Dear Colleagues,
With the Alberta government legislating its thousands of teachers back to work this week, the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers' Association is calling on its members to show support for our colleagues in Alberta who have been on strike since October 6, 2025.
Back-to-work legislation undermines the right to a fair collective bargaining process. When any government uses legislation to end a strike, they silence the voices of workers instead of addressing the issues that brought them to the table. We don’t want to see that happen here. As we enter our own round of contract negotiations in the months ahead, it’s critical that the bargaining process in Newfoundland and Labrador remains fair, respectful, and free from political interference.
We hope the newly elected Newfoundland and Labrador provincial government is carefully watching the situation unfolding in Alberta, and does not make the same mistake as it prepares to bargain with its public sector unions in this province. By showing our support for our colleagues in Alberta, we are also delivering an important message to the Wakeham government that NL teachers are the backbone of our society and deserve a bargaining process that recognizes the importance of education to the economic and social future of this province.
