organizations for their support of our students. Once again, congratulations Class of 2018!
With any questions regarding the information above, please feel free to contact the District at any time. Thank you for your continued support of the Brecksville-Broadview Heights City Schools.
GO BEES!
Joelle Magyar
