Give yourself a special new year's treat and try some of the Bay Area's finest cuisine during Oakland Restaurant Week, Jan. 20-29.Visit Oakland, the city's Convention and Visitors Bureau, will host the 2nd annual event, held in correlation with Visit California's Restaurant Month. Several of Oakland's top restaurants will feature special prix fixe, multi-course menus at set prices of $20, $30 and $40. Participating restaurants are located throughout Oakland. Junior CEOs program underway

 

The Junior CEO program developed by the Chamber and the Oakland Unified School District has begun, supporting and encouraging Oakland youth with entrepreneurial skills to develop business enterprises and participate in complementary civic processes. Bank of America Student Leaders

 

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation's Student Leaders Program is now accepting applications for 2012. The program has recognized more than 1,600 exemplary high school juniors and seniors with a passion for improving their communities. It develops local youth through two components - a summer 2012 eight-week paid summer internship with a nonprofit organization and a week-long, all-expense paid Student Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. from July 15-20. New York Times honors our city

 

In its Friday, Jan. 6 issue, the New York Times listed Oakland as fifth of the top 45 places to visit in 2012. CHAMBER SELLING MANDATORY 2012 FEDERAL AND STATE EMPLOYMENT POSTERS

The Oakland Metropolitan Chamber is now selling 2012 California and Federal Employment Posters. If you get one thing to protect your company in 2012 from liability and government fines, it should be the labor law poster (regular or laminated), which is required for all businesses. Whether you have one employee or 1,000 employees, you're required to post 16 state and federal notices as well as the new National Labor Relations Board requirements. You can avoid fines in the thousands of dollars by purchasing a poster from the Chamber.

 SMALL BUSINESS TAX WORKSHOP

Chamber members will receive a 15 percent discount (original cost $35) for this workshop through Hilliard Management Group, where small business owners will learn how to avoid excessive tax penalties and reduce taxes. The workshop will be held at the Chamber on Thursday, Jan. 26. From 9 a.m. to noon, the workshop will cover state and federal income taxes, state and federal payroll taxes, sales and use taxes, property taxes, city taxes, and more. Then from 1 to 5 p.m. there will be an Introduction to QuickBooks Workshop (original cost $79), a hands-on workshop with laptops and sample data provided, introducing the useful and flexible QuickBooks accounting and bookkeeping application.  NICOLE TAYLOR TO SPEAK AT WOMEN IN BUSINESS LUNCHEON

Nicole Taylor, the president and chief executive officer of the East Bay Community Foundation, will be the guest speaker at the first East Bay Women in Business luncheon of 2012 on Friday, Feb. 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Waterfront Hotel in Jack London Square. She will speak on "How Economically Empowered Women Make the East Bay a Better Place." The East Bay Community Foundation is a leading resource for mobilizing financial resources and community leadership to transform the lives of people through support for young children to succeed and enhancing economic opportunities for adults and families. Cost: $35 for Chamber members, $45 for non-members.

PROCUREMENT FAIR SET FOR MARCH 2

The Chamber's Oakland and East Bay Business and Procurement Fair will be held on Friday, March 2 from 2-5 p.m. at the Oakland Marriott City Center. This annual event brings together vendors, business organizations, public agencies and members of the local community to facilitate business-to-business partnerships and create new customer leads. Showcase your business with a display table - $199 for Chamber members ($159 for returning participants) and $299 for non-members ($239 for returnees). Public agencies can request a table at no charge. Individual attendance is free.

Berkeley National Lab - As part of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory community relations program to support science education in K-12 public schools and invest in local communities, the Lab has donated $10,000 to the Berkeley Public Education Foundation. The donation is dedicated to program and grants that support math and science education in Berkeley public schools.
