Ending Pandemic of Soil Erosion Starts with SWCDs

Most people will remember 2020 and 2021 as the time Hoosiers adapted to overcome pandemic challenges. From the vantage point of 2022, Bobby Hettsmanperger believes some attention should be directed to another pandemic: soil erosion. “We’ve been staring at it for a century, and we have bruises from running into walls fighting it,” he says.

The Passing of a Conservation Friend . . .
Fountain County SWCD Supervisor Lee Williams passed away on Friday, February 11, 2022. He served on the SWCD board from 1987 - 1995 and returned to the board in 2012. He was reappointed to another term in 2021.  In 1991, Lee and his wife Betty were recognized for their conservation efforts with the SWCD Outstanding Conservation Achievement Award.  In 2008, they received the River Friendly Farmer award. Read more...

NACD Honors National Award Winners at 76th Annual Meeting
Orlando, February 15, 2022 – Today, National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) recognized winners of its national service awards at the association’s 76th Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL. NACD President Michael Crowder, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Regional Conservationist for the Southeast James Tillman, and National Association of Farm Broadcasting (NAFB) President Spencer Chase presented the President’s Award, Hugh Hammond Bennett Conservation Planner Award, Hugh Hammond Bennett Conservation Producer Award, Olin Sims Award, National Conservation Districts Employee Association Awards, Friend of Conservation Award, and Distinguished Service Award to recipients during the meeting’s closing event.

February 15, 2022 - The Sentinel Landscapes Partnership, comprised of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of Interior (DOI) today announced three new areas designated as sentinel landscapes, one in Indiana, where natural and working lands thrive alongside military installations and ranges. These landscapes play a key role in strengthening the nation’s military readiness while addressing natural resources concerns like climate change and contributing to the America the Beautiful initiative.

Hugh Hammond Bennett Awards
2021 Recipients 
The Hugh Hammond Bennett Award is named in memory of soil conservation pioneer Hugh Hammond Bennett, the first Chief of the Soil Conservation Service (now NRCS) who led nationwide efforts to raise awareness about the critical importance of soil conservation and to help farmers recover after the Dust Bowl.

2022 Request for Proposals: Midwest Cover Crop Initiative
In partnership with ADM and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) is undertaking a new initiative to support largescale, voluntary adoption of cover crops across the Midwest. NFWF will award grants to organizations that will increase acres of cover crops in corn, soybean and wheat systems by providing farmers with technical and financial support.
