Dear Terra,

When a woman flees domestic violence and begins rebuilding her life, it's crucially important for her to know that she has the heartfelt support of her community.

As part of Domestic Violence Awareness month, my office is co-sponsoring a donation drive, along with elected officials throughout DuPage County, to support Metropolitan Family Services and their partnership with LovePurse

The LovePurse program asks donors to buy new purses and fill them with daily essentials, toiletries, and (perhaps most importantly) handwritten notes of love, support, and encouragement. The purses are donated to organizations that serve women who are survivors of domestic violence.

We'll be accepting LovePurse donations through Oct. 31. Please call our office at 630-812-9292 or email Reptch42@gmail.com to schedule a porch pick-up at your home or a drop-off at our office.

You can also drop off donations at Ackerman Sports and Fitness Center, 800 St. Charles Rd. in Glen Ellyn and at Helen Plum Library, 411 S. Main St. in Lombard. You can check the graphic for a full list of drop-off locations in DuPage.

Please note that only new purses and new toiletries are accepted. All gently used purses will be donated to Goodwill.

Hunt for candy, dance, and get your free pumpkin at Lombard's Fall Fest SATURDAY

Do you know why this season is called fall? Because this is when the leaves fall from the trees. (The word "fall" is thought to come from the Old English words fiaell and feallan, which both mean "to fall from a height". Okay, I thought it was interesting. But we'll move on...)

In Lombard, fall means it's time for Fall Fest. From 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, the Lombard Park District invites you to Lombard Common, 433 E. St. Charles Rd., for a free event that will offer games, dancing, face painting, and a candy hunt.

From 12:30 to 1:30, there will be Boo Bingo inside the Lombard Community Building. You also can stop by the pumpkin patch and select your favorite pumpkin (one pumpkin per child). To learn more, you can click here.

You can start putting items at the curb now. Just make sure all items are placed at the curb by 6 a.m. Saturday.

Naperville survey asks our opinions on public art styles and locations

What kind of art do you want to see as you walk through Naperville? The City of Naperville is inviting residents, people who work in the city, and visitors (in other words, all of us) to take part in an online survey on public art.

From now through the end of October, you can share your preferences for public art styles, themes, and locations through this survey. It only takes a couple minutes, and it includes some interesting questions about how we think (and feel) about public art in our communities. The survey results will be posted on the city's website in November.

If you have questions about the survey, you can email portnerd@naperville.il.us.

To qualify, applicants must be organizations seeking to produce and promote a clearly defined festival, program or convention. Applicants are strongly encouraged to source goods and services for their event from Lombard-based businesses.
