Chafee Lends a Helping Hand
|
|
The John H. Chafee Center for International Business at Bryant University invests in Rhode Island through federal, state and university programming, and it has a consistent record of success.
In the most recent statistics (from 2018), nearly 2,000 Rhode Island companies exported $2.7 billion of goods, supporting 133,300 jobs. These numbers represent a significant win for the state’s businesses.
The Chafee team has a number of tools to make it happen. The Center supports SBA-eligible exporters through the State Trade Expansion Program, while partnering with RI Commerce to both support exporters and attract foreign companies to invest in Rhode Island. Unknown to many, foreign investment in the state is an important piece of its economy. In 2017, 26,400 people were employed by affiliates of companies at least 50% foreign owned.
The Chafee Center also takes advantage of the brainpower of Bryant University’s International Business, Global Supply Chain Management and MBA students, as well as its faculty, to help local companies identify challenges and maximize opportunities through keystone Practicum projects.
Darlington Fabrics, A Moore Company based in Westerly, took part in just such a project during the spring semester of 2021. The company was looking at how to raise awareness of its sustainability efforts while also examining what their goals should be going forward. Darlington is looking to put one of the student team’s recommendations in place in early 2022.
