Dear Supporter,

Discover Nikkei gave my family an opportunity to explore our family’s history and a platform to share our stories. I’m a proud supporter of Discover Nikkei and invite you to join me this Giving Tuesday to ensure this great resource is available for generations to come.
Yoneto Nakata married Yaeko Niikura in Japan in 1947.
My father, a World War II US Army veteran who served in the Military Intelligence Service, died when I was six months old. Wanting to learn more about him grew into writing about and for him on Discover Nikkei. Mom did not talk much about Dad when I was growing up. I only had a few old photos of him. But she saved his military documents, an old address book, a Japanese/English dictionary, and the American flag presented to her upon his death. My stories about Dad gave me a chance to preserve his memory, to share my emotions with others, and to comfort me from time to time.
It’s personal stories like mine and that of my husband, John, that make Discover Nikkei so interesting. I’ve written about my parents, family fishing trips, and celebrating Oshogatsu and my birthday during the COVID-19 pandemic. I’ve also contributed photographs of how I celebrate New Year’s to be included in Discover Nikkei’s Nima-kai Traditions photo activities. John has also contributed to several Nikkei Chronicles series, writing about how he helped me research about my Dad, coaching Little League baseball, and fishing with his father.
John’s dad at Pine Flat Dam near Fresno (1973).
Recently, we donated to Discover Nikkei. Join us this Giving Tuesday and make your donation today to ensure that this incredible project can continue to grow and will be available for future generations. Time is running out to donate this Giving Tuesday so make your gift today so that you’ll continue to learn Nikkei stories from around the world!
Sincerely,
Mary and John Sunada
