Northwest ISD families and staff,
I know the news of our unsuccessful VATRE and potential class size changes next year came as unwelcome news this week, but please do not get discouraged. While the overall outcome of the election was disappointing, the support we saw from our community was incredible.
Though the VATRE was not successful, here are some facts about the turnout that I hope provide encouragement:
- More than 31,000 voters cast ballots in support of our students, schools, teachers and staff. In most election years, this would be double the total overall turnout.
- More than 75% of our staff cast ballots in the election.
- More than 68% of families with a child in NISD cast ballots in the election.
These are tremendous numbers, and while they unfortunately were not enough this time, it shows that we maintain a strong, supportive base within Northwest ISD. We were aware that passing a VATRE in a contentious presidential election with record turnout and a significant number of disconnected voters would be a challenge; however, not making the effort for our students and teachers was not an option. We had to try.
I am very proud of the passion that our staff, parents and community members have shown for our schools. Now, all eyes are on the State Legislature and what action they will take in early 2025 during the 89th Legislative session. We ask you to join us and immediately advocate that our legislators prioritize public school funding and fully fund public schools in this next legislative session. The action (or inaction) of the legislature this session will directly impact our budget building process and the probability of calling a November 2025 VATRE election.
As we look forward to the budget planning process, we will consider ways to eliminate our $16 million deficit for the 2025-2026 school year. We will explore measures like what districts across the metroplex and around the state have taken in recent years. Our focus is on maintaining the high quality of instruction as well as the educational and extracurricular services our families expect.
