Northwest ISD Families,

The NISD Board of Trustees took a historic step this week – the school board accepted the Long-Range Planning Committee’s recommendation and called a bond referendum that, if approved, would build 12 new schools and fund renovations and additional facilities.

The district’s record-setting growth tells the story behind the 2023 Bond. Approximately 86% of the bond funds are for projects directly addressing the district’s enrollment growth. Projects to maintain and refurbish our current facilities make up 9%, with the remainder focusing on safety and security and technology. Following are some of the major projects in the bond package:
  • a new high school (near I-35W, across from Cabela’s)
  • a new middle school (in Northlake’s Pecan Square subdivision)
  • four new elementary schools (Perrin Elementary School in Wildflower Ranch subdivision, two sites along the 287 corridor in Fort Worth/Haslet area and fourth site determined by growth)
  • two replacement elementary schools (Justin Elementary and Prairie View Elementary)
  • four early childhood centers (repurposing the current Justin and Prairie View elementary schools, a potential site next to Cox Elementary and a site in southern portion of the district)
  • home stadiums at our comprehensive high schools (Byron Nelson, Eaton and High School #4)

Student enrollment growth and bond elections to build schools are not new to our fast-growth school district. However, the 2023 Bond is historic as we plan for significant enrollment growth. The bond package will accommodate an additional 8,400 students (the largest number planned for in the history of NISD bond programs) for a combined total of $1.995 billion.

Per state law, these bond projects will be presented in three propositions on the May 6 ballot:
  • Educational Facilities and Capital Improvements - $1.67 billion
  • Home Stadiums and Field Renovations - $301 million
  • Technology Devices - $21.7 million

If approved by voters, the three propositions represent a property tax increase of one-tenth of one penny to NISD homeowners. This increase equates to approximately $4.10 per year based on the average $450,000 property value of a home in the district.

I want to thank the members of the Long-Range Planning Committee again for their time and commitment to evaluate our district’s facility and growth needs and develop a plan that will take us into our future. Many committee members have been serving for several years, and this committee’s work is evident as we welcome each new student to a seat in our schools.

I encourage you to ask questions and seek information on how the 2023 Bond could impact you, your community and our entire school district. I understand the bond process is complicated and there is a lot of information embedded into the projects and three different propositions. We want to make sure you and our community are informed. Please visit www.nisdtxbond.org for more information and submit your questions here.

NISD Board of Trustees Election
Our trustees also called the General Trustee Election during Monday’s meeting. These district leaders serve three-year terms and are elected on a rotating basis. Places 5, 6 and 7 are up for election this year and will appear on the May 6 ballot along with the three bond propositions. For more information about the Trustee election, click here.

EXPO 2023: Be All You Can Be
I am looking forward to EXPO 2023 next Thursday, February 23. I’ve heard a lot of positive reports about our student presenters and their innovative ideas and presentations. The selected showcase participants are a small sampling of the amazing talent, inspiring teaching and creative thinking evident across our school district. I invite you to come experience our students and the learning happening in our classrooms.

Interactive sessions, demonstrations and student presentations will be held throughout the evening from 6-8 p.m. at Byron Nelson High School. We expect Expo to draw a large crowd, so please be patient with the parking process and know that overflow parking and a shuttle will be available at Medlin Middle School if necessary. I look forward to seeing you there.

As always, thank you for supporting your student’s learning and Northwest ISD.

Sincerely,

Mark Foust, Ed.D.
Superintendent
