Dear Principal,
As a former elementary school principal, I understand the daily challenges of recess and the responsibility of keeping children safe on the playground.
Every day was a headache...and I knew something had to change.
So I created a plan.
Instead of reacting to problems after they happened, we focused on preventing them before they occurred. By improving playground supervision, clarifying expectations, and giving supervisors the tools and training they needed, we transformed recess into a safer, more positive experience for students and staff.
In my article, "Ensuring Playground Safety," I share practical strategies that any school can implement, including:
- 3 Steps Principals Can Take to Improve Playground Safety
- Legal perspectives of a playground Injury.
- A Principal's Responsibility for Playground Safety
- and some resources
If recess has become one of the most stressful parts of your school day, I encourage you to take a few minutes to read the article. Even implementing one or two of these strategies can make a significant difference.
Students can suffer life-changing injuries on playgrounds, and school districts can face multi-million-dollar lawsuits as a result of serious playground injury cases. That’s why effective playground supervision training is so important. Proper training helps staff recognize hazards, actively supervise students, respond appropriately to risky behavior, and take proactive steps to help prevent serious injuries before they happen.
