Greetings!
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year at the Columbus Jewish Day School. I think we can all agree this year will be like no other for our children, teachers, staff, and families. Sarah and I are so excited to be part of the CJDS community as our children Ari and Cayla will learn and grow from amazingly dedicated and creative teachers who go above and beyond each day to inspire our children and provide a fully integrated curriculum.

It is a Ferrin family tradition each Friday night to go around the Shabbat table and express what we are grateful for. A consistent theme has emerged the last few weeks, with all four of us saying just how grateful we are for our CJDS community and for our teachers, staff, and administration who have gone above and beyond to make in-person learning a safe reality. CJDS needs our support to keep up the momentum. Sarah and I have donated to the #CJDSReadytoLearn Campaign and we hope you will join us. We look forward to support to make this a memorable school year.

Please give by September 30, in time for the high holidays, at a level that is meaningful to you. Together, we can send a powerful message that every family is committed to supporting CJDS during this time. We are going to continue to fundraise for the annual #CJDSReadytoLearn campaign, but we want to personally invite you to show your commitment to the school at this time.

Our families (you!) are a key ingredient to the success of CJDS. Sarah and I have been awestruck by how our parents and grandparents help in many different ways inside the building, but to mitigate the risk of COVID-19, we are asking for CJDS parents and grandparents to help in a different way this year.

Like all independent schools, Columbus Jewish Day School is dependent upon a strong partnership and additional financial support from our current and alumni parents, grandparents, faculty and staff, and our extended community friends. CJDS depends on fundraising to close the gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating each student. Tuition covers a portion of this cost. Our annual giving campaigns provide the rest of our operating needs.
With the recent pandemic, these costs to cover the gap is rising. According to recent data collected from Prizmah, the center of Jewish Day Schools, all Jewish day schools are feeling this economic change. The costs are up, net income is down, and enrollment is on the RISE.

The data from Prizmah shows:

  • Average increase in tuition assistance is $145,000.
  • Average increased cost from COVID-19 related expenses is $669 per student.
  • 65% of schools reported an increase in enrollment inquiries.
  • Nearly 60% of schools are projecting a decrease in fundraising.

Additional stats from Prizmah can be found here.
CJDS Back to School Stats Related to this Year:
  • Inquiries and Enrollment for grades K-3 are up from this time last year
  • Attrition going in to 2020-2021 was down significantly
  • Additional increase in tuition assistance per student due to COVID: $1,099
