May is Mental Health Awareness Month
As we embrace the beautiful month of May, and the fast approach to the end of the school year, it is important to recognize that it is more than just a time of blooming flowers and warm weather. May is also recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month, a global initiative aimed at shedding light on the importance of mental well-being and providing support to those who are struggling.
In today's fast-paced world, mental health has become an increasingly prevalent issue, affecting individuals of all ages, including children and adolescents. As parents, guardians, and educators, it is our collective responsibility to raise awareness and foster a supportive environment for those experiencing mental health challenges. Together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of our children and the wider community.
The theme for this year's Mental Health Awareness Month is "Breaking the Stigma: Together We Thrive." Stigma and misconceptions surrounding mental health often prevent individuals from seeking the help they need. By coming together as a community and breaking down these barriers, we can create a safe space for open conversations, support, and healing.
Here are some ways you can actively participate in Mental Health Awareness Month and make a positive impact:
-
Educate yourself: Take the time to educate yourself about mental health conditions, their signs and symptoms, and available resources. This knowledge will empower you to recognize potential struggles in your child or others and seek appropriate help when needed.
-
Encourage open dialogue: Create an atmosphere at home where your child feels comfortable discussing their emotions and experiences. Encourage them to express themselves without judgment and actively listen to their concerns. By fostering open communication, you can help them feel supported and understood.
-
Promote self-care: Teach your child the importance of self-care and stress management. Encourage healthy habits like regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and a balanced diet. Additionally, help them explore activities they enjoy and provide a nurturing environment where they can relax and unwind.
-
Advocate for mental health: Use your voice to advocate for mental health support within your community. Reach out to local schools, organizations, and policymakers to promote initiatives that prioritize mental well-being, such as increased access to mental health services and comprehensive mental health education.
-
Lead by example: Remember that children often learn by observing their parents and role models. Prioritize your own mental health and demonstrate healthy coping mechanisms. By modeling self-care practices and seeking support when needed, you show your child that it is okay to ask for help.
-
Support available resources: Take advantage of the resources available in your community. These may include mental health professionals, support groups, helplines, and online platforms that offer information and assistance. Familiarize yourself with these resources and share them with others who may benefit from them.
-
Be compassionate: Show empathy and understanding towards individuals who may be struggling with mental health issues. A little kindness can go a long way in making someone feel seen and supported. Encourage your child to practice compassion and to reach out to friends or classmates who may need a lending ear.
By actively participating in Mental Health Awareness Month, we can break down the barriers surrounding mental health, offer support, and foster a more inclusive and compassionate society. Together, we can create a world where everyone feels safe to speak up, seek help, and thrive. As parents and active community members, you have the power to make a lasting impact on your child's mental well-being. Let us join forces and work together towards a future where mental health is treated with the same importance as physical health.
Wishing you and your loved ones a month filled with understanding, support, and growth!

Great Things Happening At Our Schools
Carnelian had quite an exciting end to the week! Board President Brad Buller gave out staff appreciation gifts to Carnelian Staff as they began their morning with “Bagels with the Board." Carnelian had our last Flag Assembly of the 22-23 school year. We recognized our Cardinals of the Month and Carnelian Track Team!
|
Our Carnelian Kindergarten moms enjoyed a Kindergarten Boutique with their Cardinal students. There were lots of smiles as pictures were taken, crafts were created and sweet memories were made. Thank you to our Kindergarten team for creating this incredible experience for our students and families.

From Principal Curtis Quanstrom:

At the end of the year, there are many activities, field trips, and events for students and families to participate in and enjoy. Open House and the TK/K Alphabet Fashion Show are at the top of the list for many. The fashion show was a smash once again. Led by Mrs. Giron, Mrs. Growsky, and Mrs. Sulanchupakorn, our youngest Champions strutted their stuff down the red carpet, dawned in attire representing their letter. There was also a special guest in attendance, Superintendent Sherry Smith. She was easy to spot as she was smiling ear to ear enjoying the performance. |
Sandwiched in between the TK/K Alphabet Fashion Show and Open House, was the last PTA Association Meeting of the year. It was business as usual, but this meeting ended with the presentation of a very large check from the PTA to Jasper Elementary. Thank you to PTA President Shannon Walk and her team for all of their hard work, and to all of the Jasper families for their generous donations.
| Open House was the headliner of this grand evening. Students guided their families through their classrooms showing off their hard work. The classrooms were alive with students showing off their projects, art work, and assignments. Every classroom was a showcase. What a night this was for Jasper Elementary. | |
The end of the year brings many special events on campus. Board Member Eric Chung and Superintendent Smith joined us to watch our Superstars perform at our Annual Choral Concerts with Mrs. DiSchiavi. We are so proud of our students for singing their hearts out and putting on a brilliant show. Thank you to all the families who could join us. Great job Superstars! A special shout out to Mrs. DiSchiavi for her outstanding music instruction.
This year we celebrated 50 amazing students, from 2nd to 6th grade, who read over a million words using our Accelerated Reader program. Our PFSA planned, organized, and provided our Millionaire Lunch with a field trip to Bowlero. We have a fun afternoon of bowling, pizza, and dessert to celebrate their hard work. Each student has a banner proudly posted on our library wall for the entire school to view. Way to go, Superstars! Keep reading! Thank you PFSA!

Alta Loma Junior High
From Principal Andrew Carter:
|
It has been a busy time of year! Last week, the entire staff was treated to some special gifts by the School Board, PTSA, parents, and site administrators. The work that the teachers and staff do to make Alta Loma Junior High the premier junior high in the county goes beyond what words or gifts can offer, yet we did both. We appreciate them so much!
We held ASB elections for our 2023-2024 school year, competed against Vineyard in a Scholarship Bowl, and held our traditional Warrior of the Trimester Awards assembly to honor some outstanding 7th and 8th graders. Additionally, we held our Positive Conferences, which allowed teachers to personally recognize individual students for growth, achievement, progress, amongst other things.
| |
Sometimes good things have to come to an end. We had the opportunity to get together to honor and recognize two Alta Loma Junior High School legends that will be retiring at the conclusion of this year: Mr. Burke and Mr. Kwinn. They have each had a tremendous impact on students, staff, and community. We will all miss them more than words can express. Thank you both for always doing right by kids. We love you.
Lastly, thank you to all our Warrior Families for your support, dedication, and encouragement. We are better together. #commUNITY

It has been great seeing the students have so much fun during the last two full weeks of the 2022/23 school year. Our sixth-grade students had an amazing time at Camp Pali last week. They definitely brought their courage up the mountain as they taunted gravity through the intertwining ropes courses. The rest of the students had their own mountain to climb as Alta Loma Elementary was able to enjoy their first choir performance in four years. A special thanks to Mrs. Dischiavi for all the hard work and an amazing outcome. Finally, we would like to say a special thanks to Ms. Terry Chiever, who announced her retirement last week. Thank you Terry for your 21 years of service.
