Program update: LOSS Teams

SAVE is developing a new community-based LOSS Teams initiative to immediately and compassionately respond to suicide loss when it happens. The program will launch later this year. LOSS (Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors) Teams of two or more volunteers who have experienced suicide loss will meet newly bereaved survivors at suicide scenes to proactively reduce isolation, combat stigma, and connect them with mental health services, counseling, and support groups.

"Our goal is to decrease the timeline it takes for survivors to receive these essential services," said SAVE Director of Education and Training Brittani Senser. "In collaboration with law enforcement and community organizations, we focus on timely outreach and postvention efforts to prevent further suicides and trauma."

The LOSS Team model was developed by Dr. Frank Campbell in 1998 after observing that it took more than four years on average for suicide loss survivors to reach out for support.

SAVE is seeking pilot cities for the program and suicide loss survivors to provide input and attend meetings every other month as part of the LOSS Teams advisory committee. If you are interested in getting involved, please email Brittani Senser at bsenser@save.org.
