California Mortgage Relief Program Raises Cap on Property Tax Assistance

MARTINEZ, CA –  Tax Collector's Office is notifying homeowners that the California Mortgage Relief Program has raised the limit for assistance with delinquent property taxes from $20,000 to a maximum of $80,000 per household.

This update comes as homeowners face upcoming property tax deadlines. To prevent delinquent property taxes and reduce additional penalties, homeowners must pay the second installment of their secured property tax by April 10, 2023. After this date, late payments will incur a 10 percent penalty.

Many Californians may still be feeling the impact of the financial hardships they endured throughout the pandemic. By increasing the cap on property tax assistance, the Program is continuing to act as a safety net for homeowners. If you believe you may now be eligible, please re-apply.

Homeowners who previously applied for property tax assistance have been notified that they may be eligible for additional funding. To receive additional assistance for property tax payments, homeowners must meet all other program requirements at the time of re-application.

In February 2023, the program expanded eligibility by allowing previously awarded homeowners who are still eligible to return for additional funds; including grants to reduce or eliminate partial claims or loan deferrals received during or after January 2020; resetting the delinquency date for past due mortgage and property tax payments to March 1, 2023; and expanding assistance to homeowners whose property has up to four units.

The assistance provided through the California Mortgage Relief Program is in the form of grants to eligible households which do not need to be paid back. While there is no strict deadline for applications, homeowners in need should apply as soon as possible at CaMortgageRelief.org.

Homeowners with questions are encouraged to call the Contact Center at 1-888-840-2594 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. They can also visit

CaMortgageRelief.org/help to learn more about resources and assistance available to them.

The CalHFA Homeowner Relief Corporation (CalHRC) is a special-purpose affiliate of the California Housing Finance Agency (CalHFA). CalHFA is an independent state agency that assists low to moderate income Californians by acting as the state’s affordable housing lender. Through CalHRC, the agency is able to disburse The American Rescue Plan Act’s Homeowner Assistance Fund (HAF) on behalf of the State of California given its extensive expertise in the mortgage assistance and homeownership space.

Input on Homeless Services Information Tools Sought

For 2023, the Equity Committee of the Council on Homelessness is focused on creating "accessible information, outreach, and educational materials to engage underserved and/or previously unreached communities in Contra Costa County so that people experiencing or at risk of homelessness have equitable access to housing resources and housing outcomes.”

To support this work, the Equity Committee has developed surveys for two groups:

Amplifierspeople/agencies/groups who may have contact with people seeking homeless/housing services and can help share out materials/information.

People With Lived Experience: people who have a lived experience of homelessness.

The surveys ask what people currently know about homeless services and what kinds of information and materials (communication tools) are needed about these kinds of services.

Did you know there are federal and state tax credits for working families? These credits are called the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the CalEITC, and they can put thousands of dollars back in your pocket. Workers with children under age six may also qualify for the Young Child Tax Credit (YCTC)—and receive up to an additional $1,000. Using an ITIN to file your taxes? No problem—for the first time this year, workers in CA with ITINs can also file for the CalEITC and YCTC.
