Support That Empowers

This edition brings together the most important ways we support individuals and families across Mercer County. You’ll find services that help with daily living, meaningful employment, safe and person-centered care, and stronger community participation. Whether you are seeking guidance, support, or opportunities to grow, our goal is to connect you with resources that respect each person’s needs and strengths. We remain committed to helping people build fuller lives with confidence, choice, and community.

A Message from our CEO

As we enter the fall season, I want to take a moment to thank everyone who continues to make MCAR a community where people are supported to live meaningful and fulfilling lives.

Thank you to everyone who attended our 9th Annual Steak Fry! With 230 attendees, this was our biggest success yet. It was wonderful to see individuals we support, families, staff, friends, and community members come together to enjoy an evening of connection and fun. We are already looking forward to next year!

Sunday, September 6, marked the beginning of Direct Support Professional (DSP) Recognition Week. Our DSPs play an essential role in helping people pursue their goals, make choices, build relationships, and participate in their communities. Their dedication and compassion make a meaningful difference every day.

MCAR continues to implement the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) E-Badge Academy, providing DSPs with opportunities to strengthen their skills in person-centered planning, communication, and individualized support. The program is available to all DSPs in our Residential Department, and we are also working toward having 100% of our Residential Managers certified by the end of the year.

Investing in our staff means investing in the people we support. By strengthening our knowledge and skills, we can continue providing supports that respect each person's choices, goals, and individuality.

Finally, please mark your calendars for our Annual Christmas Luncheon on December 7, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at The Avalon. If you would like to attend, please contact Ashley Reimold to secure your reservation.

Thank you for your continued dedication to MCAR and, most importantly, to the people we have the privilege of supporting.

Thank you for this opportunity to serve you,

Lyndsey Vogan, CEO

Global Diversity Awareness Month:

October Traditions

October is Global Diversity Awareness Month, making it a great time to recognize the different cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives that shape our community. Every culture brings its own traditions, history, and seasonal customs, giving our area its distinct character. Whether that means reading up on autumn celebrations like the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival or trying out a traditional dish like Spiced Pumpkin Soup, taking time to learn about experiences outside our own is a simple way to value the diversity right here around us.

Compliance Connection: Certified Investigators

At MCAR, our mission is to empower individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism in all aspects of their everyday lives. A vital part of this commitment is ensuring that those we serve receive the highest quality of care in a safe, secure environment.

To achieve this, MCAR relies on a team of Certified Investigators (CIs) trained through the Office of Developmental Programs (ODP). Guided by state protocols in the Incident Management Bulletin and CI Manual, our CIs conduct objective, thorough investigations into any allegations of abuse, neglect, and other significant events that occur in the lives of individuals we serve. The Administrative Review Committee then evaluates the findings to make final determinations and implement immediate corrective actions that promote the health, safety, and rights of the individual.

In-Home and Community Supports

In-Home and Community Support is a direct service provided in home and community settings to assist participants in acquiring, maintaining, and improving the skills necessary to live in the community, to live more independently, and to participate meaningfully in community life.

Timothy C. expressed an interest in volunteering in his community. With the help and support of his MCAR IHCS staff, Timothy found a volunteer opportunity at his local YMCA. Timothy enjoys helping at the YMCA by keeping the facility clean and organized . With staff assistance, Timothy is meeting new people, building social connections, and becoming more involved in his community.

Community Employment

MCAR Community Employment Department has recently started the second location for Pete’s Berry Farm Flower stand. We are currently selling Sun Flowers, fresh cut Zinnias, Marigolds and more. The flower stand is allowing our individuals a chance to learn employment skills like, customer service, money management, and maintaining the flowers. Staff and individuals have really enjoyed this new opportunity and we hope to continue this annually when the flowers are blooming.

Community Participation Supports

Growing, Connecting, and Engaging in Our Community

The Community Participation Support (CPS) Program is proud to continue serving a diverse and growing group of individuals across multiple service areas. Our programs are committed to creating meaningful opportunities for individuals to build skills, develop relationships, explore their interests, and actively participate in their communities.

At MCAR Day Program, we are fortunate to offer three distinct day program services: Older Adult Day Center (OADC), Adult Training Facility (ATF), and Pre-Vocational Services. Each program is designed to support the unique needs, goals, interests, and abilities of the individuals we serve. It is incredibly rewarding to witness the personal growth, skill development, independence, and accomplishments individuals achieve throughout their time in our programs.

Welcoming New Individuals

Over the past month, we have had the pleasure of welcoming three new individuals to our day program. Each individual has been adjusting well to their new environment, building meaningful friendships, participating in community activities, and developing new skills. We are excited to watch them continue to grow, gain confidence, and become active members of our program community.

Enjoying the Great Outdoors

With the arrival of warmer weather, we have enjoyed numerous community outings and opportunities to spend time outdoors. Individuals have explored local walking trails, providing an excellent opportunity for physical activity, fresh air, and relaxation while enjoying the beauty of our surrounding communities.

We have also been making great use of our Keystone Safari and Living Treasures Animal Park season passes. These outings provide much more than an opportunity to see and interact with animals. They encourage individuals to be active, explore new environments, practice social and community skills, make choices, and experience meaningful recreational activities alongside their peers and staff. These experiences also provide opportunities to learn about animals and nature while creating lasting memories together.

Celebrating Labor Day

As we celebrated Labor Day, individuals and staff proudly dressed in red, white, and blue to recognize the holiday. Everyone enjoyed a delicious cookout featuring hamburgers, hot dogs, buffalo chicken dip, pasta salad, and ice cream. The day provided a wonderful opportunity for everyone to spend quality time together, enjoy good food, and celebrate the friendships and connections that make our program special.

Virtual Adventures

While we have enjoyed getting outside, we have also made the most of our indoor activities during some of the extremely hot days. Using our virtual reality headset, individuals were able to experience exciting adventures without leaving the day program.

Participants had the opportunity to visit a beach, go scuba diving, and explore a rainforest through immersive virtual experiences.

Virtual reality provides an exciting way to experience places and activities that individuals may not otherwise have the opportunity to visit. It encourages exploration, curiosity, conversation, and engagement while providing a fun alternative when outdoor activities are not ideal.

Exploring New Opportunities

Looking ahead, we are excited for an upcoming field trip to the Kamin Science Center, where individuals and staff will have the opportunity to explore five floors of hands-on, interactive exhibits and engaging educational experiences. This outing will provide an exciting opportunity to learn, discover, and experience something new while enjoying time together in the community.

We are also excited to resume our partnership with Growing Together Aquaponics in Mercer. Individuals will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge through hands-on experiences while learning more about aquaponics, sustainable growing practices, and the importance of caring for plants and the environment. We look forward to building upon the experiences we have shared in the past and creating even more opportunities for learning, participation, and personal growth.

Staying Active in the Community

In addition to our educational and community-based activities, several groups will have the opportunity to participate in open swim at the Buhl Club. Swimming provides an enjoyable way for individuals to stay active, work on physical fitness, and experience the benefits of exercise in a fun and supportive environment.

Giving Back Through Volunteerism

We are proud to continue our volunteer efforts throughout the Mercer County area. Volunteering provides individuals with meaningful opportunities to contribute to their communities, develop a sense of purpose, practice important work and social skills, and build connections with others.

Our individuals take great pride in giving back and being able to make a positive difference in their communities. These experiences help demonstrate that everyone has valuable contributions to make and an important role to play in the places where they live and participate.

Looking Ahead

As we continue into the coming months, we look forward to creating even more opportunities for individuals to learn new skills, build friendships, stay active, explore their communities, give back, and achieve their personal goals. From outdoor adventures and educational experiences to volunteer opportunities and new ways of exploring the world, our goal remains to provide meaningful experiences that promote independence, confidence, connection, and personal growth.

We are grateful for the continued enthusiasm and participation of the individuals we support and look forward to all that the upcoming months have in store!

In Loving Memory

🕊️ Remembering Patty Knox

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Patty Knox on August 30, 2026.

Patty was a cherished member of the MCAR family whose presence touched the lives of many. She will be remembered for the friendships she formed, the moments of joy she shared, and the positive impact she had on those around her.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Patty's family, friends, and everyone who knew and cared for her. During this difficult time, we reflect on the memories we shared and honor the legacy of kindness and connection that Patty leaves behind.

"What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes a part of us."

Patty will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched.

Looking Ahead

As we enter the fall season, we remain committed to supporting individuals in achieving their goals, participating in their communities, and enjoying meaningful experiences. Thank you to our residents, families, staff members, and community partners for your continued support and dedication.

Together, we continue to build a community where everyone has opportunities to thrive.

MCAR Residential Program

Supporting Independence, Promoting Inclusion, and Building Community 🏡❤️

From the Nurse’s Office:

As the leaves start to turn and the weather cools, the health and safety of the individuals we serve at MCAR remain our top priority. With the change of seasons, it is time to prepare for the annual return of colds, the flu, and respiratory viruses. Building a strong shield of immunity across our entire organization takes a true team effort.

Here is how we can all work together to keep our homes healthy, vibrant, and safe this season.

The Best Defense: Save the Date for Our Annual Clinic!

Vaccination remains our most effective tool against severe respiratory illness. We are excited to host our Annual Flu and COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic on Thursday, October 8, 2026.

  • Who: All group home residents and staff members.
  • Why: Getting vaccinated not only protects you, but it also creates a circle of safety around the vulnerable individuals in our care.

Knowing the Signs: Common Symptoms to Watch For

Early identification of illness helps us provide quick comfort and prevents viruses from spreading. It is important to keep a close eye out for both physical symptoms and behavioral changes:

  • Common Cold: Usually comes on gradually. Look for a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, a mild sore throat, and a gentle cough. Fevers are rare with a standard cold.
  • The Flu: Tends to hit suddenly and hard. Watch for a high fever, body aches, chills, fatigue, a dry cough, and a headache.
  • Changes in Behavior: May see an increase in agitation, lethargy, refusal to eat, or changes in sleeping patterns can often be the first sign that they are not feeling well.

Everyday Prevention Habits

Consistent daily habits make a massive difference in preventing the spread of germs in shared living environments:

  • Master the 20-Second Wash: Encourage and assist residents with thorough handwashing using soap and warm water, especially before meals and after returning from community outings.
  • High-Touch Sanitizing: Staff can extra-actively sanitize shared surfaces like doorknobs, adaptive equipment, tabletops, and remote controls.

By staying proactive, recognizing symptoms early, and getting vaccinated, we can ensure a safe, cozy, and healthy autumn for everyone in our community. Thank you for your continued dedication to the health and wellness of our residents!

Exploring Boundaries

Healthy Boundaries at Work

Healthy boundaries help maintain professional, respectful, and safe relationships. They protect both staff and the individuals they support while building trust and encouraging independence.

Why Boundaries Matter

Boundaries help prevent burnout, maintain professionalism, protect privacy and dignity, and support healthy relationships. They also encourage individuals to make their own choices and become more independent.

Examples of Healthy Boundaries

Healthy boundaries include following your job responsibilities, communicating professionally, maintaining work hours, and encouraging independence. They also involve seeking guidance from a supervisor when a situation is outside your role.

Examples of Unhealthy Boundaries

Unhealthy boundaries can include sharing too much personal information, lending or borrowing money, trying to solve every problem, working outside your role without approval, or becoming overly involved in someone's personal life.

Tips for Maintaining Boundaries

Know your role, communicate clearly and respectfully, and use "I" statements when setting limits. Be consistent with expectations, practice self-care, and ask for support when needed.

Remember

Healthy boundaries are not about being uncaring. They help you provide the best support possible while protecting your well-being and maintaining professional relationships.
