This is an exciting year for Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build. We are honoring Jane Hagedorn, a volunteer who has gone above and beyond for our organization and who has been part of Women Build from the beginning. Jane took on the immense responsibility of Project Manager of IVHFH’s very first Women Build in 2004. She took on this volunteer role while continuing to operate her plumbing business full-time. Jane has played an essential role in each and every Women Build project; from serving on the Women Build steering committee each year to providing plumbing labor with Bea Day Plumbers on every Women Build. In short, we simply would not be where we are today celebrating 29 years of building without Jane Hagedorn.
This year, the Jane Hagedorn Women Build committee is raising $50,000 to build a new Habitat home and an additional $5,000 to support a Helping Hands home repair. With the cost of construction materials and supplies at an all-time high, we need your support more than ever. The success of these projects ensure Women Build can support more families for years to come.

Mogahid and Rahma will move into the Jane Hagedorn Women Build home with their children Nadeen, Mohammed, Ahmed, Mohalab, Mustafa, and Moneeb. The couple, who moved to Iowa in 2014 through the Diversity Visa Program, says they wanted their children to have educational opportunities unavailable in their home country. Their daughter, Nadeen, says, “My main hope is this new house means we will get to stay in one place and will not have to move again.” After years of moving from rental to rental, the family will finally be able to put down roots in our community thanks to IVHFH’s Homeownership program.

As a baby, Tajiri was experiencing hair loss, breathing problems, skin irritations, and more, but it was difficult to determine what was causing his symptoms. Testing showed Tajiri suffers from several severe allergies. He continues to struggle every day and his allergies make it difficult for him to sleep most nights. Even after years of not having pets, the residual pet dander in the carpet and vent/duct system triggers Tajiri’s allergies. His mother, Geri, says, “If you have a situation where a child has severe allergies and is allergic to the home, what do you do? Not everybody can just move to another home. It really was a no-win situation.”
Funds raised by the Women Build committee and a generous donation of supplies, materials, and labor from Sobaski Abbey Carpet and Floor allowed IVHFH to replace the flooring and clean the HVAC system in the family’s home. Geri says the new floors have given her one less thing to worry about and Tajiri has already stopped sneezing and itching.

"For decades, it has been my privilege to support an organization whose mission is so dear to my heart, and critical to our community. I love working with our Women Build committee. We are a group of diverse women coming together to share our talents and leadership to raise the funds to build and repair these homes. I also enjoy volunteering on the build sites; it’s rewarding to share construction skills with others and to see what you have built become a home for a family. There are many ways to be involved with this project, but today I ask for your financial assistance. We need to meet a large portion of our $55,000 fundraising goal before construction begins this fall.”
Thank you!
